For original Xbox emulation on PC, connect your controller, confirm Windows, macOS, or Linux recognizes it, then select it in xemu’s controller settings. If the controller is missing, the usual cause is that SDL—the input layer xemu uses—recognizes it as a joystick but does not have a gamepad mapping for its buttons, sticks, and triggers.
Configure a controller in xemu
These steps are for xemu, an original Xbox emulator. Other emulator frontends use different settings; see the RetroArch and XQEMU sections below if you use one of those instead.
- Connect or pair the controller with your PC. Check that your operating system recognizes it before opening xemu.
- Open xemu’s input or controller configuration, then choose the connected gamepad for the player you want to use. xemu uses SDL3 for controller input and supports up to four gamepads.
- Launch a game and test the face buttons, D-pad, both sticks, stick clicks, and analog triggers. If some controls are wrong or inactive, check the controller’s mapping rather than assuming the hardware is defective.
SDL mappings associate a controller’s physical buttons and axes with standard gamepad controls. A controller can therefore work in the operating system but still lack the mapping xemu needs.
Controller compatibility notes
The xemu controller guide says Xbox One and Xbox 360 controllers should work out of the box on Windows and Linux. Its macOS guidance calls for an additional driver. The same guide says DualShock 4 controllers work out of the box on all platforms without extra driver installation or configuration.

For an original Xbox controller, xemu says you need a USB adapter to connect it to a PC. Its documented driver notes list Xb2XInput for Windows, 360Controller for macOS, and say Linux is usually supported out of the box through xpad. These are project-documented notes; check the current driver project’s instructions for your operating system before installing a driver.
Fix a controller that does not appear in xemu
xemu’s troubleshooting guide explains the key distinction: “Only devices that SDL recognizes as gamepads (devices with an established mapping of buttons, sticks, and triggers) appear in xemu’s controller selection menu.” Check these issues in order.

- Confirm the operating system sees the controller. If it does not, troubleshoot the cable, wireless pairing, or platform driver first. The xemu FAQ recommends starting with host detection.
- Check xemu’s log for an unmapped joystick. SDL can recognize a connected device as a generic joystick without recognizing it as a standardized gamepad. An unmapped-joystick message points to a missing gamepad mapping, not necessarily a connection failure. See xemu’s troubleshooting guide.
- Add an SDL mapping if needed. The controller guide recommends using the community SDL_GameControllerDB. Download its
gamecontrollerdb.txtfile and set the path in the[input]section ofxemu.toml:

If your controller is not listed, follow the database project’s instructions to generate a suitable mapping string. xemu loads the external mapping file on startup; loaded mappings are reported in its console or xemu.log.
- Check whether another application is intercepting input. The xemu FAQ notes that an application such as Steam Input may have exclusive access to a controller. Close or adjust that application, then check xemu’s controller selector again.
- Retest the full mapping. Confirm both sticks and triggers work as well as the buttons. A mapping can be incomplete even when the controller appears in xemu.
Use an original Xbox controller with a USB adapter
If you want to use original Xbox hardware, choose a USB adapter that connects that controller to a PC and follow its current driver and setup instructions. xemu’s controller documentation names Xb2XInput for Windows, 360Controller for macOS, and xpad support on Linux. Adapter availability and prices can change, so check a current product listing before buying. Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners on Windows or Linux generally do not need this legacy-controller adapter, according to xemu’s compatibility guidance.

Use the keyboard as a fallback
xemu includes keyboard input for basic controls. Its documented defaults include A, B, X, and Y for the corresponding buttons; Backspace for Back; Return for Start; number keys 1–5 for White, Black, the left stick, the right stick, and xemu navigation; and the arrow keys for the D-pad. Letter-key clusters handle stick directions and triggers. Consult the full xemu keyboard layout for the exact assignments rather than treating this partial list as a complete map.
If you use RetroArch
RetroArch has its own controller autoconfiguration system. Do not use xemu’s SDL3 database setting in RetroArch. The RetroArch autoconfiguration guide says profiles match controllers using their name, vendor ID, and product ID. Depending on your platform, common profiles may be bundled; you can also try Main Menu → Online Updater → Update Autoconfig Profiles.

If RetroArch has no suitable profile for your controller, use this documented flow:
- Go to Settings → Input → User 1 Binds → User 1 Bind All and follow the prompts to map the controls.
- Test the buttons, sticks, and triggers.
- Select User 1 Save Autoconfig to save a profile.
- If manual bindings interfere with testing, use User 1 Bind Default All to reset them before testing the saved profile; RetroArch’s guide warns that manual bindings take precedence.
If you use XQEMU
XQEMU documents separate command-line input paths, so its options are not xemu instructions. Its input guide describes SDL2-supported input to emulate an Xbox controller, keyboard input, and advanced USB passthrough.

- For SDL2 gamepad input, the documented example is
-device usb-xbox-gamepad-sdl,index=0. XQEMU says this is known to work well with Xbox 360 and DualShock 4 controllers with little to no setup, apart from any required platform drivers. - For keyboard input, the documented option is
-device usb-xbox-gamepad.
Connect multiple controllers
xemu supports up to four gamepads, which can be connected as they would be to a physical Xbox. The number of players available in a particular game can be lower; emulator capacity does not guarantee that every game supports four-player play.
