1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor households in Great Britain, compare a fixed tariff with your current standard variable tariff (SVT) using your own annual electricity and gas use, the rates and standing charges for your region and payment method, and any contract fees. A fixed tariff holds agreed rates for its term; an SVT’s rates can change and are covered by Ofgem’s price cap. Neither option is always cheaper, and the cap does not limit your total bill.
What is the difference between a fixed tariff and a variable tariff?
This comparison applies to domestic energy customers in Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales. The rates and cap discussed here do not establish the rules for Northern Ireland or other countries.
A fixed tariff sets the unit rates and standing charges you pay for an agreed contract period. Your total bill can still change because it depends on how much energy you use. A fixed deal is not protected by future price-cap changes while its contract rates apply.
A standard variable tariff (SVT) has rates that can rise or fall. In Great Britain, the Ofgem price cap limits covered unit rates and daily standing charges for each cap period. Ofgem reviews the cap every three months; a published quarterly rate is not a forecast of costs for the year.

What does the Great Britain price cap cover?
For 1 October to 31 December 2026, Ofgem’s average Direct Debit cap figures across Great Britain are an illustrative £1,723 a year for a typical dual-fuel household. That annualized figure is based on average rates and typical use; it is not a limit on what a household can spend. As Ofgem explains, “It does not limit the cost of your total bill.” Ofgem’s explanation of the price cap describes the cap on rates and standing charges.
The average Direct Debit rates for that same quarter are:

| Fuel | Unit rate | Daily standing charge |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity | 26.32 pence per kWh | 54.83 pence per day |
| Gas | 7.97 pence per kWh | 29.68 pence per day |
These averages apply only to the stated quarter and payment method. Actual cap rates vary by region, fuel, payment method and meter type; use Ofgem’s regional information to find the relevant figures. Ofgem’s price-cap rates provides the rate tables.
Ofgem said the cap for a typical dual-fuel Direct Debit household rose 4% from the preceding period. Its rate table also reflects a VAT change: electricity has no VAT from 1 October 2026 through 31 March 2027, while gas includes 5% VAT. Ofgem cautions that costs cannot be compared directly with earlier periods because of this change. Ofgem’s August 2026 announcement gives the period and change context.

How do I compare standing charges and unit rates?
- Find your annual use. Get the last 12 months of electricity and gas consumption in kWh from your bills or supplier account. If you do not have actual usage, use an estimate and treat the resulting cost as an estimate too.
- Record the full terms of each offer. Note electricity and gas unit rates, daily standing charges, payment method, meter requirements, contract end date and exit fees. Check whether the rates are fixed for the whole term and what tariff applies when it ends.
- Calculate estimated annual costs on identical usage. For each fuel, use: (annual kWh × unit rate) + (365 × daily standing charge). Add fees or discounts only when the offer’s terms explain how they apply. Add the two fuel estimates if the offer covers both.
- Compare with your current SVT, not a generic headline. Use the price-cap rates for your region, payment method and meter. Compare offers for the same location and payment arrangement so the figures are like for like.
- Separate price from certainty. A fixed tariff offers stable agreed rates during its term, but may have exit fees and could look less attractive if market rates fall. An SVT avoids a fixed-term commitment, but rates can rise or fall as the cap changes.
- Check the exit and end-of-term terms. Include any exit fee in your decision and find out what happens when a fixed contract expires. Do not assume that a new fixed deal or the same rates will apply automatically.
Should I fix my energy tariff or stay on the price cap?
There is no reliable universal answer without your consumption and the live tariff offers available to you. A fixed offer needs to compare favorably after both fuels’ standing charges and any applicable fees are counted. You also need to decide whether the certainty is worth the contract duration and exit terms.
Volatility cuts both ways. If prices fall after you fix, you may be paying more than a newly available tariff; if prices rise, your agreed rates may provide stability for the rest of the term. The evidence here does not predict which option will be cheaper over a future contract.

Ofgem’s January 2026 State of the Market report provides historical context, not a current quote: it reported that the cheapest tariff was approximately £265 below the cap as of October 2025, and that around one-third of customers were on fixed-term tariffs by July 2025. Those observations show why checking available deals can matter, but do not establish today’s price gap or deal availability. Ofgem’s State of the Market report covers those observations.
