To make music contradict a scene, decide what the image seems to communicate, then give the music a different but purposeful point of view. A celebratory cue can carry private dread; an ominous drone can persist beneath good news; a heroic march can make an awkward action feel absurd. The contrast should be legible and connected to the drama—not just dissonance added at random.

Start with the scene’s two meanings

Describe what is visibly happening before deciding what it means: note the gestures, camera movement, pace, dialogue, effects, and any existing music. Then write two short statements:

  • The scene seems to say: what a viewer might infer from the surface action.
  • The music will suggest: a different feeling, knowledge, or perspective.

The second statement might belong to a character’s private state, a danger the audience senses but the character does not, a social ritual, or a director’s ironic distance. Film-music scholarship calls a mismatch between the emotional tone of music and on-screen action crossmodal dramaturgical counterpoint. In practical terms, the music and image are telling different emotional stories at once.

Be specific about the relationship. “Happy music over sad images” is a starting point, not yet a dramatic intention. “The public celebration sounds polished, but the music hints that the victory is morally compromised” gives you something to compose toward.

Choose what carries the contradiction

Harmony is only one way to create a mismatch. Choose the musical element that best communicates the second reading; changing one or two prominent elements is often clearer than changing everything at once.

Musical element How it can create contrast
Melody and harmony A bright tune can sound suspect when a recurring interval or unstable harmony shadows it.
Rhythm and pulse A regular, confident beat can make disorder feel absurd; a displaced pulse can unsettle an otherwise calm scene.
Timbre and register Thin, high sounds can make a polished image feel fragile; low or processed sounds can imply weight or threat beneath an upbeat surface.
Texture and dynamics Sparse music can create emotional distance from a crowded celebration; a sudden swell can turn a small gesture into a disturbing event.
Source and placement Music heard as part of the scene can suggest a character’s world, while a more detached score can offer an outside perspective. Silence can also refuse the emotion the image appears to invite.

These are options, not fixed meanings: the same sound can read differently depending on the scene and the rest of the score. Keep a thread of coherence—a motif, instrument, pulse, or shared sound-world—so a change in emotional register still belongs to the cue.

Build and test the cue in context

  1. Mark the scene’s turning points. Note when a character reacts, the viewer learns something new, or the surface action stops being the main story. Let the cue’s meaning develop with those changes rather than treating the whole scene as one mood. Hildur Guðnadóttir has described tempo-mapping characters and scenes before recording for TÁR; Marcelo Zarvos has described a unified score for Dark Waters that moves through thriller tension, the rhythms of a legal challenge, and the human cost.
  2. Give the cue a musical identity. Establish a motif, pulse, or sound-world, then introduce the contradiction through the element you chose. A stable idea can carry conflicting meanings as the arrangement or context changes.
  3. Write a counter-reading. If your first sketch simply mirrors the visible action, try one that serves another point of view. Zarvos recalls that director Todd Haynes requested a big heroic cue for a man running from a scorned lover. Zarvos initially found the direction confusing, then understood its dramatic intention as the cue came together.
  4. A/B one musical choice at a time. Keep the scene fixed and compare, for example, consonant with dissonant harmony, regular with displaced pulse, acoustic with processed timbre, or full with sparse texture. This makes it easier to hear what the device contributes instead of confusing contradiction with sheer intensity.
  5. Check the actual edit and mix. Listen with dialogue, effects, and source music. Ask whether the intended second reading survives, whether the cue becomes too literal, and whether it competes with important sound. Edits can change during development: the BFI’s interview with Mica Levi about The Zone of Interest describes an edit that remained in flux.

Learn from scores that make the mismatch work

The Parallax View: make an anthem feel suspect

The Criterion Collection describes Michael Small’s recurring two-note Fender Rhodes motif descending by a minor ninth. In an official-looking report scene, the “skewered anthem” can move the listener while the ominous motif makes the feeling questionable. In the closing credits, a more straightforward marching-band reprise shifts the irony. The craft lesson is that one musical idea can carry competing meanings; its treatment and context can change which meaning comes forward.

Andor: keep unease beneath good news

StarWars.com describes Nicholas Britell’s use of long string drones, low-volume beats, and dissonant tones that return the viewer to tension even when something good happens. This is a useful approach when the local event is positive but the larger world remains dangerous: the music can acknowledge the moment without pretending its wider context has changed.

Coraline: let the music develop beyond the plot

Composer Bruno Coulais said it was not interesting to “say the same thing with the music as the story.” He describes Coraline’s music beginning quietly and realistically before becoming frightening, using strange timbres, microtonal strings, glissandi, and contrapuntal voices. The score can follow an atmospheric or psychological trajectory rather than underline each plot event.

Dark Waters: score a person, not just the danger

Zarvos also describes a scene in which he focused not simply on apparent danger but on the protagonist’s inner state and identity as a family man. He recalls Haynes’s guidance as: “Whenever the music gets too tense, let’s not forget the human element.” This is Zarvos’s recollection of Haynes’s words. A cue’s point of view can therefore differ from the image by centering a person whom the visible action might otherwise reduce to a source of suspense.

TÁR and The Zone of Interest: use process and sound-world

Guðnadóttir has discussed building music around rehearsal, practice, and failed attempts rather than simply writing the fictional masterpiece at the center of TÁR. In the BFI interview, Mica Levi discusses experimental sound directions and abstract electronic sounds for The Zone of Interest. These approaches show how materials and production choices can comment on a scene without straightforwardly matching its surface emotion; they also make listening against the evolving edit and sound design especially important.

Diagnose a contradiction that is not working

  • The cue sounds random: clarify the music’s point of view and give the contrast a recognizable musical thread.
  • The mismatch is too obvious: reduce the number of elements carrying it, or make the contrast emerge over time instead of arriving at full strength immediately.
  • The music only makes the scene louder: try a different emotional reading rather than increasing volume, density, or dissonance.
  • The intended meaning disappears in the mix: reassess placement and texture around dialogue and effects, then test again against the current cut.
  • The cue contradicts the scene but not in a useful way: ask whose inner state or knowledge the music represents, and whether that perspective adds irony, unease, distance, absurdity, or ambiguity.
