Compare plans using your likely total bill—not just the advertised price per kilowatt-hour. Add the cost of electricity you expect to use to the standing charge, then weigh that estimate against the contract’s rate-change rules, fees and flexibility. Whether a fixed or variable plan suits you depends on your location, usage and tolerance for price changes; neither is always cheaper.

How to compare electricity tariffs

  1. Gather your usage details. Use recent bills or, ideally, a full year of usage. Record your annual kilowatt-hours (kWh), postcode or region, payment method, meter type and any meaningful peak or off-peak usage.
  2. Calculate the likely cost for each offer. Multiply the unit rate by the kWh you expect to use, then add the daily standing charge multiplied by the number of days in the billing period. The standing charge applies even on days when you use no electricity. See Ofgem’s explanation of standing charges and Citizens Advice’s tariff guidance.
  3. Model time-of-use rates by time band. If rates differ by time of day, estimate how much electricity you would use in each band and apply that band’s rate. Check the exact cheaper-rate hours, meter requirements and whether your routine lets you shift enough consumption to those hours.
  4. Compare like with like. Check each estimate against your current plan and a local benchmark if one exists. A supplier’s comparison estimate may use assumed usage that does not reflect your household’s pattern.
  5. Read the terms behind the price. Check the contract length; which rates or charges are fixed; how and when variable rates can change; exit fees; discounts and their conditions; meter and payment requirements; and what happens when the contract ends.
  6. Verify before switching. Use an official or regulator-endorsed comparison service where available, then confirm the actual tariff terms with the supplier. Local protections and switching rules vary.

For a simple tariff, a useful estimate is: (unit rate × expected kWh) + (daily standing charge × days). Use consistent units and the same billing period for every offer. For multi-rate plans, calculate each rate band separately before adding the standing charge.

What fixed and variable rates mean

Fixed tariffs

A fixed tariff holds the agreed rates for its contract term. Check the contract to confirm exactly what is fixed: a fixed term does not necessarily mean every bill component is fixed. Rate certainty can make costs more predictable, but it does not guarantee a lower bill. If market prices fall, a customer on a fixed rate may pay more than someone on a variable tariff. Citizens Advice explains the distinction and the trade-off in its guide to choosing an energy tariff.

Variable tariffs

Variable rates can change according to market prices and the rules that apply in your location. This leaves you exposed to increases, but can also let you benefit if rates fall. “Variable” does not describe just one kind of plan: a standard variable tariff, a tracker linked to wholesale prices and a dynamic time-of-use tariff can have different rate-change schedules and protections. Check the specific contract rather than relying on the label.

  • Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure

Time-of-use tariffs

These tariffs charge different rates at different times. They may suit households that can move substantial use to cheaper periods—for example, overnight electric-vehicle charging or storage heating—but the saving depends on actual use and the tariff’s conditions. Some plans usually require a smart meter; confirm meter eligibility and the precise low-rate hours before comparing. Citizens Advice’s England guidance covers time-of-use and tracker tariffs.

How standing charges affect the comparison

The standing charge is a daily cost separate from the price of each kWh. Multiply it by the days in the period you are comparing and add it to the usage charge. A plan with a lower unit rate can still cost more overall if it has a higher standing charge, particularly for a household with lower consumption. Compare both charges using your own expected usage, rather than choosing by either headline figure alone.

What the Great Britain price cap does—and does not do

In Great Britain, Ofgem’s price cap applies to standard variable tariffs. It limits the maximum unit rate and standing charge, not a household’s total bill; the bill still depends on usage. The cap does not protect fixed tariffs, and rates vary by region and payment method. Check Ofgem’s current cap explanation and regional unit rates and standing charges for the applicable period.

For context, Ofgem’s average price-cap illustration for direct-debit customers in England, Scotland and Wales is £1,723 per year for 1 October–31 December 2026. For the same period, its average direct-debit cap figures are 26.32 pence/kWh for electricity and 54.83 pence per day for the standing charge. These are period-specific averages, not quotes or limits on an individual household’s bill; actual rates vary by region and payment method. Ofgem notes the displayed rates are rounded and that an electricity VAT change applies over this period, so these figures should not be compared directly with earlier periods without accounting for that change.

Check local rules and comparison services

Tariff names, protections and switching options depend on where you live. Do not assume the Great Britain price cap or advice written for England applies in another country or jurisdiction.

  • Great Britain: Ofgem explains the price cap and the rates it covers. In England, Citizens Advice provides consumer guidance on tariff types; its page is specifically for England.
  • Australia: The ACCC describes the Default Market Offer comparison benchmark and the free Energy Made Easy and Victorian Energy Compare services. Its main explanatory material covers New South Wales, south-east Queensland and South Australia, with separate Victorian guidance. Confirm your state or territory and which service applies using the ACCC electricity prices and plans guidance.
  • European Union: The European Commission points consumers toward checking price type, contract duration, cancellation terms, exit fees, cooling-off rights and national comparison tools. Specific rules and services are national; consult the relevant country’s guidance and the Commission’s information on signing a new energy contract.

Before you commit to a tariff

Confirm the contract’s exit fee and switching conditions. In Great Britain, Ofgem says an early exit fee may apply if you leave a fixed tariff before it ends, and its switching guidance describes a 14-day cancellation period for a switch. These rules may differ elsewhere; check the applicable terms and local guidance in Ofgem’s switching advice.

With those details, compare estimated costs and the contract conditions side by side, then decide whether predictable rates or flexibility better fits your household.
