Start with your goal and time horizon, then compare schemes with compatible objectives and benchmarks using their latest factsheets, Scheme Information Documents (SIDs), portfolios, risk disclosures, costs, and like-for-like performance periods.
Start with your goal, time horizon, and tolerance for loss
Before comparing fund houses, write down what the money is for, when you expect to need it, how much liquidity you may require, and how much loss you could tolerate. These factors help you judge whether a scheme’s mandate and risks suit your circumstances; they do not identify a universally best AMC.
AMFI describes mutual funds as exposed to market and other risks, not guaranteed or assured-return products. Its investor education guidance explains broad scheme categories and their differing objectives and risks: AMFI: What are mutual funds?
Compare schemes with compatible mandates
Compare schemes in the same broad category and with compatible objectives. Equity, debt, hybrid, solution-oriented, and other schemes can behave differently; ranking a debt scheme against an equity scheme by raw returns does not show which AMC is better. Even similar scheme labels do not establish that two portfolios, benchmarks, or risk profiles are alike.
#1 Best Overall
Check each scheme’s stated objective and benchmark before comparing results. AMFI’s category guidance can help orient the comparison, but the scheme documents determine the specific mandate: AMFI category and scheme guidance.
Use current factsheets and the SID
Gather the latest available factsheet for each scheme and its Scheme Information Document (SID). AMFI describes factsheets as presenting information such as scheme name and objective, fund manager and experience, average and latest assets under management (AUM), NAV, loads, benchmark, expense ratio, portfolio allocations, volatility measures, and performance. The SID provides scheme details that a summary may omit.
Rank #2
AMFI provides a directory of AMC factsheets: AMFI factsheet directory. Use the same disclosure date where possible, and compare the same plan type and matching return periods. AUM, holdings, NAV, costs, and other scheme information can change, so note the date of the documents you use.
What to record for each scheme
- Mandate and benchmark: Confirm the objective, category, and benchmark used to assess performance.
- Portfolio and allocation: Review the actual holdings and asset allocation rather than inferring them from the AMC or scheme name.
- Management: Note the fund manager and relevant experience stated in the factsheet.
- Scale and risk information: Record AUM and the disclosed volatility measures alongside the Riskometer.
- Costs and terms: Capture applicable expense disclosures and exit-load conditions from current scheme material.
- Performance: Compare identical stated periods against the relevant benchmark, not just against another scheme’s headline return.
Read risk labels alongside the portfolio
The Riskometer is a useful starting point, not a complete comparison. AMFI cautions that schemes displaying the same risk level may not be similar in nature. Look at the underlying portfolio, asset allocation, benchmark, fund manager, and other quantitative and qualitative factors as well as the label.

Risk measures and holdings help explain what a scheme owns and how its risks may differ; they do not remove the possibility of loss. AMFI’s guidance on scheme risk and comparison factors is available at AMFI: Riskometer and scheme risk.
Compare returns on equal terms
Use the same stated periods for each scheme and compare results with the relevant benchmark. A recent top performer is not automatically suitable for your goal, and raw returns across different categories are not a fair AMC ranking. AMFI states: “Past performance does not guarantee future performance of any Mutual Fund Scheme.” See AMFI investor education on mutual fund risks and performance.
Rank #4
Compare expenses and exit loads carefully
AMFI explains that the total expense ratio (TER) is charged as a percentage of average NAV, affects NAV, and is disclosed daily. Its current TER interface offers scheme-level filters and describes Base Expense Ratio (BER) and brokerage-cost information under the 2026 regulations. Check the figures for equivalent schemes and plans, their disclosure date, and the definitions being shown rather than relying on an undated comparison.
Use AMFI’s current interface to inspect the applicable scheme disclosures: AMFI TER disclosures. Also check each scheme’s current exit-load terms in its scheme material. A lower expense figure is one consideration, not proof of better suitability or overall quality.

What AMC-level evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Factsheets, SIDs, TER disclosures, portfolios, and risk information support comparisons between schemes. They do not, by themselves, establish that one AMC is superior in governance, complaint handling, customer service, or operational resilience. Treat those as separate questions and seek current, comparable official disclosures before drawing firm conclusions; do not infer a ranking from a brand’s familiarity or a single scheme’s results.
If you need help interpreting a SID or factsheet, AMFI says an adviser may assist: AMFI guidance on financial planning and advisers. That guidance does not establish the credentials or suitability of any particular adviser.
Quick Recap
A practical comparison sequence
- Write down your purpose: Record the goal, expected holding period, liquidity needs, and capacity to tolerate losses.
- Choose comparable schemes: Filter for compatible categories, objectives, and benchmarks; do not compare unlike categories by headline return.
- Collect current documents: Download the latest factsheets from AMFI’s factsheet directory and read each scheme’s SID.
- Compare the same disclosures: Match plan type, data date, and performance periods; review holdings, managers, AUM, risk information, and benchmark.
- Check costs and terms: Review the applicable TER disclosures in AMFI’s TER interface and the scheme’s exit-load terms.
- Decide on fit, not a single score: Weigh mandate, portfolio, risk, costs, and historical performance against your purpose; no one metric or AMC name establishes the right choice.
