Compare a UK digital bank against the way you actually use your current account—not just how polished its app looks. Check fees and conditions, overdraft eligibility and cost, cash and cheque access, support, useful app features, the legal provider and deposit protection. Once you have chosen an account, confirm it is open and ready, then arrange a switch through the Current Account Switch Service (CASS) with the new bank. CASS moves eligible payments and the balance, but it does not open your new account or guarantee you a replacement overdraft.

What to compare before choosing a digital bank

Start with the things that affect your own routine and costs. A feature is valuable only if you use it, and a low headline fee may depend on conditions you do not meet. MoneyHelper’s current-account comparison tool can help you compare fees, features, access and charges, but it does not include every available account.

What to compare Questions to ask
Fees and conditions What would I pay in a typical month? Are benefits or interest conditional on a monthly pay-in, Direct Debits or another requirement?
Overdraft Am I eligible, what limit might be approved, and what would my usual borrowing cost? Check the rate, any fee-free buffer and charges that apply to your likely balance.
Access to money Can I withdraw or deposit cash and handle cheques in the ways I need? Can I access or manage the account if I cannot use the app?
Digital features Do payment controls, notifications, spending tools, integrations or accessibility features solve a real need? Are any paid or conditional?
Customer service Which contact routes are available, and do their hours and response options work for me? Compare published service measures only when the dates, geography, customer groups and measures match.
Eligibility and opening Can I meet the account’s eligibility and identity-check requirements, and when will the account be ready to receive payments?
Provider and protection Which legal entity provides this specific account, and what protection applies to eligible deposits held with it?
Switching Does the new provider participate in CASS? What will transfer, what needs my attention, and what must happen if the account is joint or overdrawn?

MoneyHelper advises checking conditions attached to account benefits and warns that overdrafts can be expensive borrowing. Compare the terms for the specific account, rather than relying on a brand name or a general impression of a provider.

Check who provides the account and what protection applies

An app brand does not, by itself, establish which legal entity provides your account or what protection applies to its balance. The FCA’s Financial Lives 2024 survey uses “digital banks” as an analysis category that includes Atom, Cashplus, Monzo, Starling and Tandem. It separately defines current accounts from payment-services or e-money providers. That survey classification is not a complete, live list of providers or products.

Check the provider and protection terms for the actual account you intend to open. Monzo and Starling state that eligible deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) up to £120,000 per person. Revolut’s UK-bank announcement says eligible deposits with Revolut Bank UK Ltd receive FSCS protection up to £120,000; because the announcement describes a transition, confirm that your own account has transitioned and check its applicable terms. These are provider statements, and eligibility and the identity of the entity holding the deposit matter.

Use provider examples as prompts, not rankings

Provider pages can help identify features to investigate, but they describe the provider’s own product and are not a like-for-like independent comparison.

  • Monzo: its account information describes app-managed banking, in-app customer support, cash deposits through PayPoint or Post Office, cheque deposits through the app and switching with CASS. Check current account terms and access arrangements for your needs.
  • Starling: its official information describes app-based banking and states that eligible deposits are FSCS-protected up to £120,000. Use current provider service information and FCA-linked data when assessing service, rather than assuming every measure or feature is directly comparable.
  • Revolut: its announcement describes UK current accounts through Revolut Bank UK Ltd and FSCS protection for eligible deposits up to £120,000. Verify the provider and protection status of your own account, especially in light of the stated transition.

The FCA directory links to providers’ service-quality information and APIs. If you compare published service results, use the same measure, observation period, geography and customer group wherever possible. A single satisfaction score cannot establish which bank is best for every customer. The FCA’s July 2026 finding that one third of mystery-shop experiences for opening basic bank accounts were rated poor or very poor concerns access to basic bank accounts; it is not a measure of digital-bank customer service overall.

Understand what CASS does—and when its seven working days begin

CASS is a free switching service managed by the new bank. Once your new account is open and you and the bank have agreed a switch date, the stated switching period is seven working days. That period is for the switch itself; it does not include the time needed to apply, pass identity checks or open the account.

Under CASS, the balance and eligible payment arrangements are transferred, including Direct Debits, standing orders and incoming payments. Payments sent to the old account are redirected, and the old account is closed as part of the switch. Check participation and arrange the switch with the new bank; the new provider manages the process.

Under the CASS guarantee, if problems with the switch result in charges or interest, these are refunded. The service says the new bank decides whether to pay compensation beyond that refund.

Know what will not move automatically

Overdrafts require a new lending decision

If you are overdrawn, ask the new bank about an overdraft before setting a switch date. It will assess your application under its lending criteria and is not required to approve the same limit as your old bank. If the new facility will not cover the outstanding balance, agree how to repay the shortfall separately before switching.

Recent payment arrangements need attention

If you set up a new payment arrangement at your old bank during the seven working days before the agreed switch date, set it up at the new bank instead. Check the arrangement and its first payment date rather than assuming it will be picked up by the transfer.

Third-party app access must be authorised again

Permissions allowing budgeting apps, financial services or other third parties to access your account data do not automatically transfer with CASS. Cancel the old permission and authorise access through the new bank as appropriate. Check that the third-party service supports your chosen provider.

A practical sequence for switching

  1. List your real requirements. Note your usual transactions, any overdraft use, cash or cheque needs, preferred support channels and digital or accessibility features you rely on.
  2. Compare account terms. Check fees, conditions, overdraft costs and eligibility for the specific accounts you are considering. Use MoneyHelper’s comparison tool as a starting point, not a complete market list.
  3. Verify the provider and protection. Confirm the legal provider of the account and the terms for eligible deposits. Do not infer either from the app’s name.
  4. Open the new account first. Complete the provider’s application and identity checks, and confirm the account is ready to receive payments. Opening and switching are separate stages.
  5. Resolve any overdraft shortfall. Get the new bank’s decision on a replacement facility. Make a separate repayment plan for any balance it will not cover.
  6. Agree the CASS switch with the new bank. Confirm the switch date and check that the new provider participates in the service. The seven-working-day period starts after the account is open and the date is agreed.
  7. Review recent and linked arrangements. Set up at the new bank any payment arrangement made at the old bank within the seven working days before the switch date. Re-authorise supported third-party data access separately.

How to decide between shortlisted accounts

There is no universal winner in the available evidence: the right choice depends on your payment habits, borrowing needs, cash and cheque use, accessibility requirements and preferred support channels. Compare your finalists against the same questions in the table, and verify current fees, overdraft rates, eligibility and service information directly with the provider. If a service score informs your decision, make sure its date, geography, customer group and measure are comparable before drawing a conclusion.
