Compare a VPS against the stream you actually plan to send—not a generic “recommended server size.” Start with resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and whether the VPS must encode or merely pass through compatible video. Then verify sustained outbound capacity and traffic limits, test the real workflow, and check both server metrics and YouTube’s stream health. YouTube publishes encoder settings, but it does not certify VPS providers or prescribe one universal CPU, RAM, or bandwidth plan for continuous streaming.
Define the stream workload before comparing VPS plans
Write down the exact settings and tasks the server must handle. A VPS sending a compatible, already-encoded file in copy mode has a different compute workload from one encoding or transcoding video in software.
- Resolution and frame rate: for example, 1080p30 or 1080p60.
- Codec and target bitrate: choose the intended video codec and bitrate before evaluating capacity.
- Processing: identify whether the workflow copies compatible media or encodes/transcodes it.
- Audio: include the audio format and bitrate in the stream workload.
- Recording: note whether the VPS must also save a local recording; if so, include storage capacity and disk activity in the test.
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, CBR, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Its bitrate figures are encoder recommendations, not evidence that any VPS will sustain a healthy connection. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance as the test target
For H.264, YouTube currently recommends these ranges:

| Output | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3–8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5–14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6–17 Mbps |
YouTube provides different recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so do not apply the H.264 ranges to those codecs. The cited YouTube page does not show a publication year; treat these as the settings currently documented there, not as a dated benchmark or a VPS guarantee.
Compare the VPS on the factors that affect continuous streaming
Read the plan terms, then validate the claims with a representative test. A provider’s advertised port speed or a vCPU count alone does not establish sustained performance for your particular stream.

| Factor | What to compare or test | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding workload | Copy/pass-through versus software or hardware encoding/transcoding; test the intended codec, resolution, and frame rate. | Compute demand depends on the actual processing path. YouTube’s guidance does not define a universal VPS size. |
| CPU allocation | Published vCPU allocation and observed CPU behavior during the representative encode. | A plan label does not show how the server behaves under your sustained workload. |
| Outbound network | Sustained egress terms, traffic allowance, network restrictions, and observed stability from the VPS region you intend to use. | The VPS continuously sends the configured stream to YouTube. Headline port speed is not, by itself, a sustained-throughput guarantee. |
| Traffic charges | Included transfer, excess-traffic rates or limits, and any applicable fair-use or network policies for the current plan. | Continuous output accumulates egress throughout the billing period; check the provider’s current terms directly. |
| Recovery and operations | Process supervision, restart behavior, alerting, and provider reliability terms. | A provider outage and an encoder-process failure are different problems; a process can fail even when the host is available. |
| Monitoring | CPU, memory, process errors, network behavior, disk if recording, and YouTube stream health. | Server metrics show host-side behavior, while YouTube’s health feedback shows what the platform is receiving. |
Do not infer a universal CPU or RAM requirement
Resolution alone cannot determine a reliable vCPU or memory requirement. The answer depends on whether you encode, the codec and frame rate, the input format, and what else runs on the server. The cited YouTube materials specify ingest and encoder settings, not a universal CPU/RAM formula. Compare observed behavior under the exact workflow instead of treating a provider’s plan name as proof.
Estimate continuous outbound traffic
Use the configured video and audio bitrate to estimate how much data the stream sends over the plan’s billing period. As a rough decimal calculation, each 1 Mbps sustained for 30 days is about 324 GB of outbound data before protocol overhead. Multiply that estimate by the combined stream bitrate in Mbps, then verify the provider’s accounting method, included traffic, and any excess charges or restrictions. This estimate is for planning; it is not a promise about how a provider measures transfer.

For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream configured at 8 Mbps video plus 160 kbps audio is roughly 8.16 Mbps total. At a continuous rate for 30 days, that is about 2.64 TB using the rough decimal estimate. Leave practical headroom for overhead and variation, and confirm the plan terms for the specific region and billing period.
Run a like-for-like VPS test
- Fix the workload. Record the resolution, frame rate, codec, target video and audio bitrates, copy-versus-encode path, and whether local recording is enabled.
- Check traffic and egress terms. Confirm included outbound traffic, sustained network terms, restrictions, and the location of the VPS you will test. Do not treat an advertised port speed as a guarantee.
- Run the real media path. On the candidate VPS, test the exact input and encoding or copy settings intended for continuous use. Observe CPU and memory, output errors, network behavior, and dropped or late output.
- Send a test stream. Use the actual YouTube ingest configuration and an appropriate private, unlisted, or otherwise suitable test. YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health during an event.
- Review both sides. Check the VPS process and host metrics, then review YouTube’s stream-health feedback. A process that appears to be running does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Test recovery deliberately. Check how the workflow behaves after an encoder restart, a connection interruption, or a reconnect. Confirm that supervision and alerts work as intended before relying on unattended operation.
- Compare total operating cost. Include the plan, traffic charges, recording storage if needed, backups, monitoring, and the time required to maintain the stream.
Use secure ingest and verify recovery
YouTube recommends RTMPS, describing it as RTMP sent through an SSL connection. Its guidance says: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the ingest configuration provided for your own stream rather than assuming every stream uses the same address or key.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents primary and backup ingestion information as well as stream-status and health-related fields. Those configuration and health details can help structure a test; they are not a guarantee of VPS-provider uptime. See the YouTube LiveStreams API reference and Google’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

- Choosing by vCPU count alone: benchmark the intended encode or copy path and observe sustained CPU behavior.
- Trusting port speed as continuous capacity: verify plan-specific egress and traffic terms, then test stability from the intended region.
- Testing a different stream: use the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and media path; a lighter test does not establish performance for a heavier workload.
- Watching only the VPS process: check YouTube stream health as well as host metrics and encoder errors.
- Ignoring traffic accumulation: estimate continuous egress for the billing period and confirm included transfer and excess terms with the provider.
- Assuming restart equals recovery: test interruptions and reconnection behavior; confirm the process is supervised and failures can be detected.
- Comparing unverified provider rankings: there is no controlled, like-for-like provider benchmark established here. Ask for current plan terms and run your own representative test before naming a provider fastest or most reliable.
