Compare iPhones by matching their camera lenses and video features to what you shoot, checking the same battery metric across models, and judging chip generation against your actual workload. Apple’s specifications tell you what a phone supports and give manufacturer battery estimates; they do not establish which camera looks best, how long a phone will last in your routine, or how fast it performs in independent testing.

Start with the iPhones you can actually buy

Apple’s iPhone comparison page lets you review a range of generations, but the models shown there are not a guarantee of current stock. Narrow the list to phones that fit your budget, preferred size, storage needs, and local availability. Check the current listing for the exact configuration, seller, condition, and price before buying; these can vary by retailer and region.

Use official specifications to identify capabilities, then treat camera quality, everyday battery endurance, and speed as separate questions that require comparable real-world evidence. A newer generation is not automatically the better value if an older model has the features you need at a suitable price.

Compare camera coverage and video features

Begin with the shots you take most often. A higher megapixel count alone does not tell you which phone produces the better-looking image: lens coverage, zoom type, shooting modes, and processing all matter. Apple’s specification pages establish available hardware and modes, not a universal ranking of image quality.

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  • Main camera: The everyday lens for general photos. Compare its stated resolution and capabilities, but do not use resolution as a substitute for image-quality comparisons.
  • Ultra-wide: Useful for fitting landscapes, buildings, or groups into the frame when stepping back is not practical. Check whether the model has a dedicated ultra-wide camera.
  • Telephoto and zoom: Optical telephoto reach uses a dedicated lens; digital zoom enlarges a crop. Check the specifications for the type of zoom and reach rather than comparing zoom numbers without context.
  • Macro and low-light options: If close-up subjects or dim scenes are common, check for the specific modes and hardware you need.
  • Video: Compare supported resolution and frame rates, stabilization, and recording formats. ProRes and ProRes RAW can matter to people with editing workflows; they are not necessary criteria for every casual video.

For example, Apple lists the iPhone 17 with 48MP main and ultra-wide cameras, an optical-quality 2x telephoto option, and 48MP macro photography on its iPhone 17 specifications page. Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro specifications page lists ProRes and ProRes RAW video options. Those differences help identify which capabilities each model offers; they do not prove which one will take a better-looking photo in every scene. Apple also lists main, telephoto, and ultra-wide camera specifications for iPhone 16, so compare the particular lens features you would use rather than choosing by generation number alone (iPhone 16 specifications).

Compare battery figures on equal terms

First identify what a quoted battery number measures. Local video playback and streamed video playback are different metrics, so compare like with like; do not treat either as a direct prediction of daily screen time.

Model Apple’s stated video playback Apple’s stated streamed video playback What the figure represents
iPhone 17 Up to 30 hours Up to 27 hours Manufacturer estimates on Apple’s specification page, not an independent test result (Apple).
iPhone 17 Pro Up to 33 hours Up to 30 hours Manufacturer estimates on Apple’s specification page, not an independent test result (Apple).
iPhone 16 Not stated here Not stated here The cited iPhone 16 specification page supports chip and camera details, but the figures above do not establish its playback estimates (Apple).

Apple’s “up to” figures are controlled manufacturer estimates, not a promise of how long a phone will last between charges for a particular person. Actual use varies with activities, network conditions, settings, and battery age. If battery life is a deciding factor, look for independent tests that use the same method and conditions for every model under consideration; no comparable independent battery results are established here.

Judge performance by the work you do

Chip generation is a useful first filter, not a complete measure of speed. Apple lists an A19 chip with a 6-core CPU for iPhone 17 and an A18 chip for iPhone 16 (iPhone 17 specifications; iPhone 16 specifications). Those model specifications identify the chips, but do not quantify how much faster one phone is in a given task.

  • 6.1inch Super Retina XDR display. Aluminum with color-infused glass back. Ring/Silent switch
  • Dynamic Island. A magical way to interact with iPhone. A16 Bionic chip with 5-core GPU
  • Advanced dual-camera system. 48MP Main | Ultra Wide. Super-high-resolution photos (24MP and 48MP). Next-generation portraits with Focus and Depth Control. 4X optical zoom range
  • Emergency SOS via satellite. Crash Detection. Roadside Assistance via satellite
  • Up to 26 hours video playback. USB C, Supports USB 2. Face ID
  • Everyday use: Consider whether the phone supports the apps and features you rely on. For ordinary tasks, a chip-name comparison alone may not answer whether an upgrade is worthwhile.
  • Heavy or sustained workloads: If you play demanding games, edit video, or run other intensive tasks, seek independent benchmarks that measure comparable work and sustained performance across the specific models. The available specifications do not establish benchmark results.

Make the decision by priority

  1. Write down your must-haves. Examples include ultra-wide framing, optical telephoto reach, macro photos, advanced video formats, or a particular storage capacity.
  2. Remove models that miss those needs. Compare camera and video capabilities in the official specifications rather than assuming that more megapixels or a newer generation settles the question.
  3. Compare battery evidence consistently. Use the same playback category for manufacturer figures, or the same independent test method for measured results.
  4. Match performance evidence to your workload. For intensive use, compare independent results for the tasks you care about instead of inferring speed from chip names.
  5. Check the actual purchase options. Compare local price, size, storage, condition, and availability for the exact model and seller you are considering.

For example, Apple’s specifications make iPhone 17 a concrete model to include when comparing current camera and chip capabilities. It is not a universal winner: a buyer who needs ProRes or ProRes RAW video may weigh the iPhone 17 Pro’s listed formats differently, while another buyer may find those options irrelevant. Confirm price and stock for the exact configuration in your market.

Check charging claims against the stated setup

Apple says iPhone 17 can charge up to 50% in 20 minutes when used with a 40W-or-higher power adapter and a USB-C cable; the adapter is sold separately (Apple’s iPhone 17 specifications). This is a stated charging condition, not a reason every buyer needs to purchase another adapter. Check whether you already have a suitable adapter and cable before adding one to your costs.
