When comparing electric guitars, assess three things separately: how the specific instrument feels and plays, whether its pickups and controls suit your sound, and whether its hardware fits your tuning and playing habits. Confirm the exact model and production year, then play the guitar if possible: a spec sheet can identify components, but it cannot tell you how that individual instrument feels or whether its setup is right for you.
What should I look for when comparing electric guitars?
Use the same tests on every guitar you consider. First check fit and playability, then compare pickups and controls through the same amp settings, and finally assess the nut, tuners, and bridge for the way you play. Keep the model name, production year, and configuration alongside your notes; guitars sold under one series name can differ by year or version.
Side-by-side checklist
| Comparison area | What to compare | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Fit and playability | Neck profile, fretboard radius, body balance, and access to upper frets | Play seated and standing; try chords, bends, and notes across the fingerboard. |
| Workmanship | Fret ends and levelness, finish, neck-to-body assembly, controls, and output jack | Inspect the actual guitar, operate the controls, and listen for rattles or abnormal buzzing. |
| Setup | Neck relief, string height, pickup height, and intonation | Separate adjustable setup issues from underlying defects; treat manufacturer figures as starting points. |
| Pickups and electronics | Pickup type and position, voicing, output, switching, and control layout | Compare each position through the same amp and settings, using a consistent playing approach. |
| Hardware | Nut, tuners, bridge and saddles, and tremolo system if fitted | Check tuning operation and whether the bridge supports the tuning and techniques you use. |
| Exact specification | Model name, year, production series, and regional configuration | Check the current manufacturer specification or contact support with the instrument’s serial number. |
How do you judge build quality and playability?
Look beyond body-wood descriptions and construction labels. Check whether the neck feels comfortable in your hand, fret ends are smooth, notes ring clearly across the fingerboard, and hardware and controls feel secure. Play open chords, barre chords, bends, and notes at different positions. Listen for buzzing or dead notes, while recognizing that some noise may come from setup rather than poor construction.
Action and neck relief are adjustable, so a high or low string height alone does not establish whether a guitar is well or badly made. Fender’s setup guidance covers neck curvature (relief), string height, pickup height, control operation, and rattles or buzzing. Fender calls its figures “minimum specifications” intended as guidance, not hard-and-fast rules; the suitable setup also depends on playing style and attack. See Fender’s factory setup specifications.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Construction method is descriptive, not a quality ranking. PRS says its S2 scarf construction and manufacturing sequence are intended to produce a durable, comfortable, playable neck while using less raw material and enabling a more efficient process. That manufacturer explanation does not establish that one joint type or price tier is automatically better. Inspect and play the instrument you are considering. PRS explains its S2 and Bolt-on series.
Separate a setup issue from a build concern
- Often adjustable: action, neck relief, pickup height, and intonation may be changed during setup.
- Inspect closely: uneven or sharp fretwork, loose components, unreliable controls, persistent rattles, or notes that fail to ring clearly warrant closer attention.
- Test the instrument in context: a setup that feels comfortable to one player may not suit another player’s touch or preferred string height.
How should you compare pickups and electronics?
Compare pickup type, position, output and voicing, switching options, and control layout against the music you play and the amp or recording setup you use. A pickup converts string vibration into an electrical signal; the final sound also depends on the guitar’s other design choices, strings, playing technique, and signal chain. Yamaha describes single-coils as tending toward bright, crisp tones, but that is a general tendency rather than a guarantee. Yamaha’s guide to choosing an electric guitar explains the basic signal process and design factors.

Use a consistent listening test
- Use the same amp, settings, cable, and playing approach for each guitar.
- Play each pickup position with both chords and single notes; listen for the attack and output you want.
- Test the volume and tone controls through their usable range.
- Try any coil split or alternate switching, if present, and decide whether those sounds are useful to you.
- Notice noise as well as tone, especially at the gain level you normally use.
No pickup type is universally best. The practical question is whether the instrument’s available sounds and control layout work for your needs.
Which hardware details matter?
Check the nut, tuning machines, bridge, saddles, and any tremolo system as a working setup, not as a list of prestigious component names. Tuners should turn consistently; the strings should not bind in the nut slots as you tune; and the bridge should allow the setup and intonation you need. If you use a tremolo, consider whether you will use it and whether its setup and maintenance suit your habits. A fixed bridge and a tremolo system serve different preferences; neither is universally superior.

Published specifications can tell you what is fitted, but they do not prove long-term reliability. For example, Gibson’s Epiphone SG Standard page lists Grover Rotomatic tuners, a Graph Tech nut, a fully adjustable LockTone Tune-O-Matic bridge, and a Stop Bar tailpiece. Treat those as component details, not independent durability test results. See the Epiphone SG Standard specification page.

Names shared by a product series do not guarantee identical parts across years or configurations. PRS says S2 models produced beginning in 2024 use Maryland-made pickups and electronics; earlier S2 examples may have “S” pickups and SE electronics. PRS also notes that some parts are interchangeable and others are not, and that finishes and parts can vary by model and production year. Check the manufacturer’s current information or ask support about a specific instrument using its serial number. PRS’s guitar specification answers are updated September 3, 2026.

A model page is useful for reading a configuration, but it may describe a variant that is no longer sold. The Epiphone SG Standard page, for example, lists a set mahogany neck, laurel fingerboard, 22 medium-jumbo frets, ProBucker 2 neck and ProBucker 3 bridge pickups, Grover tuners, a Graph Tech nut, a Tune-O-Matic bridge, and a Stop Bar tailpiece. Its displayed Pelham Blue configuration is marked no longer available, so those details should not be taken as confirmation of current stock or of every SG Standard’s specification. Check the page’s listed configuration.
