Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo compare cloud bandwidth for a 24/7 YouTube stream, first find the encoder bitrate YouTube recommends for your codec, resolution, and frame rate. Then check whether the exact VM or managed service can sustain that outbound rate on its actual route to YouTube—not merely whether its advertised maximum is higher. Also compare per-flow limits, burst behavior, network headroom, continuity rules, and data-transfer billing. These are separate checks: throughput is a rate; transfer billing counts accumulated data.
Start with the stream’s required bitrate
YouTube’s recommended live bitrate depends on the video codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use its current live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance rather than relying on a generic cloud-bandwidth target: the page can change, and the right value depends on your settings. YouTube currently recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 video at 1080p, 30 fps, and 17 Mbps at 1080p, 60 fps. These are recommended video bitrates, not total network usage.
YouTube recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate (CBR) for encoder settings. Allow some headroom above the selected video bitrate for audio, protocol overhead, and other traffic; do not treat a VM rate equal to the video bitrate as a comfortable sustained target. YouTube also advises testing under representative conditions and monitoring stream health.
For example, a 1080p30 H.264 stream uses a 14 Mbps recommended video target. That is far below a multi-gigabit headline VM maximum, but the comparison is meaningful only if the provider’s figure applies to sustained outbound traffic on the selected VM and path.

Compare the limits that determine real outbound capacity
Provider specifications describe different things. Check the exact VM size, region, network route, and service configuration, then distinguish a published maximum or expected rate from a demonstrated sustained rate.
| What to compare | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Outbound capacity | The documented egress rate for the specific VM size and region, including the destination route. | A VM’s published figure may be a maximum or expected rate, not a guarantee of uninterrupted throughput. |
| Single-flow limit | Whether one connection from your encoder to YouTube can use the advertised VM bandwidth. | A nominal VM ceiling can be higher than a per-flow limit. The encoder contribution usually depends on its own flow. |
| Baseline and burst | The baseline rate, credit mechanism, and permitted burst duration, if applicable. | A stream that runs for a day cannot depend on temporary burst capacity. |
| Network and workload headroom | Packet-processing capacity, CPU load, routing, congestion, and observed stream health. | The effective rate depends on more than a provider’s bandwidth line item. |
| Continuity behavior | Service lifecycle, restart rules, maintenance behavior, quotas, and recovery options. | Bandwidth alone does not establish that a channel can remain active continuously. |
| Transfer billing | Current data-transfer terms for the service, region, and account. | Throughput capacity and accumulated outbound data are billed or limited differently. |
Google Cloud Compute Engine
Compute Engine egress depends on machine type and destination routing. Google documents a maximum external egress rate per unique 5-tuple flow of 3 Gbps for most machine series, with H3 and H4D documented at 1 Gbps per flow. That is not the whole limit: overall external egress caps and project-level internet-egress quotas can also apply. Check the current documentation for the exact VM and project rather than treating the per-flow maximum as a guaranteed rate. See Compute Engine network bandwidth.

Amazon EC2
EC2 network bandwidth varies by instance type and other factors, and AWS documents constraints involving destination paths and single versus multiple flows. Many instance sizes with 16 or fewer vCPUs have baseline bandwidth and can use network I/O credits to burst for a limited time—typically 5 to 60 minutes depending on instance size. For a continuous stream, compare the applicable baseline and external-path limits, not just an “up to” figure. Start with Amazon EC2 instance network bandwidth and the selected instance’s details.
Microsoft Azure
Azure describes allocated VM network bandwidth in terms of outbound traffic and aggregates it across a VM’s network interfaces. VM-size tables give expected throughput, but Microsoft cautions that upper limits are guidance and actual results vary with congestion, workload, and configuration. Accelerated networking may help a VM reach its allocation; it does not raise that allocation. Compare the selected size in Azure VM network throughput and its applicable VM size documentation. As one family-specific example, the Dasv4 table lists 2,000 Mbps expected network bandwidth for Standard_D2as_v4 and 40,000 Mbps for Standard_D96as_v4; those examples are not guarantees and should not be generalized to other sizes.

Check what “24/7” means for the service
Continuous operation is a service-lifecycle question as well as a bandwidth question. For example, Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation says a channel may be restarted after 24 hours in a streaming state other than stopped or stopping. This rule is specific to that managed API; it is not a general limit on Compute Engine VMs or YouTube. Verify the lifecycle rules for the exact service you plan to use in Google Cloud Live Stream API documentation.
Also decide what the cloud service is doing. A VM sending one contribution stream to YouTube is not the same architecture as a cloud system that encodes a channel and delivers it directly to viewers. In the ordinary ingest workflow, YouTube handles delivery to its viewers; if you build a separate viewer-delivery architecture, that adds a different workload. AWS describes one such managed architecture using MediaLive, MediaPackage, and CloudFront in its Live Streaming on AWS overview.

Estimate transfer volume separately from capacity
A rate can help estimate how much data a continuous stream sends, but it is not a price. For decimal gigabytes, bitrate in Mbps multiplied by 0.45 gives an approximate daily video volume before protocol overhead. At 14 Mbps, that is about 6.3 GB per day. Actual billed transfer can differ because of overhead, audio and ancillary traffic, and each provider’s accounting rules.
Look up current outbound-data pricing for the chosen provider, service, region, and account, and check any quotas or included allowances that apply. A bandwidth specification alone does not establish an egress bill; do not multiply a VM’s peak rate by time and mistake the result for your stream’s usage.

Validate the exact configuration before relying on it
- Set the encoder target. Choose codec, resolution, frame rate, and the current YouTube-recommended bitrate. Configure RTMPS and CBR where supported.
- Identify the actual cloud limit. Record the VM size, region, internet route, baseline or expected rate, per-flow restrictions, relevant quota, and any burst policy.
- Reserve headroom. Leave room above the video bitrate for audio, overhead, monitoring traffic, and variation. Do not design around a temporary peak.
- Run a representative preflight. Send a test stream from the intended environment with the intended settings and network route. YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Treat the test as evidence about that configuration, not a universal promise about future performance.
- Monitor during operation. Watch YouTube stream health and the cloud provider’s network, CPU, and quota metrics. Investigate dropped frames, bitrate instability, packet loss, or a rise in resource use before treating the setup as dependable.
- Recheck continuity and billing. Confirm restart and maintenance behavior for the exact service, and verify data-transfer charges and quotas in the current account terms.
Common comparison mistakes and fixes
- Comparing Mbps to a monthly data allowance: Mbps is a transfer rate; GB or TB measures accumulated data. Compare capacity to the stream bitrate, and estimate usage separately.
- Relying on an “up to” number: It may describe a ceiling, expected throughput, or a burst rather than a steady rate. Find baseline and flow-specific constraints, then validate under representative conditions.
- Ignoring the single connection: A VM-wide figure does not automatically mean one encoder flow can reach it. Check the provider’s per-flow terms and test the actual route.
- Planning around credits: A burst can mask insufficient baseline capacity in a short test. Select a configuration whose sustainable behavior suits a continuous stream.
- Using a network figure as an egress quote: Bandwidth documentation does not tell you the current cost of transfer. Price the exact region and service using current provider terms.
- Applying one service’s restart rule to everything: The 24-hour behavior documented for Google Cloud Live Stream API does not establish a limit on VMs or YouTube. Check the lifecycle rules of the selected product.
