To configure a controller in RPCS3, connect it to your computer, open the Pads or Gamepad Configuration screen, choose a player slot and the handler that matches how your operating system presents the controller, then select the device, test its inputs, and save. For Xbox and compatible pads, choose XInput when available; for a DualShock 4, use RPCS3’s dedicated DualShock 4 handler. Menu wording and available handlers can vary by RPCS3 build and operating system.
Configure a controller in RPCS3
- Connect the controller to your computer. Pair it over Bluetooth or connect it by USB, and confirm that the operating system recognizes it.
- Open RPCS3’s Pads or Gamepad Configuration screen. The exact label may vary by version.
- Choose the player slot you want to configure.
- Choose a handler that matches the controller interface RPCS3 can see. For Xbox and XInput-compatible controllers, select XInput if it is offered. For a DualShock 4, select RPCS3’s dedicated DualShock 4 handler when available.
- Select the detected device. Press buttons and move the sticks to check that RPCS3 registers the correct inputs. Adjust mappings if needed.
- Save the configuration and test the controller in a game. If it does not respond, first recheck the selected handler and device.
The handler alone does not guarantee that RPCS3 has selected the right controller or mappings. For current platform-specific instructions, consult the RPCS3 controller configuration guide.
Set up an Xbox or XInput-compatible controller
Choose the XInput handler and the detected Xbox or XInput-compatible device, then check its mapping and save. RPCS3’s configuration guide describes these controllers as widely supported for PC use, and the project includes a dedicated XInput handler.
There are two important limitations: standard Xbox/XInput controllers do not provide PS3 motion controls or pressure-sensitive buttons, and their printed button labels differ from the PlayStation symbols shown in many games. If a game needs motion or pressure input, check its requirements rather than assuming an Xbox pad can supply those features.

Set up a DualShock 4
Windows
The RPCS3 Wiki says Windows users can connect a DualShock 4 over USB or Bluetooth and use RPCS3’s dedicated handler through HIDAPI without additional setup steps. Third-party controller tools such as DS4Windows or ScpToolkit may interfere with native detection. If RPCS3 does not see the controller, temporarily disable those tools while troubleshooting.
Linux
Linux may require udev rules so RPCS3 can access the controller. Follow the current instructions in the RPCS3 controller configuration guide for your controller and distribution. The process involves controller identifiers and system permissions, so do not substitute a shortened rule from an old third-party tutorial.

Choose between DualShock, Xbox, and DualShock 3

The DualShock 3 guide discusses dedicated-handler methods on Windows using DsHidMini or Sony’s driver, as well as an older XInput route using ScpToolkit. Do not judge an unverified DS3 listing by appearance alone.

- It appears connected but does nothing: Confirm the handler and device selected in RPCS3, test the inputs, correct mappings if needed, and save.
- A DualShock 4 is not detected on Windows: Select the dedicated DualShock 4 handler and temporarily disable DS4Windows or ScpToolkit if installed.
- A DualShock 4 is inaccessible on Linux: Follow the current udev instructions for your controller and distribution, reload the rules or restart as directed, then reconnect the controller.
- A game requires motion or pressure-sensitive input: A standard Xbox/XInput pad does not provide those features. The RPCS3 guide points to its GamePad Test homebrew for visualizing motion and pressure-sensitive data.
- Your menu labels differ from a tutorial: RPCS3 changes over time. Use the options shown in your installed build and check the live configuration guide for current platform-specific steps.
The RPCS3 Wiki calls Xbox and third-party XInput-compatible controllers a widely supported choice that does not require additional software or third-party tools. That general convenience does not remove the feature limits above.
