First determine whether your mini PC already has a discrete GPU or whether you need an external GPU (eGPU) enclosure. If you are adding an eGPU, confirm that your exact mini PC supports external graphics over the enclosure’s required connection: a USB-C-shaped port by itself does not establish eGPU compatibility.
Choose between an internal GPU and an eGPU
A discrete GPU may be installed inside the mini PC, or it may sit in a separate enclosure connected to the computer. These are different configurations, and an eGPU is not automatically an upgrade option for every mini PC.

For examples of internal-GPU systems, ASUS documentation describes discrete Intel Arc graphics in the NUC 12 Enthusiast and configurations with NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU or RTX 5060 Laptop GPU in its NUC 15 Performance guide. Check compatibility before buying or connecting an eGPU
Verify the mini PC supports external graphics
Look up the documentation for the exact mini PC model and confirm that its chosen port supports eGPU operation. The enclosure maker’s requirements must also match. USB-C describes a connector shape; it does not, on its own, prove that the port can carry an external GPU.

Match the enclosure, cable, card, and power
Check the enclosure’s supported graphics-card dimensions, power connections, and power-supply requirements against the exact graphics card. Interface and cable requirements vary by enclosure. For example, Razer’s Core X Chroma guide specifies a host with Thunderbolt 3 external-graphics support and an active 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3 cable. The Core X V2 guide describes supported USB4, Thunderbolt 4, or Thunderbolt 5 systems that also support eGPU operation, and uses the provided Thunderbolt 5 cable in its setup guide. These are model-specific requirements, not universal rules for eGPU enclosures.

Set up an external GPU enclosure
- Read both manuals. Confirm the host’s eGPU support, the enclosure’s host-interface requirements, card clearance, power connections, and any power-supply requirements.
- Install the card with the enclosure powered off and unplugged. Follow the enclosure’s assembly instructions, including its instructions for connecting power components. Razer explicitly instructs users to switch off and unplug the cited Core X Chroma and Core X V2 enclosures before installing components.
- Connect the enclosure using the specified cable. Use the cable and supported host port required by your particular enclosure. Do not assume a generic USB-C cable or port will work.
- Connect the monitor to the graphics card if you want the eGPU to drive that display. Use an output on the installed GPU, as shown in Razer’s setup instructions for the cited enclosures.
- Update and authorize the connection as needed. Apply relevant operating-system updates and host firmware guidance for your device. If the computer prompts you to authorize the enclosure, follow the prompt.
- Install the graphics driver for the installed card. Razer’s Core X Chroma instructions say to confirm the external GPU is detected before installing its driver. Get the appropriate driver from the GPU manufacturer and follow the enclosure and card makers’ guidance.
Make sure a game uses the intended GPU
When the monitor is connected directly to the graphics card in the eGPU enclosure, that is the display path described in the Razer setup guides. Windows also provides a Graphics Settings page on devices that support advanced graphics options; Microsoft documents its Settings URI as ms-settings:display-advancedgraphics. Availability can depend on the device. Consult the current Windows build and your device maker’s guidance for assigning a particular game to a GPU; the cited Microsoft documentation does not establish a universal current click-by-click procedure: Microsoft Learn: Launch the Settings app.
What to expect from the choice
An internal discrete-GPU mini PC avoids a separate enclosure connection, while an eGPU requires confirmed host support and compatible enclosure, cable, card, and power. The documentation cited here explains setup and compatibility examples; it does not establish a general gaming-performance or frame-rate comparison between the two approaches. Compare the exact system and enclosure documentation rather than assuming one configuration will be faster.
