Compare a specific Treasury security with a specific dividend-paying stock or fund over the same intended holding period. First identify what each yield measures: Treasury yield to maturity reflects a security’s price and cash flows under a hold-to-maturity assumption, while dividend yield is a ratio of distributions to share price. Neither percentage alone tells you which investment will deliver the better total return or suit your risk and tax situation.
What the two yields measure
Treasury yield depends on the security
“Treasury yield” is not one universal rate. The U.S. Treasury offers marketable bills, notes, bonds, Treasury Inflation-Protected Securities (TIPS), and floating-rate notes. Bills mature within a year; notes and bonds have longer terms. TreasuryDirect explains that a note or bond’s “yield to maturity” is an annual return measure tied to its market price and cash flows. Its coupon, by contrast, is the rate paid on face value. TreasuryDirect: Understanding Pricing and Interest Rates and TreasuryDirect: Marketable Securities.
A note or bond can trade above or below face value. When its yield to maturity is above its coupon rate, its price is below par; when the yield is below the coupon, its price is above par. Bills use discount pricing, so compare the appropriate quoted measure for the specific instrument rather than treating every Treasury quote as interchangeable. The quoted yield is not a promise of the same return if you sell before maturity.
Dividend yield is a snapshot ratio
Dividend yield relates a stock’s declared or indicated dividend to its share price. It does not include share-price appreciation or decline. For a stock, check whether the figure is trailing or forward/indicated and which dividend period it uses; providers may calculate or label these figures differently. A rising yield can result from a falling share price, and the ratio alone does not establish that the dividend will continue or that the investment is attractive.

A stock represents ownership in a company. Its potential return can include dividends and capital appreciation, but its price can fall and an investor can lose money. Dividends depend on company decisions and circumstances; they are not guaranteed. SEC Investor.gov: Stocks – FAQs.
Choose comparable investments and a time horizon
Write down the exact Treasury and stock or fund before comparing percentages. Include the Treasury type, maturity, and whether the figure is an auction result or a current market yield. For the equity, identify the company or fund, the dividend period, and the share price and date used in the calculation. Use data from the same date where possible; an undated yield is not a sound basis for a current comparison.

Then match the comparison to the period you expect to invest. Treasury securities have stated maturities, while stocks and funds do not. If you sell a marketable Treasury early, its sale price may differ from the amount expected at maturity; if you sell an equity, the exit price depends on its market value then. Treasury notes mature in 2, 3, 5, 7, or 10 years and pay interest every six months. Treasury bonds are longer-term securities. TreasuryDirect: Treasury Notes and TreasuryDirect: Treasury Bonds.
For a Treasury marketable security bought through TreasuryDirect, the rate is set at auction, so a buyer does not know that rate when scheduling the purchase. Check the relevant auction result or current market yield and record its date and maturity. TreasuryDirect: Buying a Marketable Security.

Compare total return, not just income
A yield comparison answers a narrow question about a rate or distribution ratio; it does not settle which investment performs better. For a Treasury, the outcome depends on purchase price, interest payments, and whether you hold to maturity or sell. For a stock, total return includes dividends and share-price gains or losses. A fund’s distributions are also not the same as its performance: the SEC points investors to total return and standardized yield, also called SEC yield, when evaluating fund performance. SEC Investor.gov: Fund Distributions – Investor Bulletin.
Do not treat a high dividend yield as evidence that a stock is safer than a Treasury or likely to outperform it. Consider the possibility of a dividend reduction alongside the potential for a price decline. A Treasury marketable security has different payment terms, but its market price can still move before maturity.

Account for inflation and the type of Treasury
A nominal Treasury’s principal is fixed. TIPS work differently: their principal adjusts with inflation and deflation, while the coupon rate stays fixed and payments vary with the adjusted principal. At maturity, TreasuryDirect says investors receive the greater of the adjusted principal or the original principal. TIPS are issued in 5-, 10-, and 30-year terms. TreasuryDirect: TIPS.
Distinguish a nominal yield from a real yield when considering purchasing power. Do not assume a dividend-paying stock or fund is an inflation hedge: inflation can affect a company’s costs, demand, and valuation, and the outcome depends on the particular investment.

Compare after-tax income in the right context
For U.S. taxpayers, interest on Treasury marketable securities is subject to federal tax and exempt from state and local income taxes. TIPS inflation-related principal adjustments can also affect federal tax reporting before maturity. TreasuryDirect: Tax Forms and Withholding.
Ordinary dividends are generally ordinary income. Qualified dividends may be eligible for the same 0%, 15%, or 20% maximum rates that apply to net capital gain if requirements such as issuer eligibility and holding period are met. These are maximum rates described in IRS Publication 550 for 2025, not the rates every investor pays; actual treatment depends on the investor, holding period, account type, and current law. IRS Publication 550.
Tax treatment can change the cash you keep, so compare investments using your own tax circumstances and account type rather than assuming a universal after-tax winner. This is general U.S. educational information, not individualized tax advice.
A practical comparison checklist
- Name the instruments. Record the Treasury type and maturity, and the stock or fund ticker.
- Define each quote. Note whether the Treasury figure is an auction yield, market yield, or yield to maturity; for the equity, record the dividend period and whether yield is trailing or indicated.
- Synchronize the dates. Use dated Treasury and share-price/dividend data from the same comparison date.
- Match the holding period. Consider maturity or early-sale pricing for the Treasury, and the uncertain sale price for the stock or fund.
- Compare likely sources of return and loss. Include Treasury cash flows and price changes if sold early, or equity distributions and share-price movement; for funds, use total return and standardized yield rather than distributions alone.
- Check inflation and taxes. Distinguish nominal Treasuries from TIPS and account for your relevant federal and state tax treatment.
Without a named Treasury and equity investment and synchronized, dated figures, there is no reliable way to say which currently offers the higher yield. The comparison becomes meaningful only after those inputs and your intended holding period are specified.
