To tell whether a Prime Day deal is genuinely competitive, compare the exact same item, check its Amazon price history, then compare the final checkout cost and terms at other retailers. A large discount percentage or countdown timer is not enough to show that a price is unusually low—or the best offer available.
Is this Prime Day deal actually a good price?
Use three checks: confirm the listings are for the same product and condition, put the Amazon offer in the context of its recent price history, and compare it with current offers elsewhere. Then make the decision using the amount you would actually pay and the terms you would actually get.

There is no reliable event-wide discount percentage to apply to every Prime Day purchase. The value of a deal depends on the item, its normal pricing, competing offers, and any costs or restrictions attached to the offer.
How to compare Prime Day prices step by step
- Identify the exact item. Match the manufacturer model number or SKU, as well as size, color, storage or capacity, bundle, and condition. A similar product name or photo can hide a different generation, configuration, or package.
- Check Amazon’s price history. On eligible listings, Amazon provides price-history views from the product page; shoppers can also ask Alexa for Shopping. Amazon says the feature offers 30-, 90-, and 365-day views. In its 2026 description, Amazon reported availability in the US, UK, Canada, and India, with 365-day views still rolling out in the US, UK, and India. What appears can vary by market and listing, so check the actual product page rather than assuming every view is available.
- Look at the longer trend, not just the displayed reference price. If available, inspect several months of history and compare the deal with the item’s recent lows and typical prices. A short-lived “was” price or a reference price does not establish that today’s offer is the best recent price.
- Check other retailers for the same model. Search by manufacturer model number, then compare at least one or two credible retailers that carry that precise variant. Confirm the seller, condition, bundle, stock status, and delivery estimate; a marketplace listing is not necessarily equivalent to a retailer selling the item directly.
- Compare checkout totals and terms. Include any coupon, shipping, tax, required membership, or other mandatory charge. Check the return window and who handles returns. Where the final total is not visible until checkout, use that figure rather than the listing price.
- Decide against your own target price. If the deal is not near a price you consider worthwhile, or an equivalent offer elsewhere costs less overall, wait or buy from the better-fitting retailer. Amazon describes target-price alerts as a shopping feature that can help you avoid making a rushed decision because of a countdown.
What Amazon’s reference prices do—and do not—tell you
Amazon says deal savings can be based on a validated List Price or a Typical (also called Was) Price. Amazon describes List Price as a validated manufacturer’s suggested retail price or a price found at Amazon or another retailer. It describes Typical/Was Price as the median price customers paid on Amazon during the preceding 90 days, excluding limited-time deal prices. These are Amazon’s definitions; they are not proof that the deal is the lowest price at every retailer or the item’s lowest price in a longer period.
#1 Best Overall
- Amazon.com Gift Cards never expire and carry no fees.

- No returns and no refunds on Gift Cards.
Amazon’s Seller Central announcement describes further rules taking effect in 2026. It says List Price validation rules changed on April 23, 2026. It also says that from May 18, 2026, if more than half of days in the 90-day history are below the non-promotional median, Amazon calculates Typical Price using all sales, including promotional sales. The announcement says discounts not advertised to customers as promotions count as non-promotional sales. Those are Amazon rules for Amazon prices, not a standard for other retailers.
Amazon has also reported that customers saved more than $50 billion on deals and coupons worldwide during 2025. That is Amazon’s own company-reported figure, not an independent measure of Prime Day savings or evidence about any one product’s price.

Which details can change the better offer?
- Eligibility: Some offers require Prime or another membership. Include the cost of a membership you would need to buy, and do not treat a member-only price as available to everyone.
- Seller and fulfillment: Compare who sells the item and who ships it. A lower marketplace price may come from a different seller than the retailer’s own offer.
- Condition and bundle: New, refurbished, open-box, and used items are not like-for-like. Nor are bundles with different accessories or quantities.
- Delivery and availability: A lower price may not help if the item is unavailable or arrives too late for your needs.
- Returns: A shorter return period or a more difficult return process can change the practical value of a small price difference.
Can price trackers help?
Amazon’s own price-history feature and target-price alerts are first-party options. WIRED’s 2026 deal-hunting guide also discusses Keepa and CamelCamelCamel as Amazon price-history trackers. They can be useful places to investigate an item’s history or alerts, but tracker coverage and features may vary; verify what a service shows for the listing you are considering. A tracker’s history also does not replace checking live prices and checkout terms at other retailers.

A quick decision checklist
- Do the listings match on model, variant, bundle, and condition?
- Is the Amazon price near a worthwhile level in the history available for this listing?
- Is another retailer offering the exact item for less on comparable terms?
- Have you included coupons, shipping, tax, and any required membership in the total?
- Are seller, stock, delivery, and return terms acceptable?
