Choose a coating by matching the complete coating system to your actual substrate, manufacturing process, and service conditions—not by selecting a resin family in isolation. Compare adhesion, hand, flexibility, wear, exposure resistance, and application requirements using current product data, then validate the finalists on representative material.
Start with the substrate and the coating’s job
“Leather” can mean natural leather, synthetic leather, or a leather-like coated textile. A coating that works on one should not be assumed to adhere to or perform on another. Record the exact material, its existing finish, and any preparation steps before comparing candidates.
Also identify where the candidate sits in the finish: primer, base coat, sealer, topcoat, impregnation resin, or an additive blended into another binder. Those roles are not interchangeable. For example, Stahl lists acrylic resins as sealers and base coats for leather protection across upholstery, garments, shoes, leather goods, and automotive applications; that makes them candidates for appropriate finishing roles, not universal solutions for every use (Stahl leather resins).
Build a like-for-like comparison matrix
Use the same criteria for every candidate. Fill in the evidence for the exact product and formulation rather than relying on broad labels such as “polyurethane” or “silicone.”

For a defensible comparison, request each candidate’s current technical data sheet (TDS) and safety data sheet (SDS). Keep the substrate, preparation, application, cure, conditioning, and test method constant wherever possible. A result from a different material or test setup is not a fair head-to-head result.
Compare the chemistry families without assuming a winner
Acrylic resins
Acrylic systems are worth considering when the intended role is a leather-finishing sealer or base coat. Stahl’s portfolio comparison discusses abrasion, adhesion, flexing, and film resistance as selection factors and includes acrylic alongside other leather resin families (Stahl leather resin performance comparison). The information supports shortlisting relevant grades; it does not establish that acrylic is inherently best for any listed end use.

Polyurethane systems
Polyurethane is a broad family, not a single performance profile. Dow’s leather portfolio includes polyurethane, acrylic, and silicone chemistries (Dow leather coatings), while individual products illustrate how much properties depend on formulation and intended use.
For example, Siwo describes PUD-355F as an aqueous aliphatic polyurethane dispersion based on polyester and polyether for leather and textile coating. Its product page lists 35±1% solids, 1300–1400% elongation, tensile strength of 4.9 MPa, and modulus at 100% of 0.65 MPa, and claims adhesion, abrasion, hydrolysis, and water resistance (Siwo PUD-355F). These are supplier-published product figures and claims, not independent comparative results. Check the current TDS for test methods, conditions, and revision before using the figures as a specification basis.

Silicone and silicone-modified systems
Silicone may be the main elastomer or a modifier within another coating. Dow describes DOWSIL 1248 Fluid as a silicone polyether additive for polyurethane resin systems used in synthetic-leather topcoats. The company says it can impart flexibility, lubricity, and water repellency, and describes slip, mar resistance, leveling, and improved abrasion resistance (Dow DOWSIL 1248 Fluid). Treat these as product-specific claims, and check compatibility with the binder and exposure conditions.
Evonik’s September 2022 leather-coatings fact sheet describes SILIKOPUR 8081 as a silicone-modified polyurethane dispersion, citing high flexibility without tackiness, immediate hydrophobization, and fast air-drying. It also notes that hydrophobing emulsions differ in compatibility (Evonik leather coatings fact sheet). As the information is dated, confirm current product status and technical data with the supplier.

General elastomer comparisons offer context, not a shortcut to choosing a leather finish. A U.S. Department of Commerce/National Bureau of Standards handbook describes silicone elastomers as retaining flexibility across a wide temperature range but having poor resistance to hydrocarbon solvents. It describes polyurethane rubber as having high tensile and tear strength and excellent abrasion resistance, with weaker behavior at low and high temperatures (Organic Coatings: Properties, Selection, and Use). These family-level descriptions are not guaranteed properties of a particular coating formulation.

- Write down non-negotiables. Identify the exact substrate and layer role, production process, and exposures the coating must survive. Include required customer, industry, and regulatory requirements; the sources cited here do not identify which standards apply to a particular application.
- Eliminate incompatible candidates. Remove systems that do not fit the substrate, preparation, application method, cure conditions, or mandatory exposure requirements.
- Rank the remaining tradeoffs. Decide which goals matter most—such as soft hand, flex durability, abrasion, water repellency, or chemical resistance—and compare candidates on those goals using matched evidence.
- Agree on representative tests. Select methods suited to the end use, such as adhesion, flex cracking, abrasion or rub, water or stain repellency, chemical exposure, heat or cold flex, and appearance or hand after aging. Agree on substrate, preparation, coating build, cure, conditioning, and pass criteria with the supplier or customer.
- Trial the finalists on the intended material. Evaluate the complete coating system on representative samples. Record application and cure conditions alongside measured performance and any change in feel or appearance.
Read supplier claims at the right level
Portfolio pages help identify relevant chemistries and product roles; they do not by themselves prove that a formulation will work on your material. Product-page numbers and benefit statements are useful for screening only when the supporting method, substrate, and conditions match your decision. The sources cited here do not provide a same-substrate, same-method head-to-head comparison of the named resins, so they cannot support an overall ranking.

For each result you rely on, capture the supplier, product name and revision, substrate, preparation, application and coating build, cure, conditioning, test method, measured result, and whether the data is supplier-reported or independently tested. This makes differences in evidence visible instead of mistaking differences in test setup for differences in coating performance.
