To compare PSSR fairly, look beyond a game’s 4K output label: check the mode’s internal rendering resolution, whether it changes dynamically, frame-rate behavior, visual settings, and which version of PSSR the game uses. PSSR reconstructs an image from game-rendered input on PS5 Pro; a 4K output is not proof that the game rendered every pixel natively at 4K. There is no universal winner—results depend on the game, mode, and what you value.
What PSSR changes—and what it does not
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) is Sony’s AI-based image reconstruction and upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. Sony describes it as an AI library that analyzes each frame pixel by pixel as it upscales game visuals. Sony’s March 2026 explanation describes the technology and its support in games.
In practice, a game can render at a lower internal resolution and use PSSR to produce an image for a higher-resolution output. Sony gives a developer-mode example of rendering at 1440p, upscaling to 4K with PSSR, and targeting 60 fps. That describes a particular mode, not a standard shared by all PSSR games. Sony’s PS5 Pro developer examples also describe a Final Fantasy VII Rebirth enhanced mode that runs at 60 FPS and uses PSSR to reach resolution on par with its graphics mode.
Nor is PSSR used only to convert a sub-4K source into a 4K output. Polyphony Digital’s developer comments about Gran Turismo 7 say PSSR can also be effective with a 4K-rendered source. The source resolution alone therefore does not tell you whether a game uses PSSR or what visual result it produces.

What to compare between game modes
Mode names such as “Quality” and “Performance” are useful shorthand, not technical specifications. Compare the actual implementation in the particular game and patch.
| Comparison point | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Internal rendering resolution | Find out whether the mode renders at a fixed resolution or uses dynamic resolution scaling. | A displayed 4K signal does not establish native 4K rendering, and a dynamic mode may vary its internal resolution during play. |
| Output resolution | Record the game’s output resolution separately from its internal rendering resolution. | Output describes the image sent to the display; it does not reveal how that image was produced. |
| Frame-rate target and behavior | Note the stated target, then assess consistency and responsiveness separately from image sharpness. | A target is not a guarantee of a locked frame rate, and a sharp still frame says little about motion performance. |
| Visual settings | Check ray tracing and other mode-specific settings, not just resolution. | A mode may trade among rendering resolution, frame rate, and visual features. |
| PSSR version and support | Check whether PSSR is enabled and whether the game uses the original or updated version. | Supported titles and versions change; a comparison of one implementation does not represent every PSSR game. |
| Display and output setup | Record the display’s resolution and refresh-rate capabilities and the console’s output settings. | Display capabilities affect what you can see and use, but do not guarantee a particular game frame rate. |
How to make a fair comparison
- Choose one game and record the setup. Note the game version or patch, PS5 Pro, display, output settings, and the exact graphics mode. Mode behavior can change between patches.
- Separate rendering from output. Look for reliable information about the mode’s internal resolution and output resolution. Do not infer native resolution from a “4K” display or signal label.
- Check for dynamic scaling. Establish whether internal resolution stays fixed or varies, and distinguish a target resolution from the range or behavior the game actually uses.
- Record frame-rate claims independently. A 60 fps target, for example, is not by itself evidence of consistent performance. Consider motion, frame pacing, and responsiveness separately from image detail.
- Confirm PSSR use and version. Sony says an optional PS5 Pro setting can enable enhanced PSSR image quality for supported titles that use the original version; updated PSSR support also depends on the game. Check current game and system information rather than assuming every PSSR title uses the same version. Sony’s update notes describe the setting and support information.
- Compare the same scene in motion. Use the same area, camera angle, lighting, and movement in each mode where possible. Inspect fine detail and temporal stability during motion, then judge frame pacing and responsiveness on their own.
- Describe the trade-off for that game. State which mode better fits the reader’s priorities, and identify the settings or performance behavior behind that judgment. Avoid turning a result from one scene or title into a claim about all games.
Why mode results differ from game to game
Developers can give modes different internal resolutions, dynamic scaling behavior, frame-rate targets, and visual settings. Assassin’s Creed Shadows is one concrete example: Ubisoft says its PS5 Pro Performance, Balanced, and Quality modes use different internal resolutions with Dynamic Resolution Scaling, and that updated PSSR benefits all three. That is a description of this game’s modes, not a template for every title. Ubisoft’s PS5 Pro mode explanation provides the details.

PSSR itself has evolved. Mark Cerny, PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect at Sony Interactive Entertainment, said the upgraded version takes “a very different approach to not only the neural network but also the overall algorithm.” In its February 27, 2026 announcement, Sony said PSSR had been used to boost the effective resolution of over 50 PS5 Pro titles. That is Sony’s title count, not an independent benchmark, and it does not mean every listed game uses the same version or reaches the same resolution or frame rate. Sony’s announcement describes the updated approach and figure.
When comparing modes, use the game’s current documentation and patch details where available. A label such as “Quality” does not tell you by itself whether a mode uses PSSR, what resolution it renders internally, or how well it holds its performance target.

How to choose the mode that suits you
- Prioritize image detail? Compare fine detail and stability in motion, as well as resolution. A still image may hide artifacts or instability that appear during movement.
- Prioritize responsiveness? Focus on frame-rate behavior and input feel rather than assuming a mode’s name guarantees a particular result.
- Want a balance? Compare all available modes in the same scene; a Balanced mode may combine settings differently from either Quality or Performance.
- Using a 60Hz or 120Hz display? Treat its refresh-rate capability as a display feature, not a promise that a specific game mode will run at that frame rate. Sony lists support for 60Hz and 120Hz displays among PS5 Pro features, but game performance remains title-specific. Sony’s PS5 Pro feature page describes those display features.
The most useful comparison is a title-specific one: what each mode renders internally, what it outputs, how it behaves in motion, which visual settings it enables, and whether it uses original or updated PSSR. Sony and developers describe examples and intended benefits, but those sources do not establish a universal image-quality or frame-rate advantage for PSSR over native rendering.
