To compare Google Search results for India and the United States, search the same query under each intended country or region setting, hold other conditions as steady as possible, and record the settings and capture time with each screenshot. Do not rely on google.com versus google.co.in alone: Google’s country-code domains are being redirected to google.com, and the address bar does not by itself establish which country’s Search service produced the results.

Set up a fair India–US comparison

  1. Choose the question you want to answer. To isolate geographic differences, keep the query wording and language the same. If you also want to compare the broader experience of users searching in different languages, change language settings deliberately and label that as a separate comparison.
  2. Set and check the country or region. Use Google Search settings to choose the intended region or country service. Check the country service indicated on the results page and record your selection. Google’s settings and country-service controls are the meaningful controls—not the domain in the address bar alone. Google explains that result language is influenced by multiple signals; its 2017 explanation of local results said location was the default basis for the country service and that users could select another in settings.
  3. Make language choices explicit. Record the result-language filter, Google display language, and browser or device language if known. Display language can help Google choose results, but it does not filter every result. Google’s result-language controls primarily affect web results and may not apply to some features or pages whose language it cannot identify. Google’s language guidance describes the factors it considers.
  4. Keep other context comparable. Use the same query, viewport or device type, browser, and comparable scroll position. Where practical, use the same account and customization state; note whether you were signed in. Record the date, time, and time zone because results are a capture-time observation, not a permanent country-specific ranking.
  5. Capture both pages and label them. Save each screenshot with its query, region/country service, language settings, account context, timestamp, time zone, and viewport. This makes the comparison auditable instead of leaving you to infer settings from an image later.

Why Google’s domain is not a country selector

Google said in 2017 that the country service would correspond to a user’s location by default and that Search settings were the way to choose a different country service. The active service could be seen at the bottom of the results page. In April 2025, Google announced a gradual redirection of country-code domains to google.com, explaining that it had provided local results regardless of whether a person used google.com or a country domain since 2017. Google’s 2025 update is why google.co.in versus google.com should not be your only comparison method.

In the 2017 explanation, Google Product Manager Evelyn Kao wrote: “Typing the relevant ccTLD in your browser will no longer bring you to the various country services—this preference should be managed directly in settings.” The practical check is the selected region and visible country service, not a country-coded URL.

What to compare in the screenshots

Compare observations, not presumed causes. A screenshot shows what appeared for a particular query and capture context at a particular time; by itself, it does not establish a universal ranking or prove that country caused a difference.

  • Localization: check for country-specific URL variants, language versions, currency, or other visible regional cues.
  • Search context: retain the country service, language cues, timestamp, and viewport alongside the images.

Google’s documentation says it uses signals including country-code domains, hreflang, server location, local addresses and phone numbers, language, currency, and links to infer a site’s intended audience. It describes geotargeting as inexact and recommends locale-specific URLs and hreflang for localized page variants. Those are signals about a site’s audience, not controls for setting the searcher’s country. See Google Search Central’s guide to multi-regional and multilingual sites.

A regional URL may also reflect what Google has crawled and indexed. Google notes that its default Googlebot IP addresses appear to be US-based and that Googlebot does not set an Accept-Language request header; it warns that locale-adaptive pages may not all be crawled or indexed. Google recommends separate locale URL configurations and hreflang annotations. See Google’s documentation on crawling locale-adaptive pages.

Automate repeatable captures

For a one-off check, capture the two configured results pages in the same browser and save the context with each file. For recurring comparisons, a screenshot API can make the viewport and capture process repeatable, but it does not itself prove that Google served a particular country’s results. Set and verify Google Search’s region and language context, and retain the country-service indication and timestamp in your comparison record.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a Google results URL with one GET request. Before capture, it accepts consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. It identifies bot checks/CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits in response headers, and those cases are not billed. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Plans include 1,000 screenshots per month free without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. These capture conveniences do not set Google’s search region or make a screenshot representative of every user in a country.

Limitations of the comparison

Google’s official sources do not establish that two screenshots represent every user in India or the United States, nor do they quantify how much results vary between captures. Google said in 2017 that around one in five searches was related to location; that is Google’s historical 2017 statement, not a current statistic about differences between India and US results. Treat your images as dated evidence for the recorded context, not as a universal ranking report.
