Compare evidence from several sources, not just a product’s star average. For customer reviews, check who posted them, when they appeared and whether an incentive was disclosed. For expert tests, look for a clear method, the exact model tested and a distinction between measured results and owner feedback. Then judge whether that evidence fits your intended use and compare the exact product’s total price.

Start with more than one source

A product page can show what some buyers say, but it cannot establish the whole picture. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recommends considering multiple sources, including trusted, impartial expert reviews. Its online-shopping guidance suggests comparing customer reviews across retailer and review sites, search engines, app stores and social platforms—and not relying on star ratings alone. The FTC’s guide to evaluating online reviews and its online-shopping advice offer a useful starting point.

Use sources to answer different questions: owner reviews can reveal how a product behaves in everyday use, while a transparent expert test may measure performance under defined conditions. Neither source type automatically settles whether a product is right for you.

How to judge customer reviews

Check the source, timing and reviewer history

Notice where a review appears and what is known about the reviewer. If the site makes reviewer history available, see whether the account has a pattern of useful, relevant reviews. A new account with only one product review may be worth examining more closely, but it is not proof of a fake review.

Look at dates as well. A sudden burst of reviews can be a reason to investigate whether something unusual happened, but timing alone does not establish manipulation. The FTC cautions that it can be nearly impossible to identify a fake review just by looking; fake reviews can be positive or negative.

Look for incentives, then read the details

Some platforms label reviews when the reviewer received a product, payment or other incentive; others may not. An incentive disclosure is relevant context, not proof that the review is false. Read the review itself for concrete details about the product, the situation in which it was used and the specific benefits or problems described.

Do not treat an unusually glowing or harsh tone as a reliable fraud detector. Instead, look for recurring, specific observations across different sources and consider whether they apply to the model and use case you care about. The FTC’s advice is to read reviews critically, not to assume visual clues can reliably sort real from fake.

How to assess an expert test

Find out what was tested and how

A score is more useful when the publisher explains how it was produced. Look for the products or samples selected, the test protocol or benchmarks, and what each measurement represents. Check whether the organization describes how it obtained samples and whether the test reflects the current model or version.

5Strands Food Intolerance Test for Adults & Kids, 800 Items Tested
  • IDENTIFY WHICH FOODS MAY BE CAUSING YOUR SYMPTOMS. Food intolerances happen when your gut microbiome and digestive enzymes can’t break down a food ingredient. Although gluten and lactose are the most common issues, intolerances can happen with any food item. When these intolerances go unchecked, symptoms like headaches, gas, diarrhea, acne, and bloating may develop.
  • TESTS 800 COMMON FOOD ITEMS. Our food intolerance test for adults and children covers 14 major food categories: dairy, vegetables, fruits, grains, meats, seafood, nuts, sweeteners, spices, fats, oils, mushrooms, superfoods, and preservatives.
  • HOW IT WORKS. (1) Register your test kit on the 5Strands website or mobile app (2) Collect 10-15 strands of hair. (3) Send your sample to our certified lab using the included prepaid shipping materials. (4) Once your sample is received, we’ll email you the results within 4 days. After 60 days, your hair sample will be permanently disposed of.
  • EASY TO READ RESULTS. Each food item is labeled as Insignificant, Mild, Moderate, or Severe to help guide your elimination plan. This gives you clear directions to begin removing severe intolerance foods, moderate your intake of mid-level triggers, and keep safe foods in rotation to support gut health, digestion, and symptom relief.
  • 3RD PARTY STUDIED & DOCTOR RECOMMENDED. 5Strands is the only intolerance and sensitivity test independently validated through third-party research. Every sample is processed in our certified U.S. lab using a double-pass method for accurate results, and our testing has helped over 345,000 people and pets uncover their food intolerances and environmental sensitivities.

Consumer Reports says its staff develop test protocols and buy products for testing, including through secret shoppers. It also says its ratings combine laboratory performance with product-owner reliability and satisfaction data. That describes Consumer Reports’ approach; it is not a universal standard for every testing publisher. See Consumer Reports’ description of its testing work.

Separate test measurements from owner evidence

A lab measurement, an owner survey and a predicted reliability result are different kinds of evidence. A controlled test can help answer how a sample performed on a defined task. Owner reports can help describe experience over time or satisfaction. A combined score may include both, so check which part a quoted result represents rather than treating all scores as direct performance measurements.

REV X E85 Super Tester - Reusable Gasoline Ethanol Testing Kit
  • Test your fuel for proper ethanol levels to ensure it does not damage your engine. Test kit also tests for e85.
  • Simple test to discover the percentage of ethanol alcohol in gasoline. With readings of e10, e15, e20, e25, e80, e85 and e90
  • High levels of ethanol could damage your fuel system and lower your fuel mileage.
  • Ethanol can damage motors not equipped or designed to use it, test your gasoline first.
  • Easy to read label and instructions that is laminated to prevent fading or the ink rubbing off. Testing bottle can be reused over and over.

There is no universal formula for how much weight to give each kind of evidence. The useful balance depends on the product, your intended use and how long you expect to use it. A measured feature may matter most for one buyer; for another, reliability reports or everyday usability may be more relevant.

Match the test to your needs and its date

Read beyond an overall score to see how the product performed on the criteria you care about. A strong aggregate result does not by itself show that a product meets a particular need. Check the test date and the exact version tested; without that match, do not assume a result still describes the item currently for sale. There is no single update interval that makes every test current.

Confirm the exact product and compare the full cost

Before relying on a review or test, verify that it concerns the same manufacturer and model as the item you are considering. Check relevant size, configuration or other variant details: similar product names can refer to different versions, and results for one should not automatically be applied to another. The FTC recommends recording the manufacturer, model number and relevant item details when comparison shopping.

Compare offers separately from product evidence. Include shipping, handling, delivery, taxes and other fees in the total rather than comparing headline prices alone. A lower price is not a like-for-like deal if the model, condition or included items differ.

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Identify the exact item. Record the manufacturer, model number and relevant variant or size.
  2. Gather independent perspectives. Compare customer feedback from more than one venue with expert coverage where available.
  3. Inspect review context. Check dates, reviewer history and incentive disclosures; treat suspicious patterns as prompts to investigate, not proof.
  4. Inspect test context. Find the test method, sample or model, date and criteria, and identify whether the result is a measurement, owner survey, reliability estimate or blend.
  5. Prioritize what matters to your use. Compare the specific findings relevant to your needs instead of choosing by the highest overall score or star average.
  6. Compare the actual offers. Confirm model and condition, then add delivery and other charges to find the total cost.

What review-fraud numbers can—and cannot—tell you

The FTC’s 2024 final-rule document recounts a study estimating that consumers lost $0.12 for every dollar spent in an experimental setting. The document notes that the underlying study covered a limited set of review-manipulation types. That figure is not a universal estimate for every platform, product or kind of fake review, and it does not tell you whether a particular review is genuine. The sources cited here do not establish a generally applicable percentage of product reviews that are fake.

U.S. rule context

In the United States, the FTC’s materials on endorsements and reviews describe its Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule as addressing fake and false reviews, alongside related endorsement and disclosure resources. These materials are U.S.-specific; they do not establish the legal requirements that apply in every other country. See the FTC’s endorsement and review guidance.
