Compare the business each company actually runs, not just its sector label. Track where its revenue and growth come from, what it must reinvest to produce cash, which risks could interrupt that performance, and what the current share price assumes. Semiconductor designers, equipment makers, and cloud businesses have different economics, so their headline growth rates and margins are not direct measures of which stock is better.

What business are you actually comparing?

“Semiconductor stock” can mean a chip designer, a manufacturer, or a supplier of chipmaking equipment. Those businesses have different customers, cost structures, and exposure to production cycles. “Cloud software” is not one uniform model either: a company may earn subscription revenue, usage-based cloud revenue, software-licensing revenue, advertising revenue, or hardware revenue alongside its cloud services. Start with the issuer’s segment disclosures and descriptions of how it earns revenue.

These three filings illustrate why the labels alone are not enough. Their reporting periods and business mixes differ, so the figures are examples—not a matched peer comparison or sector benchmarks.

Company and reporting period Reported figures What the example shows
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), fiscal year ended December 27, 2025 AMD FY2025 Form 10-K: net revenue was $34.6 billion, up 34% year over year; data-center revenue was $16.6 billion, up 32%; gross margin was 50%; and R&D expense was $8.1 billion. Segment growth and mix add context that the company-wide growth rate does not provide.
Microsoft, fiscal year ended June 30, 2025 Microsoft 2025 Annual Report: Microsoft Cloud revenue was $168.9 billion, up 23%; Azure and other cloud services revenue grew 34%. Additions to property and equipment increased by $20.1 billion in FY2025. A company with substantial cloud revenue can also have other revenue streams and significant infrastructure investment. Microsoft describes its offerings as spanning cloud solutions, software licensing and support, online advertising, and devices.
ASML, calendar year 2025 ASML 2025 Annual Report financials: total net sales were €32.7 billion, gross margin was 52.8%, service and field-option sales were €8.2 billion, and R&D costs were €4.7 billion. An equipment supplier can earn revenue both from systems and from services connected to its installed base.

AMD also reported approximately $440 million in net inventory and related charges associated with U.S. export controls on Instinct MI308 GPU products in FY2025. That is a company- and period-specific example of how policy exposure can affect reported results; it should not be generalized to every chip company. ASML’s FY2025 reporting included management guidance for 2026 sales of €34 billion to €39 billion and gross margin of 51% to 53%. Those figures are forward-looking company guidance, not 2026 results.

Where is growth coming from?

A growth rate tells you how much revenue changed, not why. Examine the components the company discloses and distinguish expansion in demand from changes in price or business mix.

  • Volume and adoption: Look for units sold or deployed, customer adoption, and deployment pace where reported. For a chip supplier, unit shipments can tell a different story from revenue if average selling prices change. For a cloud provider, usage growth and customer deployment can help explain consumption-based revenue.
  • Price and mix: Check whether growth reflects pricing, a shift toward higher-priced products or services, or a greater contribution from faster-growing segments. A company-wide rate may mask a decline in one business and rapid growth in another.
  • Recurring versus consumption revenue: Subscription revenue may be tied to renewals and customer retention, while usage-based revenue can move with customer consumption. Read how the company defines these streams rather than assuming all cloud revenue behaves like a fixed subscription.
  • Backlog or remaining performance obligations: Use these measures only when the issuer reports them, and understand what they do—and do not—indicate about timing and conversion into revenue.

Compare the same fiscal periods where possible. If reporting calendars do not line up, record the period beside every growth figure and avoid treating the numbers as if they cover identical market conditions.

Do margins translate into cash after reinvestment?

Gross margin is a starting point, not a verdict on business quality. It reflects what remains after the costs included in cost of revenue, while operating margin also accounts for operating expenses such as research and development. Check whether reported margins are GAAP or adjusted, and keep those definitions consistent across companies.

For semiconductor businesses

Gross margin can move with product mix, capacity utilization, manufacturing yield, and inventory. A chip designer, a manufacturer, and an equipment supplier may face different combinations of these factors. Read the issuer’s discussion of the changes rather than assuming that one margin level is normal across the category.

