To compare lumber quotes fairly, first make sure they cover the same product, quantity, unit and delivery point. Then convert each offer to a delivered cost, list what is included or excluded, and check any import duties against the exact product, origin and customs-entry date. A market index can help explain price movements, but it is not a substitute for a supplier’s quote.

1. Match the lumber specifications

A low price is meaningful only if the material is equivalent. For every offer, record the product details before comparing totals:

  • Species and grade, including the grading authority or specification used.
  • Dimensions and lengths; confirm whether dimensions are nominal or finished/net.
  • Moisture condition, such as green, air-dried or kiln-dried, and any treatment or finish.
  • Quantity and packaging, including minimum order requirements.

Do not assume two products are interchangeable because both are described broadly as framing lumber. A historical U.S. lumber-code example shows the kinds of fields often captured in orders—species, grade, quantity, sizes, item price, sale terms and drying condition—but it is not a current universal quote rule: historical lumber code.

2. Put every price on the same basis

Convert each offer to one common unit, such as the same volume or piece basis, and use the same destination. Check the quote’s unit carefully: a price per piece cannot be compared directly with a price per thousand board feet. If dimensions or volume conventions differ, establish what each supplier used before converting.

General Tools MMD4E Moisture Meter for Wood, Walls & Water Leak Detection

Continuously check and test suspicious water stains around the house so you can determine whether the area is wet or has already dried. Then account for costs needed to get the lumber to your destination. Ask in writing whether the quoted price includes freight, insurance, customs brokerage, duties, taxes, unloading, handling and other accessorial charges. Note the delivery term and which party pays each charge. Add each cost only once: a delivered quote and a mill-price or FOB-style offer are not comparable at face value.

3. Check quote validity and price-change terms

Timber prices can move between quote, order and delivery. Record each offer’s expiration date, expected delivery timing and any price-adjustment or escalation clause. If a supplier can reprice before shipment, clarify what triggers the change, how it is calculated and when the price becomes firm. Compare those terms alongside the quoted amount rather than treating all prices as fixed.

4. Verify import duties for the actual shipment

Duty is not a single lumber-wide percentage. It can depend on the importing country, product form and classification, origin, and entry date. Identify those details for the shipment, then check the applicable official tariff schedule and customs guidance. Do not apply a duty to an item merely because it shares a broad label with covered lumber products.

For U.S. entries

U.S. Customs and Border Protection guidance reports an additional 10% ad valorem Section 232 duty, effective October 14, 2025, for specified softwood timber and lumber classifications under Proclamation 10976. It does not establish that every wood product is covered or that this is the only charge on a shipment. Confirm the current scope, classification and entry instructions with CBP’s Section 232 guidance, the presidential proclamation and the USITC Harmonized Tariff Schedule. The cited HTSUS page is a classification reference, not a ruling for every product.

For Canadian softwood entering the United States

Check antidumping and countervailing duties separately from any other applicable tariff. Global Affairs Canada describes U.S. orders and review results; its page labels the displayed 2026 seventh-review rates preliminary or post-preliminary and says they are not effective. It said final results were expected by October 2026 if fully extended. Do not use those preliminary figures as final landed-cost inputs; check current official determinations and effective dates for the specific company and entry: Global Affairs Canada’s review update.

For a particular shipment, verify classification and current duties with the relevant customs authority or a qualified customs professional. A comparison framework cannot determine a shipment’s tariff treatment without its destination, product details, origin, terms and entry date.

RDINSCOS Replaceable Pins Moisture Meter
  • FIND HIDDEN WALL MOISTURE EARLY — Check suspicious drywall and building surfaces after a leak, water stain, or other moisture concern. Detect abnormal moisture before a small issue develops into more extensive damage and costly repairs
  • CHECK BEFORE YOU REPAIR — Don't rely on a wall looking or feeling dry. Use the moisture meter to check questionable areas before painting, repairing, or covering the surface, helping you make decisions based on actual moisture readings.
  • CHECK FIREWOOD BEFORE YOU BURN — Test firewood before placing it in your fireplace or wood stove. Knowing the moisture level of your firewood helps you choose wood that is ready for burning and avoid relying on appearance alone.
  • PIN-TYPE TESTING FOR DIRECT MEASUREMENTS — The contact pins penetrate the material to measure moisture inside wood and building materials. This makes it useful for checking areas where surface conditions may not tell the whole story.
  • ONE TOOL FOR TWO IMPORTANT HOME CHECKS — Keep it ready for two practical jobs: checking walls for hidden moisture and checking firewood before burning. A simple way to make informed decisions before a moisture problem becomes expensive or wood goes into the fireplace.

5. Use market indexes as context, not as a competing quote

State the index, unit and date when using a market benchmark. The National Association of Home Builders reported Madison’s Lumber Price Index at $521.35 per 1,000 board feet on August 28, 2026. That dated market figure is not a supplier price for a specific grade, region, delivery date or destination: NAHB’s lumber-price analysis.

Index changes may not reach buyers immediately. NAHB says falling-price relief can take weeks to a couple of months and varies with supplier and buyer relationships, while rising costs may reach builders more quickly. Use an index to understand market direction; use current written offers and their terms to decide what a purchase will cost.
