A convention may bundle many games and activities into one trip; a local event may be closer or more focused. Some conventions also support gaming meetups that continue through the year.
Compare the event experience, not the label
Start by identifying what you want to do. A convention can combine open gaming, a game library, scheduled sessions, tournaments, workshops, and an exhibit hall. A local event might instead focus on a particular game, casual play, or a BYOC (bring your own computer) LAN. The word “local” does not tell you whether an event is a small meetup or a seat-limited LAN, and “convention” does not guarantee that a particular activity will be available when you attend.
For example, the Origins Game Fair 2026 attendee guide describes a multi-level event with a library and open gaming alongside scheduled activities, tournaments, workshops, and exhibits. Akron LANFest’s 2026 guide describes a different format: a BYOC LAN with limited reserved seats and specific equipment expectations. These are examples, not rules for every convention or local event.
Use these eight factors to compare candidates
1. Format and scale
Determine whether the event is a multi-day convention, a store or community meetup, a tournament, or a LAN. Consider how much of the event you will actually use: a large venue and broad program may suit someone who wants to move among activities, while a focused gathering may be a better match for a single game or group.

2. Games and programming
Check which genres and activities are on the program, and distinguish casual options from scheduled or competitive ones. LUG Con’s official attendee page describes board games, miniatures, role-playing games, and trading-card games, with activities ranging from casual learn-to-plays to tournaments. Look for the specific games, demos, exhibits, and workshops that matter to you rather than assuming the event’s headline genre covers the whole schedule.
3. Full cost
Estimate the cost of attending, not just the badge or seat price. Include admission, separately priced activities, transport, lodging, meals, equipment rental, and optional purchases. Origins notes that some scheduled events require an additional fee. A LAN may charge separately for a reserved BYOC seat or add-ons; check the organizer’s current checkout terms. Ticket tiers and deadlines can change: Game Con Junction’s page showed an early-bird period that ended October 5, 2026, so those rates should not be treated as currently available.

4. Schedule and capacity
Find out when activities run, where they take place, how many people can participate, and whether registration is required. Origins says its schedule listings include time, location, player count, and a description; some events have limited seating or require advance registration. A broad schedule is useful only if the sessions you want still have space and fit your visit.
5. Travel and venue logistics
Compare door-to-door travel, parking or transit, nearby food, lodging, and how much walking the venue involves. Origins’ gaming spaces span multiple floors and connected buildings, while LUG Con’s attendee information includes venue and area travel and food details. Check the specific venue plan rather than assuming a convention center, hotel, or community space will be easy to navigate.

6. Equipment
Confirm what the organizer supplies and what you must bring. Akron LANFest’s BYOC guidance asks attendees to bring a computer or console, monitor, network cable, peripherals, and power strip, subject to event rules. That list is specific to its LAN format; do not assume those requirements apply to a convention or local tabletop meetup.
7. Accessibility and comfort
Look for official information about physical access, restrooms, quiet spaces, crowding, noise, breaks, and assistance. Origins warns that its halls can be loud, crowded, and visually busy, and lists accessible facilities and two quiet spaces. Its guide also suggests optional comfort items such as noise-canceling headphones for managing sensory input. Treat that as venue-specific guidance, not a general requirement; check the access information for the event you plan to attend.

Consider whether you want a one-time destination event, an easy way to meet nearby players, or both. Game Con Junction says its badge supports free and reduced-cost community gaming events during the year, illustrating how a convention and local play can be connected rather than competing choices. Its page also describes youth-friendly programming; verify age guidance and activities with the organizer if attending with children.

Organizer figures describe individual events, not a reliable comparison of convention and local-event value. For example, Game Con Junction presents 800+ projected attendees for 2026, which is a projection rather than a final count. LUG Con reports 1,400+ attendees, 75+ vendors and sponsors, and 250+ events for its inaugural 2025 year. These figures can help convey an event’s stated scale, but they do not establish which kind of event offers a better experience.
Use this checklist before you commit
- Activities: Have you found specific games or sessions you want to attend, rather than relying on the event label?
- Cost: Have you added admission, separately priced events, travel, lodging, meals, equipment, and planned purchases?
- Schedule: Do the activities fit your arrival and departure times, and are registration or seats still available?
- Travel and venue: Do you know how to get there, where to eat, and how much walking or local travel to expect?
- Equipment: Have you checked the current rules for what is provided and what you must bring?
- Access and comfort: Have you reviewed venue access, quiet areas, crowd or noise guidance, and any assistance information you need?
- Community: Is the event welcoming to newcomers and suited to the age group or play style in your party?
Verify current details on the organizer’s pages
Dates, prices, ticket terms, schedules, seat availability, and venue arrangements can change. Before buying or traveling, check the event’s current official schedule, attendee guide, equipment and accessibility rules, and checkout terms. If a detail is not published, contact the organizer rather than assuming another event’s policy applies.
