Compare Windows on Arm laptops using the same workloads, display brightness measured in nits, power settings, wireless conditions and software state—not manufacturers’ maximum-hour claims. Test browsing, video playback and mixed productivity separately, repeat each test and publish the setup. A battery-life result describes the conditions under which it was measured; it is not a universal forecast of a typical day.
Start with the workload you want to compare
There is no single battery test that represents every use case. A laptop may last longer during a local video loop than during a workday with active browsing, office apps and frequent network activity. Compare results only when the workloads are alike, and keep unlike scenarios in separate groups.
- Web browsing: Use the same pages, tabs, navigation pattern and timing. Specify whether pages are refreshed or left idle, since a static set of open tabs is not equivalent to active browsing.
- Local video: Use the same file, resolution, frame rate, player and playback settings. A video loop is a controlled scenario, not a substitute for a productivity-day test.
- Mixed productivity: Define the apps and activity pattern—for example, document editing, browsing and periodic calls—so readers can understand what the test actually represents.
- Standby: Treat sleep or standby runtime as a separate scenario from screen-on use.
Microsoft’s Surface battery testing and estimated performance page illustrates why the workload matters: it describes separate browsing and video methods rather than treating them as interchangeable.
Standardize the screen and power settings
Match screen luminance by measurement, not by setting every brightness slider to the same percentage. Slider scales and panels differ. Microsoft’s energy-efficiency guidance recommends testing at 150–200 nits depending on form factor, and suggests measuring a white desktop at the center of the screen. A luminance meter can help; it is useful for repeatability but not required to understand the comparison.

Record the rest of the display setup as well. Auto or adaptive brightness, content-adaptive brightness, HDR, resolution, panel type and refresh rate can all affect energy use. Choose settings that fit the comparison and hold them constant across devices. Microsoft’s device-under-test setup guidance warns that small differences in brightness method and refresh rate can materially change results.
Also align Windows power mode, screen timeout, battery-saver behavior and audio level. If the goal is to compare laptops as shipped, keep their default policies but disclose them; if the goal is to isolate hardware under a common policy, set the same mode and timeouts on each.

Control the rest of the test conditions
Small differences outside the screen can skew runtime. Keep Wi-Fi connected to comparable network conditions, and disclose Bluetooth or cellular-radio use, peripherals and audio. Use the same starting-battery procedure, and avoid letting one machine install updates or run unrelated background applications during its test while another does not.
Microsoft’s device setup guidance identifies brightness method, refresh rate, network state and background updates as variables that can materially affect results. For reproducibility, record the following:

- Laptop sitting too low on your desk: Raise it to eye level on a gas spring arm that adjusts from 9 to 18.75 inches and holds where you leave it. A hex key sets the tension, turning one way for heavier laptops and the other for lighter ones.
- Covered for as long as you own it: Mount-It! backs this laptop arm with a lifetime manufacturer warranty and US-based product specialists, available during standard business hours. If setup, tension, or fit raises a question, a product specialist can help.
- Fits laptops up to 17 inches and 13.2 lbs: Side holders open from 9.5 to 16.5 inches wide, and locking buckles, traction pads, and tabs keep the laptop from slipping. The 11.75 x 11 inch tray is ventilated so warm air escapes beneath. Check your laptop's width and weight first.
- Full motion for every working position: A 360 degree swivel, 90 degree tilt, and reach from 10.5 to 23.5 inches let you pull the screen close, push it back, or angle it toward a video call, then reposition it between sitting and standing.
- Screen up high, keyboard and mouse below: This laptop stand arm is a raised screen, not a typing surface, so pair it with an external keyboard and mouse. It clamps to the desk edge instead of a riser taking up space, and cable clips route cords along it.
- Laptop model and exact configuration, including processor, memory, storage and display.
- Battery design capacity and full-charge capacity, where available.
- Windows build, drivers, firmware and OEM software state where known.
- Workload, brightness measurement and display settings.
- Power policy, wireless state, peripherals, timeout settings and test environment.
- Number of runs, start and end charge, run-to-run variation, and whether runtime was observed to full discharge or extrapolated.
Repeat runs and report what happened
A single run can be affected by a background update or other transient activity. Repeat the same test under the same conditions, report the number of runs and show the spread rather than presenting only the best result. State whether the laptop ran to shutdown or whether the runtime was extrapolated from a partial discharge; those are not equally direct observations.
Include the test date and software context. A result from one configuration or Windows build should not be silently applied to every laptop sold under the same product-family name.

How to judge published battery-life results
Before deciding that one laptop lasts longer, check whether the reported numbers align on the factors below. A mismatch does not make a result useless; it means the figures may answer different questions.
| Comparison factor | What to align or disclose | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Workload | Same browsing routine, video file and playback, productivity activity, or standby scenario | Lighter or more static activity can yield a different runtime from active work. |
| Display | Measured luminance, adaptive brightness, HDR, resolution, refresh rate and panel type | Display settings and panels affect power use, and equal slider percentages do not guarantee equal brightness. |
| Wireless | Wi-Fi connection and network conditions; Bluetooth or cellular-radio state | Radio use and network activity change power consumption. |
| Power policy | Windows power mode, timeout policy and battery-saver behavior | Different policies can change device behavior on battery. |
| Software state | Windows build, drivers, OEM image, updates and background apps | Software and background activity can change energy use during a test. |
| Battery and configuration | Exact model, processor, memory, panel, battery capacity and firmware where known | Configurations within one product family may differ materially. |
| Test quality | Run count, variation, full-discharge observation or extrapolation, and ambient conditions | A repeated full run provides different evidence from a single or extrapolated result. |
For context, Microsoft’s Surface testing page describes model-specific Snapdragon configurations tested with local 1080p/24fps video playback and web browsing across multiple open tabs. The cited tests used full battery discharge, 150-nit brightness and Wi-Fi connected, and the page identifies configuration and test context. Those are manufacturer results for the named Surface configurations, not a ranking of all Windows Arm laptops.

Independent test protocols also vary. RTINGS describes laptop discharge testing in a 22°C room with ±0.5°C tolerance, native display resolution, the highest available refresh rate, 200 cd/m² brightness and Windows “Better battery” mode. These settings show what to look for in a methodology; a result using them is not directly comparable to another lab’s figure unless the workload and other conditions also align.
The available protocols do not establish a general battery-life advantage or penalty for emulated x86 applications versus native Arm applications. That effect would need product- and workload-specific testing.
Use Windows Battery Report to diagnose one laptop
Windows Battery Report is useful for examining an individual PC’s battery history and capacity, not as a standardized head-to-head benchmark. It does not normalize workload, screen luminance, wireless conditions or software state across two laptops.
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Run
powercfg /batteryreport. - Note the HTML file location printed by Windows and open the report.
- Review Installed battery, Recent usage and Battery usage to inspect the unit’s battery and usage history.
Microsoft’s Windows battery guidance describes generating the report and reviewing those sections. Its Modern Standby energy-efficiency guidance explains that power states and usage over a 72-hour period, capacity history over months and runtime estimates are based on the device’s own history. Treat those estimates as diagnostic context for that machine, not as a prediction that can be compared directly with another laptop’s report.
