To complete The Ghost in the Portrait, find and water five Zero motifs in Oogie Boogie’s Mirror Lair, craft Real Ghostly Paint Thinner from the five Zero Essence, use it to upgrade your Watering Can, then water the painting trapping Zero. Other documented tasks include placing Scrooge’s Plain Gift Box and smashing the Lucky Wheel for five cogs; their exact order within the quest is not established.
Unlock the quest and enter the Mirror Lair
The Ghost in the Portrait is the third weekly quest in Disney Dreamlight Valley’s six-week Oogie Boogie Season of Scares event. It requires completing The Oogie Boogie Contract first. The event announcement lists the quest’s scheduled release as October 7, 2026.
To begin Oogie Boogie’s questline, the official event announcement says to unlock the Peaceful Meadow, Scrooge McDuck’s Store, and Chez Remy, then check your Mail and go to Scrooge’s Store. Once The Ghost in the Portrait is available and its prerequisite is complete, enter the Mirror Lair through the store.
The event’s schedule lists weekly quests for September 23, September 30, October 7, October 14, October 21, and October 28, 2026. These are scheduled dates; the official announcement says to start the first Oogie Boogie quest before November 4, 2026. If you begin the chain before that cutoff, you can finish the remaining quests later at your own pace. Oogie Boogie leaves the Valley after November 4 if you have not started the chain. Find and water all five Zero motifs
Look for the Zero motifs around the Mirror Lair and water each one. The item reference identifies these five locations:
- On the right-hand window display.
- Behind the right side of the staircase.
- On the table in the right-side furniture display.
- Behind the skeleton display beside the vault door.
- On the stacked dice across from the skeleton display.
Watering the five motifs gives you five Zero Essence. If you are missing one, check each of these positions carefully, including behind the staircase and the skeleton display. See the Zero Essence item reference.

Craft the paint thinner and free Zero
- At a crafting station, combine the five Zero Essence to make one Real Ghostly Paint Thinner.
- Use the paint thinner from your inventory to upgrade the Watering Can.
- Use the upgraded Watering Can on the painting trapping Zero.

Complete the other documented Mirror Lair tasks
Two additional quest items are documented, but the quest entry does not establish their exact order relative to the Zero Essence steps:
