To compare DLSS with native rendering fairly, capture the same scene at the same final output resolution, hold every other graphics setting constant, and align the images before inspecting them. Use matched video—not just stills—to judge flicker, ghosting, or detail stability in motion. There is no universal winner: results can vary with the game, its implementation, resolution, and settings.
What a fair DLSS-versus-native comparison requires
DLSS is a suite of neural rendering technologies powered by NVIDIA RTX Tensor Cores, according to NVIDIA. An RTX GPU is therefore the relevant hardware category for testing DLSS, but the technology description does not establish how a particular game or mode will look. NVIDIA says preferences can vary by game, resolution, and quality settings.
For a useful comparison, define the question first. A screenshot can help assess spatial detail and artifacts in one captured moment. It cannot alone establish how stable those details remain while the camera or objects move, nor can a single scene establish an overall winner.
- Spatial detail: fine geometry, texture detail, edges, and readable text.
- Artifacts: aliasing, shimmer, ghosting, softness, and unstable details.
- Temporal stability: whether details remain consistent during motion; compare matched video.
- Performance: frame rate or frame time, measured separately after finding reasonably comparable image-quality modes.
- Reproducibility: game build, settings, scene, capture path, and output dimensions.
Set up a repeatable game scene
Choose a scene you can reproduce
Use a built-in benchmark, a save point with a fixed camera position, or a route you can repeat. Keep the viewpoint and timing consistent. Avoid scenes where camera angle, animation state, weather, particles, or lighting changes between captures; those differences can be mistaken for rendering-mode effects.

Record and lock the test conditions
Before capturing, write down the game version or build, display and output resolution, graphics preset, ray tracing setting, anti-aliasing, sharpening, field of view, and any driver-level overrides. Keep these unchanged and change only the rendering mode under test. If you compare several modes, repeat the same scene and capture procedure for each one.
Match final output resolution and image quality
Both conditions should produce the same final output resolution. Do not assume that DLSS and native options with similar labels deliver equivalent image quality. NVIDIA advises using ICAT to identify the most comparable image-quality modes before comparing performance; its guidance also cautions that identical mode names do not guarantee equivalence. Capture and inspect the same frames
Capture stills for selected details
Pause at the same animation state when possible, then capture each mode. Compare the full frame first to understand the overall scene. Next inspect identical crops at identical magnification. Thin geometry, fine foliage, fences, text, moving edges, and distant detail can make useful inspection areas. Note what is actually visible—such as softness, aliasing, ghosting, shimmer, or reconstruction artifacts—without treating one frame as proof of a general result.
Use video for motion behavior
For flicker, ghosting, or detail stability, record the same repeatable sequence in each condition. Stills isolate a chosen instant; video better represents moving gameplay and can reveal temporal changes that a still conceals. NVIDIA’s ICAT guidance recognizes both screenshot and video comparisons, while noting that video analysis takes more time.

Align before judging
Put images side by side or use a slider, and synchronize video before comparing. Match visible scene features spatially and, for video, temporally. NVIDIA ICAT supports up to four screenshots or videos with slider, side-by-side, and zoomed inspection views. Check current availability and behavior in NVIDIA’s ICAT guidance; the cited article dates from the DLSS 2.3 and Image Scaling era.
Verify the screenshot contains the intended output
Check the saved file’s dimensions and confirm that it contains the final output image, not an intermediate render. NVIDIA specifically warns that GPU-level NVIDIA Image Scaling may need driver-level capture support: unsupported software capture can record the lower, pre-upscaled resolution. Report the comparison so someone else can repeat it
Include the exact game and build, settings, output resolution, rendering mode, capture method, and scene or route. State whether the evidence is a still or a matched video, and separate visible image-quality observations from performance measurements. NVIDIA’s own explanation of DLSS capabilities is vendor-authored technology information, not independent proof that one mode wins; no universal quality or performance figure follows from the guidance.
