Compare liquid mutual funds on three separate questions: what they returned over the same past period, what their portfolios hold and how much risk they carry, and when a redemption gets its NAV and reaches your bank account. Liquid funds are market-linked schemes, not guaranteed deposits; category rules do not make every scheme interchangeable.
Compare historical returns on the same basis
Returns are useful for comparing what schemes did, not for predicting what they will do. The Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI) says liquid-fund returns depend on short-term interest rates and on the tenor and credit quality of securities held. Its description of mutual fund scheme types explains the category and its return drivers.
For a fair comparison, use scheme returns from the same as-of date and identical trailing periods. Match plan type—direct with direct, or regular with regular—and check whether a quoted figure is annualized. A return from one period or plan cannot be compared cleanly with a different period or plan. Treat all past figures as historical, not promised returns.
Compare portfolio risk, not just the liquid-fund label
AMFI describes liquid schemes as investing in money-market instruments with maturities not exceeding 91 days. That category constraint does not mean each scheme owns the same securities or has identical risk.

For each fund, review its current portfolio and scheme disclosures. Compare:
- Credit quality: Check the issuers and credit quality of the securities held.
- Maturity profile: Look at the tenor of holdings, not only the category’s maximum maturity rule.
- Risk disclosure: Read the scheme’s current risk information and consider liquidity and default risks.
AMFI warns that mutual fund schemes are not guaranteed or assured-return products and identifies risks including liquidity risk, default risk, and loss of principal. See its mutual fund risk guidance. A liquid fund is not a deposit with guaranteed repayment or return.

Separate redemption NAV timing from redemption payout time
The NAV applicable to a redemption and the date cash arrives are different facts. AMFI’s cut-off and applicable-NAV guidance states that a liquid-fund redemption received by 3:00 p.m. gets the closing NAV of the day immediately preceding the next business day. If received after 3:00 p.m., it gets the closing NAV of the next business day.
This cutoff determines the applicable NAV; it is not a promise that money will arrive at 3:00 p.m. AMFI’s investor guidance on mutual fund advantages says liquid- and overnight-fund redemption proceeds are paid the next business day. Treat that as category-level guidance, not instant access: check the scheme and platform’s current operational terms, applicable business-day calendar, and any stated conditions or limits.

Check subscription NAV rules if you are comparing purchase timing
Purchase timing also has a cutoff, but the time an application is received is not the only consideration. AMFI’s cut-off guidance describes a 1:30 p.m. cutoff for liquid-fund subscriptions and makes the applicable NAV dependent on when the funds are available for utilization. For a particular purchase, verify the current AMFI and fund guidance and confirm when the payment is realized; submitting an order before the cutoff alone does not establish the NAV.
Compare costs and plan terms
Compare the same plan type when assessing returns, and check the current scheme information for expenses and other plan terms. Also check the scheme-specific exit load, if any. AMFI explains that the redemption price takes an exit load into account in its NAV guidance. Do not assume the load or other terms are identical across schemes or remain unchanged.

Use a dated, like-for-like comparison
Build the comparison from scheme factsheets or official scheme pages that share one data-collection date. Record the details together so a return figure is not separated from the portfolio and terms that give it context.

Without contemporaneous scheme-level data, there is no sound basis to name a current “best” liquid fund. A higher historical return alone does not settle the comparison: it needs to be read alongside portfolio risk, costs, and the redemption terms relevant to your cash needs.
