Compare an at-home LED face mask by its intended skin concern, evidence for its specific wavelengths and treatment protocol, how it fits, and the safety directions for that exact model. A higher LED count, longer wavelength list, or “FDA-cleared” label alone does not establish that a mask will work better for you.

Start with the skin concern and the evidence

First decide what you want to address—such as crow’s feet or acne—and check that the mask is intended for that use. Then look for evidence on the exact device, or a sufficiently similar device and treatment protocol, with an outcome relevant to that concern. A study of one mask for wrinkles does not establish that other masks work, or that it treats a different concern.

A 2025 multicenter, randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled trial at two institutions enrolled 60 candidates. Participants used either a home mask emitting 630 nm LED and 850 nm IRED or a sham device for 12 weeks. The participants were Asian adults aged 30–65 with Fitzpatrick skin types II–V and crow’s-feet scores within the study’s selected range. The authors reported temporary improvement and tolerability for that protocol, and concluded that the treatments were effective, safe, well-tolerated, and painless for skin rejuvenation. Those conclusions apply to the trial—not to every device, user, or cosmetic indication. Read the study.

Compare wavelengths and output, not just the count

Record the wavelengths the manufacturer specifies, including any stated tolerance, and look for irradiance or dose information. Ask whether evidence supports those bands for the precise concern and protocol being considered. More wavelengths or LEDs do not, by themselves, show that a mask delivers a more effective treatment.

The 2025 trial offers evidence for its tested 630 nm LED and 850 nm IRED combination and crow’s-feet outcome. Its authors recommended combining those two wavelengths, but that is their conclusion from one trial, not a universal specification rule or a head-to-head ranking of masks. TIME reports a dermatologist’s general guidance of about 640 nm red and 830 nm infrared for skin improvements; that is expert guidance in a news article, not a clinical guideline or comparative trial. Read TIME’s report.

For example, CurrentBody lists 633 nm red, 830 nm near-infrared, and 1072 nm deep near-infrared among the specifications for its LED mask range. Treat these as manufacturer specifications for the listed model or generation, not as proof of comparative results. Product versions and listings can change, so verify the model identity and market before comparing specifications. See the manufacturer’s listing.

Check fit and the area the mask actually covers

A mask’s stated wavelengths matter less in practice if it does not sit securely across the treatment area. Check how it contacts the forehead, cheeks, nose, mouth, jaw, and the area around the eyes, and whether it stays in place during the full session. TIME quotes a dermatologist saying the device should be “touching or nearly touching” the skin for energy to be absorbed. That is the expert’s reported advice, not a formal standard for every device.

A wearable full-face mask may make even coverage easier to manage than a handheld device for someone seeking treatment across the face. But fit is individual: the available evidence does not establish that one shape suits every face. Check whether the package includes eye inserts or other protection, and whether those are comfortable and compatible with your needs.

Read the safety directions for the exact model

Before buying, check the manual for session length, frequency, eye precautions, cleaning instructions, and any stated contraindications. Follow the manufacturer’s directions rather than extending a session or borrowing another model’s schedule. TIME’s dermatologist interviews advise people with sensitive skin or light sensitivity to avoid use unless a doctor approves; ask a clinician about individual conditions, medications, pigment concerns, or eye issues rather than treating general advice as a complete contraindication list.

At-home masks use lower energy levels than office treatments, according to TIME, but that does not remove the need to follow device-specific instructions. Comfort, secure positioning, controller and charging arrangements, and the time commitment can also affect whether a device is practical to use consistently.

Understand what an FDA record does—and does not—say

Check the FDA record for the exact model and intended use. The FDA’s 510(k) database records the CurrentBody LED 4 in 1 Zone Facial Mapping Mask (K242593) as substantially equivalent, with a decision dated February 14, 2025; the record places it in the “Light Based Over The Counter Wrinkle Reduction” category. A separate summary for CurrentBody Skin LED Multi Light Therapy Mask (K260715) concerns another named submission and lists multiple modes and wavelengths, including 633 nm visible red, 830 nm non-visible red, and 1072 nm non-visible red. View record K242593 and read the K260715 summary.

A 510(k) substantial-equivalence finding is specific to a named device and submission. It is not FDA approval of every LED mask or blanket confirmation of all a manufacturer’s marketing claims. Match the record to the model number you are considering, and do not treat a record for one device as evidence for another.

Use the same checklist for each mask

  • Purpose: Which concern is the device intended to address?
  • Evidence: Is there a study on this exact device or a close protocol, and does it measure the outcome you care about?
  • Wavelength and output: What bands, tolerances, irradiance, or dose does the manufacturer state, and what evidence supports them?
  • Fit and coverage: Does it contact the areas you want to treat and stay comfortably positioned?
  • Protection and directions: What eye protection, schedule, cleaning steps, and warnings does the exact model’s manual specify?
  • Regulatory status: Does an FDA record name this model and intended use, and what wording does the record actually use?
  • Practical details: Can you manage the session routine, controller, and charging? Verify current warranty, return terms, and availability with the seller.

No independent head-to-head efficacy ranking for the commercial masks discussed here is established by the cited sources. Compare each device against your concern and practical needs rather than inferring a winner from LED count, wavelength count, or regulatory language alone.
