Compare budget phones as ownership choices, not just by sticker price: match models by market, purchase date, condition, and storage; estimate costs over the same number of years; assess performance for the tasks you actually do; and check the remaining software support for each exact model.
Set up a fair comparison
Before comparing models, write down the country where you will buy, the purchase date, whether you are considering a new or refurbished phone, the storage tier, and how long you expect to keep it. Prices and availability vary by market and over time, so compare listings from the same market and date where possible. This comparison method does not establish live prices.
Match storage configurations. A low price for a smaller-capacity model is not directly comparable to a higher-capacity version unless you account for the difference. For used and refurbished phones, record the exact listing and its condition rather than assuming that all units of a model are alike.
Estimate the cost over your intended ownership period
Use one period for every phone, such as the number of years you realistically expect to keep it. Add the purchase price to other costs you expect to incur during that period: for example, a required change in plan, a charger if one is not included, or a repair supported by a model-specific estimate. Do not assign a universal repair cost or probability without evidence for the specific phone and circumstances.

If an annualized comparison is useful, divide that total by the intended years of use. Keep the inputs visible so you can adjust them: a device with the lower upfront price may cost more per year if you replace it sooner. This calculation is an estimate based on your assumptions, not a prediction of what every owner will spend.
Judge performance against your own workload
Start with the tasks you care about. Messaging and browsing, camera processing, multitasking, and sustained gaming make different demands of a phone. Compare independent measurements made under comparable conditions, or clearly disclosed hands-on results that test the same workload. A benchmark score or test of one kind of task does not automatically predict performance in another.

No comparative benchmark results or phone tests are established here, so there is no evidence in this comparison to declare one model faster. When you evaluate particular phones, check that the test uses the same method and conditions for each one, and consider whether its workload resembles yours.
Check the software support that remains for the exact model
Look up the manufacturer’s policy for the exact model, then distinguish operating-system upgrades from security updates. A maximum advertised support period is not the same as the time remaining when you buy: find the policy’s start date and compare the remaining period at your planned purchase date. Policies can differ by model and change over time.

- Google Pixel: Google’s support page lists five years of updates, counted from the device’s availability on the US Google Store, for the Pixel 6a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7a, Pixel 7, Pixel 7 Pro, and Pixel Fold group. Confirm the exact phone’s current entry at Google’s Pixel update schedule.
- Samsung Galaxy A17 5G: Samsung’s regional product page states six OS upgrades and six years of security support, subject to change. This policy should not be assumed for every Galaxy A phone or market. See the Galaxy A17 5G regional product page.
- Samsung Galaxy A27 5G: In a June 25, 2026 announcement, Samsung Electronics said the model would receive up to six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades, plus six years of security updates. This is an announced policy and may vary by market. See Samsung’s Galaxy A27 5G announcement.
These examples describe different models and policy wording; they are not a complete, directly comparable ranking of every budget phone. Check the current, model-specific terms before buying, especially if you expect to keep the phone for several years.
Account for battery, repairs, and refurbished condition
Find local repair options and request an estimate for the exact model. A manufacturer program can have eligibility rules, location limits, and deadlines, so do not treat one program as a general repair price or guarantee.

For a used or refurbished unit, check battery health, physical condition, warranty, repair access, and remaining software support for that specific device and listing. Google says its certified refurbished Pixel offer uses genuine OEM screen or battery parts when those parts need replacement during refurbishment, and that refurbished buyers receive the same update commitment as new Pixel owners. Put the same inputs beside each phone: matched price and storage, estimated cost over your intended ownership period, results for comparable workloads, and remaining OS and security support. Add condition, warranty, and a model-specific repair estimate when considering used or refurbished devices. A longer update policy does not, by itself, prove better performance or a lower repair bill; decide which factors matter most for your use and budget.
