The useful comparison includes the vehicle, its payloads and control systems, launch and recovery arrangements, and the support needed to keep it available.
Start with the mission, not the vehicle class
Write down what the navy needs the system to do, where it must operate, and what operational result would count as success. A vehicle suited to deep-ocean search may be a poor fit for shallow-water mine countermeasures, even if its published depth or endurance looks impressive.
Potential mission areas include surveillance and reconnaissance, seabed-infrastructure protection, logistics, anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, mine countermeasures, electronic warfare, and littoral operations. These are among the UUV-related capability areas identified in the UK Ministry of Defence’s AUKUS Pillar II fact sheet of 30 May 2026; they are not a claim that one vehicle performs all of them.
Define the operating conditions alongside the mission: water depth, distance from launch point, expected duration, sea conditions, seabed or water-column environment, access to communications, and whether the vehicle must work alone or alongside crewed ships and other uncrewed systems. These conditions determine which specifications matter and what must be demonstrated in trials.

What should a navy look for in an AUV?
Use a common requirement set for every candidate. Ask for evidence under comparable conditions, and record whether each figure is a requirement, a vendor-stated specification, a trial result, or an operationally demonstrated result.
Mission effectiveness and payload
Match the payload to the task: for example, a search sonar for seabed survey or a sensor suited to the specified surveillance requirement. Request payload mass and volume limits, power and data interfaces, and any constraints on fitting, changing, deploying, or recovering payloads. A payload’s nominal capability is not enough if its data cannot be used by the mission system or delivered in the required time.
Endurance and range
Ask how long the vehicle can operate and how far it can travel from launch and return, with the proposed payload and mission profile installed. Require the assumptions behind each number, including speed, operating pattern, reserve energy, environmental conditions, and whether the figure represents a one-way distance or a complete mission. “Range” and “endurance” are not interchangeable: a slow search pattern, transit speed, and time on station can produce very different mission outcomes.

Depth and navigation
Check both the stated operating-depth limit and the depth required for the mission. Underwater navigation also needs explicit treatment: ask how the system estimates position when it cannot rely on continuous satellite navigation, how it handles navigation error over the planned mission, and what accuracy is achieved in the relevant environment. A depth rating alone says little about whether the AUV can find, revisit, or accurately survey a target.
Autonomy, supervision, and recovery from faults
Establish which actions the AUV can take independently and which require an operator. The UK Defence and Security Accelerator’s 2019 Royal Navy competition document treated waypoint navigation, basic obstacle avoidance, remote tasking, retasking and abort, navigation, collision and damage avoidance, and situational awareness as areas to test. These are useful evaluation topics, not proof that a fielded system passed them.
For each function, ask what happens when conditions depart from plan: a blocked route, uncertain position, degraded sensor, low energy, lost communications, or a suspected fault. Specify safe behaviors, abort criteria, operator alerts, and how the vehicle is located and recovered after an abnormal mission.

Communications and signature
Clarify what data can be transmitted while submerged, what must wait until the vehicle surfaces or is recovered, and whether the mission permits exposure for communications. Also establish the acoustic-signature requirement and how it will be measured. The 2019 UK competition identified covert communications and low radiated acoustic signature as trial questions; it did not publish comparable performance results for competing systems.
Interoperability and integration
Ask whether third-party sensors and payloads can be integrated without dependence on a single developer, and whether data formats, mission planning, and control can connect to the navy’s systems. The UK competition called for open architecture and developer-agnostic third-party integration. The 30 May 2026 AUKUS fact sheet identifies shared standards, trilateral operational concepts, and common control systems as enablers for partner UUV capabilities. Those program aims indicate the importance of interoperability; they do not establish that every platform is already interoperable.

Compare the complete deployment chain: launch platform or shore facility, handling equipment, crew and training, mission-planning tools, recovery method, operating-base needs, and maintenance support. Require the supplier to identify what is included, what the navy must provide, and what limits deployment tempo. The 2019 UK competition requested operating-base and handling-system details, while the US Navy’s PEO Unmanned and Small Combatants describes responsibilities spanning acquisition, maintenance, fleet employment, and sustainment.

