BackstopJS compares browser-rendered screenshots against approved reference images. To compare pages across browser engines, configure a browser engine, capture and approve a reference set for it, then repeat the process for each engine you want to test. A default run does not automatically create an all-browser comparison matrix.
What BackstopJS compares—and what it does not
BackstopJS is a screenshot-based visual regression tool: it captures a reference image, captures a test image later, and reports visual differences for review. Its documented default rendering engine is Puppeteer. The project also documents a Playwright engine that can use Chromium, Firefox, or WebKit.
Those engine choices are not the same as testing every branded browser release. Playwright says its Firefox is patched and is not branded Firefox, and its WebKit build comes from the latest WebKit main branch rather than branded Safari. Playwright documents Chrome and Edge branded channels separately. Choose coverage according to whether you need broad engine checks or fidelity to a particular browser release.

Then define the pages and states that matter in BackstopJS configuration. A scenario identifies the URL under test; scenarios can also define selectors, readiness conditions, and interactions. The viewports configuration specifies the viewport sizes to capture. Start with a small set of important pages and states rather than trying to cover every route at once.
2. Keep capture conditions aligned
For each scenario, make the captured state reproducible: use the same URL, viewport, selector, readiness condition, and pre-capture interactions when creating references and running later tests. If content changes while loading, use an appropriate readiness condition or interaction so the screenshot represents the intended state.
Browser engine, browser version, operating system, viewport, page state, and readiness conditions can all affect a screenshot. Keep them consistent when investigating a diff. This matters especially when references are shared among developers or generated in different environments.

3. Capture references and run a test
Use the configured BackstopJS workflow to create the initial reference screenshots, then run a test capture:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesbackstop test
Review the generated report and compare the test images with their references. A reported difference is a prompt to inspect the change, not proof that the page is broken: it may reflect an intended design update or a rendering-environment difference.
4. Approve only intentional changes
When you have confirmed that a visual change is intended, update the references with:

backstop approve
Approval replaces the reference collection used for later comparisons. Do not approve a diff merely to clear the report; first determine whether the changed output is expected.
Configure browser-engine coverage
BackstopJS documents Puppeteer as its default engine. For Playwright-based coverage, configure the Playwright engine and set engineOptions.browser to chromium, firefox, or webkit. When switching engines, the BackstopJS README says to use Playwright’s onBefore and onReady scripts.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Run the reference-and-test workflow separately for each engine or browser channel you want to compare. Treat each capture set as its own baseline: comparing a Firefox-engine screenshot against a Chromium reference would mix browser differences with page changes. The documented README does not describe an automatic run that compares every browser in one matrix.

Choose coverage that matches the question
- Broad engine coverage: use Playwright projects for Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit.
- Current branded Chrome or Edge: use the corresponding Playwright branded channel when matching those releases matters.
- Safari-adjacent behavior: use macOS WebKit when platform-specific behavior is important. Playwright notes macOS WebKit is closer to Safari than Linux WebKit for cases such as video playback.
Playwright’s browser binaries are updated with Playwright releases, so pin and manage the Playwright version in your project rather than assuming a browser build remains fixed indefinitely. Its documentation also notes that platform-dependent behavior, including media codec availability, varies by operating system.
Make rendering differences easier to diagnose
BackstopJS provides a Docker rendering option intended to help make comparisons more consistent across environments; its documentation specifically warns that text can render differently between environments. Standardizing the rendering environment can reduce noise when references are generated on one machine and tests run on another.
Docker does not make its output equivalent to every user’s installed branded browser. If the question is how the current Chrome or Edge release renders a page, use the relevant branded channel. If Safari-like, platform-specific behavior such as video playback is the concern, use macOS WebKit. Choose and record the environment that answers the test question, then keep it stable for reference and test captures.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Troubleshoot misleading or unexpected diffs
- Large diffs on the first run: confirm that you are comparing against references created for the same engine, viewport, and page state. Create a deliberate baseline before interpreting subsequent runs.
- Text differs between machines: standardize the rendering environment, such as with BackstopJS’s Docker option, and compare references and tests under that same setup.
- A page is captured before it is ready: adjust the scenario’s readiness condition or interaction so the relevant content has reached the intended state before capture.
- Video or other platform-dependent content differs: check the operating system and browser engine. Playwright notes that codec availability can depend on the platform; macOS WebKit is closer to Safari for cases such as video playback.
- Firefox or WebKit output does not match installed Firefox or Safari: Playwright’s Firefox and WebKit builds are not the branded browsers. Use the documented Chrome or Edge channel options when branded Chrome or Edge fidelity is required; do not label Playwright WebKit as Safari.
- A diff is intentional: inspect it and run
backstop approveonly after deciding the new appearance should become the baseline.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot rather than a BackstopJS visual-regression workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a one-request website screenshot API. It does not replace BackstopJS’s reference-and-approval process or supply an automatic browser matrix, but it can remove the need to install and configure a browser for a capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed, along with supported newsletter popups and chat widgets, before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot and page-information tools. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
Sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month, with no card required.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does BackstopJS compare Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit in one default run?
No. Configure the engine and run the reference-and-test workflow for each coverage target; the documented default does not automatically run an all-browser matrix.
Are Playwright WebKit screenshots the same as Safari screenshots?
No. Playwright describes its WebKit build as coming from the latest WebKit main branch, not branded Safari. For Safari-adjacent, platform-specific behavior, use macOS WebKit.
