Compare the full cost and service terms—not just the advertised monthly price. A deal may depend on autopay, multiple lines, device installments, or bill credits, and its price can change when a promotion ends. Before switching, check the offer’s conditions, usage rules, coverage where you need service, cancellation terms, and number-porting steps.
Start with what you pay and actually use
Write down your current monthly charges and the features your household relies on, such as data, calling, and the number of lines. This gives you a baseline for deciding whether a new plan saves money without removing service you need. Include device payments separately from the service charge so you can see what each cost covers.
Do not treat a headline price as the amount every customer will pay. Ask the carrier to confirm the total monthly price for your circumstances, including applicable fees and any requirements to qualify for a discount. Offers change, so verify current terms directly with the carrier before enrolling.
Compare the deal price with the price after the deal
For each plan, record the advertised price, the price you qualify for, how long any promotion lasts, and what the service will cost after it ends. Check whether the discount requires autopay, multiple lines, or another condition, and whether losing that condition changes the price.

Device installments and bill credits can affect the real cost of a promotion. The Iowa Attorney General notes that mobile promotions may depend on installment plans or bill credits, and advises consumers to ask for written confirmation of the monthly price, promotional period, and promised credits. Keep the written offer and note the promotion’s end date and credit conditions. That gives you something concrete to compare against later bills.

Compare service rules, not just the word “unlimited”
Plans can differ in data or usage limits and in what happens when you reach or exceed them. Check whether the carrier may reduce speed or service quality, and under what conditions. The California Attorney General advises consumers to examine limits and possible speed or quality reductions on unlimited plans; the FCC also identifies usage limits and their consequences as plan terms that vary. Write down the relevant rule for each plan rather than assuming plans with similar names work the same way. If a carrier’s explanation is unclear, ask what happens when you reach the limit and whether any speed or quality changes apply.

Check coverage where you use your phone
Consider the places you regularly need service, such as home, work, and your usual travel areas. Coverage claims matter only insofar as they fit your locations and needs, so check the carrier’s current coverage information and ask about trying service before committing.
Also find out how long you can test the service and coverage before cancellation costs apply. The California Attorney General recommends checking cancellation conditions as part of understanding a phone-service deal.

Review cancellation and number-porting details before switching
Ask what you may owe if you cancel, including any remaining device balance or credits tied to the offer. Confirm with both providers what account or device information is needed and how to transfer your number. Do not assume credits will continue unchanged after a switch; ask how cancellation affects them.
The FCC Consumer Complaint Center says customers who switch providers and stay in the same geographic area can keep their existing phone number. Use a side-by-side comparison
For every candidate plan, keep the same set of details. If an offer does not state a term clearly, ask the carrier rather than filling in the gap with an assumption.

Finish with a written offer and a final price check
- Record your current monthly charges and the services your household uses.
- For each offer, write down the standard and promotional prices, promotion end date, discount requirements, fees, device payments, and credit conditions.
- Compare usage rules and check coverage in your regular locations.
- Ask about cancellation costs, remaining device balances or credits, and the steps to transfer your number.
- Save the plan terms and written confirmation, then confirm the current total price directly with the carrier before you enroll.
