Start with the console or PC you actually use: Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus, and Nintendo Switch Online serve different ecosystems, so they are not interchangeable. Then compare the benefits you will use, the membership term you expect to keep, and the renewal price—not just the game count or an introductory offer. The U.S. prices and plan details below are from official pages accessed October 7, 2026; prices and catalogs can change, and availability varies by country.

Compare the plans at a glance

This table compares the benefits and U.S. prices established on the official pages. Xbox’s current comparison page does not establish complete prices and features for every tier, so missing Xbox prices are marked “not stated” rather than estimated.

Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Players who use Xbox and other supported devices and value day-one releases 500+ games across console, PC, and supported devices; day-one releases $22.99 per month
Xbox Game Pass Premium Players seeking a multi-device catalog without the same day-one release access as Ultimate 200+ games across console, PC, and supported devices; Xbox-published titles added within 12 months, rather than on day one Introductory 14 days for $1, then $14.99 per month
Xbox Game Pass Essential Players comparing the entry-level Xbox tier Exact current benefits not stated in the returned official comparison page Not stated in the returned official comparison page
PC Game Pass Players who use a PC Exact current benefits not stated in the returned official comparison page Not stated in the returned official comparison page

PlayStation Plus Premium PlayStation players who want additional classics, trials, and streaming benefits Extra benefits plus the Classics Catalog, game trials, cloud streaming, and the Sony Pictures Catalog $19.99 monthly; $54.99 for three months; $159.99 for 12 months

Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, individual One Nintendo account holder who wants additional classic-game libraries and selected DLC Includes standard benefits and libraries including Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, and SEGA Genesis, plus selected included DLC $49.99 for 12 months
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, family Households seeking Expansion Pack benefits across multiple Nintendo accounts Expansion Pack benefits; family membership terms apply $79.99 for 12 months

Xbox catalog counts and tier details are publisher claims, not independent measurements. The Xbox page lists Ultimate at $22.99 per month and Premium at an introductory 14 days for $1 followed by $14.99 monthly; promotional subscriptions continue at the then-current regular price unless canceled, plus applicable taxes. See the Xbox Game Pass plan comparison.

PlayStation prices are listed for the U.S. on the official PlayStation Plus plan page. Nintendo prices are listed in the U.S. price table; Nintendo notes that membership pricing depends on country and duration. See Nintendo’s membership price table.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch Online 12-Month Individual Membership [Digital Code]
  • Enjoy a curated library of 70+ classic Super NES and NES games. You can compete (or cooperate) online with friends, share your screen, or virtually pass the controller, depending on the game.
  • Access a collection of Game Boy games to play anytime, anywhere!
  • In addition to the game data regularly saved to your system, you’ll have online backup. This makes it easy to retrieve your game data if you lose your system or start using a new one.
  • Enhance your online experience with the Nintendo Switch Online app. For example, you can use voice chat with players in compatible games.

Choose based on the hardware you own

First identify where you play. Game Pass is an Xbox service, PlayStation Plus is for the PlayStation ecosystem, and Nintendo Switch Online is for supported Nintendo Switch devices, including Switch 2. A large or attractive catalog is not useful if it is not available on the hardware you use. Check the relevant official plan page for supported devices and current terms: Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo membership purchasing guidance.

Separate multiplayer access from game catalogs

If online multiplayer is your main need

Compare the entry-level membership for your console and the price for the same period. PlayStation Essential includes online multiplayer along with monthly games, discounts and content, cloud storage, and Share Play. Nintendo’s standard membership includes online play, classic games, and member offers. The Xbox comparison page names Essential as a current tier, but the available page material does not establish its complete benefits or price; check the live Xbox page before comparing it with other entry-level plans.

If you want a rotating catalog

Compare the specific tier that provides the library you want, not a service’s base plan. PlayStation Extra and Premium include the Game Catalog, described by Sony as hundreds of games with new titles added regularly. Xbox highlights 500+ games for Ultimate and 200+ for Premium across console, PC, and supported devices. Nintendo’s Expansion Pack instead emphasizes classic-game libraries and selected DLC; these libraries are not equivalent to the broader catalogs described by Xbox and PlayStation.

Rank #2
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack 12-month Individual Membership – [Digital Code]
  • Library of classic Nintendo 64 games
  • Collection of classic and colorful Game Boy Advance games
  • All Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass* content as released
  • Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Happy Home Paradise DLC *
  • Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion*

Catalog membership does not guarantee that a particular title will remain available. PlayStation says games change over time, and Nintendo and Xbox benefits are tied to their current plan offerings. Check the official catalog or storefront for a named game before subscribing.

Compare game timing and the kind of games included

Release timing can matter more than the headline catalog size. Xbox says Ultimate includes day-one releases; Premium does not provide those releases on the same day, and Xbox-published titles are added within 12 months. PlayStation Extra and Premium offer a changing catalog, while Nintendo Expansion Pack is centered on classic titles and selected downloadable content rather than a promise of day-one access.

Nintendo lists Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass among selected included DLC benefits. Confirm eligibility and device details for a specific benefit on Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online overview.

Match the billing period and account for renewal

Compare the total price for the period you realistically expect to keep the membership. A monthly fee, a 12-month price, and a temporary introductory deal are different commitments; do not treat them as equivalent. The PlayStation prices in the table show the available monthly, three-month, and annual terms, while the Nintendo figures include monthly and three-month individual standard plans and annual standard and Expansion Pack options.

Xbox says promotional subscriptions renew at the then-current regular price unless canceled, plus applicable taxes. Nintendo states that membership auto-renews after the initial term at the then-current price unless canceled. PlayStation says subscriptions continue until canceled and refers customers to its terms for price changes. Check renewal settings and live terms before purchase: Xbox, Nintendo, and PlayStation.

  • Nintendo eShop Digital Cards are redeemable only through the Nintendo eShop on the Nintendo Switch, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS family of systems.

Consider household use without assuming plans share the same rules

Nintendo lists family memberships for up to eight Nintendo accounts. The U.S. annual prices are $34.99 for standard family membership and $79.99 for Expansion Pack family membership. Do not assume that a family plan’s account rules or sharing benefits transfer to Xbox or PlayStation; check each service’s own terms for the accounts and devices in your household.

Use a practical decision sequence

  1. Pick your ecosystem. Decide whether you need Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo membership based on the hardware you already use.
  2. Name the benefit you will use. Separate online multiplayer from a game catalog, retro games, cloud play, day-one releases, or selected DLC.
  3. Choose the tier that contains that benefit. For example, PlayStation’s catalog begins with Extra, while Nintendo’s additional classic libraries and named DLC are part of Expansion Pack.
  4. Compare matching terms. Use monthly against monthly or annual against annual, and calculate the total for the period you expect to remain subscribed.
  5. Check renewal and household terms. Include the post-promotion price, automatic renewal, taxes where applicable, and the number of accounts that need access.
  6. Verify current availability. Confirm the price for your country and whether the games or benefits you want are still included.

Check the current offer before subscribing

All prices here are the U.S. prices displayed on official pages accessed October 7, 2026. They can change, and Nintendo explicitly says prices depend on country and duration. Xbox’s available comparison-page information does not establish a complete current price-and-feature table for every tier, so verify Essential and PC Game Pass directly rather than inferring their prices or benefits from another tier. The listed catalog sizes and benefit descriptions are publisher statements, and game availability can rotate.