For cloud businesses

Cloud services require infrastructure, including datacenters and equipment. Evaluate operating margin alongside capital spending and operating cash flow so that infrastructure investment is not mistaken for cost-free growth. Microsoft’s FY2025 annual report identifies datacenter operations among significant costs, in addition to reporting the change in additions to property and equipment shown above.

Follow cash and returns over time

Compare research and development, capital expenditure, inventory, operating cash flow, and free cash flow across several reporting periods. Free cash flow is commonly calculated as operating cash flow less capital expenditure, but verify the company’s definition if it presents a non-GAAP version. Consider returns on invested capital as another way to assess whether reinvestment is generating returns; use a consistent calculation and state its inputs. A single year can be distorted by spending cycles, working-capital changes, or unusual charges.

Which company-specific risks could change the comparison?

Read each issuer’s latest risk factors and management discussion; do not assume a risk applies simply because a company belongs to a particular sector. Look for disclosures that affect the company’s own products, customers, suppliers, markets, and investment plans.

  • Demand, inventory, and orders: Assess inventory levels and changes, order volatility, and the possibility that customers delay or reduce purchases.
  • Production and suppliers: Check for manufacturing or supplier concentration and dependence on particular production capacity or components.
  • Customers and markets: Note customer concentration, end-market exposure, geographic exposure, and competitive threats.
  • Regulation and export controls: Identify restrictions that could affect which products can be sold, where they can be sold, or the cost of serving a market.
  • Infrastructure and capacity: For cloud operators, consider whether new capacity can be built and used economically, and whether the timing of expansion could pressure cash generation.

Separate risks the company identifies from your own assumptions about their likelihood or impact. A disclosed risk is not a prediction that it will occur, but it can help you identify which operating results to monitor.

What does the stock price already assume?

A strong business is not automatically an attractive stock at every price. Valuation connects the price investors pay with the earnings, sales, or cash flow they expect the company to produce. The company examples above do not include synchronized share prices or current peer valuation multiples, so they cannot establish which stock is cheaper or more attractive today.

  • Price-to-earnings (P/E): Compare price with earnings per share when earnings are positive and reasonably representative. Specify whether earnings are trailing GAAP, adjusted, or forecast; those versions are not interchangeable.
  • Enterprise value to sales or cash flow: These measures can help when capital structure differs or earnings are temporarily depressed, but they still need context about margins, reinvestment, and the quality of sales or cash flow.
  • Free-cash-flow yield: Relate free cash flow to market capitalization or enterprise value using a clearly stated convention. A high yield can reflect risks or expectations of shrinking cash flow, not just a bargain.

Use a single price date for every company and label the date. Then ask what revenue growth, margins, and reinvestment would be required to support the valuation. If you use forecasts, distinguish company guidance from analyst estimates and from your own assumptions. A multiple without those assumptions is a comparison of arithmetic, not a complete investment case.

How to make the comparison repeatable

  1. Collect primary disclosures: For each company, obtain its latest annual and quarterly reports. Read the audited financial statements, management discussion, segment notes, and risk factors rather than relying only on a headline multiple.
  2. Build a period-labeled worksheet: Record the fiscal period, revenue by segment, growth rates, margins, R&D, capital spending, inventory, operating cash flow, and free cash flow. Include the issuer’s metric definitions and mark GAAP and adjusted figures separately.
  3. Map revenue to its drivers: For each major segment, note whether growth comes from volume or adoption, pricing, mix, or recurring versus consumption-based revenue. Mark items the company does not disclose instead of filling gaps with guesses.
  4. Connect investment to returns: Review how spending and working capital relate to sales and cash generation over multiple periods. Consider whether the company is earning adequate returns on the capital it commits, using a consistent method.
  5. Record company-specific risks: Translate the issuer’s risk disclosures into observable items to monitor, such as customer concentration, inventory movement, export restrictions, or capacity use.
  6. Apply one valuation date: Add share price and valuation measures from the same date for all companies. State the earnings or cash-flow basis used and write down the operating assumptions that would justify the price.
  7. Keep the conclusion conditional: State what must go right for the valuation to make sense, what could weaken the business case, and which new filing or result would change your view. This turns the comparison into a testable framework rather than a sector-level ranking.

Annual results are backward-looking, and company guidance and market expectations can change. Update the worksheet when a new filing or price snapshot becomes available; do not treat an older illustration as a current valuation.