Maturity, availability, and lifecycle cost
Ask the provider to identify whether the offered configuration is a concept, demonstrator, prototype, or fielded system, and to support that label with dated evidence. Request acquisition, training, operation, maintenance, upgrade, and support costs over a stated period and at a stated fleet size. No consistent current public dataset in the cited material supports a like-for-like lifecycle-cost ranking or a standard maturity scale across named naval AUVs.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How do AUV range, endurance, payload, and depth compare?
Public figures illustrate why every number needs its context. The examples below come from different sources and describe different things; they are not a normalized comparison of competing vehicles.
| Figure | What it describes | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Three months of independent operation | Desired capability in the UK Defence and Security Accelerator’s 2019 Royal Navy autonomous test-system competition. | A competition target, not a verified result for an in-service AUV. |
| Up to 3,000 nautical miles | Example range for the future test system described in the same 2019 competition. | An illustrative desired capability, not demonstrated operational range. The document does not make this a general AUV benchmark. |
| More than 2 m³ and 2 metric tonnes of payload capacity | Desired capacity for the intended large test platform in the 2019 competition. | A requirement for that proposed test system, not a specification for a fielded model or a threshold for the AUV class. |
| 6,000 m search depth | US Naval Sea Systems Command SUPSALV’s description of the Hugin 54 AUV, known as Trondheim; publication date is not stated on the page. | A published capability for this named deep-ocean search system, not a comparative depth table for naval AUVs. |
| 4 cm × 4 cm stated sonar resolution; 300–600 m swath; 4–10 nm² daily coverage | SUPSALV’s description of Trondheim’s HiSAS 2030 synthetic-aperture-sonar configuration; publication date is not stated on the page. | Figures for the described sonar configuration. They should not be generalized to other vehicles or treated as results under unspecified, identical trial conditions. |
The Royal Australian Navy’s Maritime Autonomous Systems Unit announcement of 14 April 2026 names Ghost Shark XL-UUV, Bluebottle USV, and Speartooth LUUV as complementary systems the unit will operate. It also describes work in doctrine, experimentation, employment, training, test, and evaluation. The announcement supplies program context, not comparable performance specifications for those platforms; Bluebottle is identified as a USV, not an AUV.

Keep requirements separate from demonstrated results
A stated target can be useful for defining a procurement challenge, but it is not evidence that a system has achieved that target. The UK’s 2019 competition document is particularly useful as an evaluation framework because it sets out desired capabilities and trial areas. It is historical requirements material, not confirmation of current procurement status or fleet service.
Label every comparison entry by evidence type and date. For a trial result, include the tested configuration, payload, mission profile, conditions, and measurement method. For a supplier specification, record the source and assumptions. If the evidence is missing or non-comparable, say so rather than filling the gap with a score or an inferred ranking.
Build a procurement comparison that can be tested
- Define the mission outcome. State the task, environment, operating area, duration, and success criteria.
- Set threshold and objective requirements. Separate what every candidate must achieve from capabilities that would improve mission value.
- Request a configuration-specific data sheet. Tie range, endurance, depth, payload, navigation, and autonomy claims to the actual proposed vehicle and payload.
- Specify a common trial profile. Use equivalent mission conditions and define how operators, communications, safety, obstacle handling, and recovery will be assessed.
- Compare integration and deployment burden. Include interfaces, launch and recovery assets, personnel, training, operating-base needs, and fleet-system connections.
- Request lifecycle assumptions. Compare costs over the same period, fleet size, availability expectation, maintenance concept, and upgrade assumptions.
- Record evidence and uncertainty. Mark each item as a requirement, specification, test result, or operational evidence, and identify gaps that affect the mission decision.
This approach makes a comparison useful without implying that public specifications alone can settle procurement. A best-fit system depends on the mission and on evidence produced under conditions relevant to that mission.
