There is no universal AI “credit” unit: an API token charge, prepaid API balance, app subscription allowance, workspace credit, and cloud billing cap are different things. To estimate what a workload will cost, identify how you will access the model, then compare the exact model, input and output usage, processing mode, included allowances, and billing controls.
How much do AI models cost per token?
There is no single price for an AI model. API rates can vary by model and version, input tokens, output tokens, cached input, service mode, and—in some cases—processing region. A headline input rate alone cannot tell you the total bill.
OpenAI’s API pricing page separates input, cached input, and output rates and lists service-specific conditions. For eligible regional-processing endpoints, it states a 10% uplift for models released on or after March 5, 2026. Check the live OpenAI API pricing page for the exact model and endpoint you plan to use.

Anthropic’s list-price document dated May 27, 2026, for example, lists Claude Opus 4.8 on Google Vertex AI at $5.00 per 1 million input tokens and $25.00 per 1 million output tokens under its standard global tier; its batch figures are $2.50 and $12.50, respectively. That dated example is for Vertex AI, not a guaranteed current direct Anthropic API price. The same document includes regional and cache rates, so verify the applicable current price before budgeting. How do AI model credits work?
“Credits” describe different billing mechanisms, not a standardized amount of model usage. A credit may be a prepaid balance, a product-specific unit consumed by a feature, or an allowance included with a subscription. Some API routes instead bill measured usage, while cloud providers may apply billing-account tiers, caps, or credits.
The route matters as much as the model. OpenAI distinguishes personal ChatGPT flexible-use credits from API billing: its help page says, “These credits are not API credits.” Those personal credits apply after included usage on eligible features, and availability, purchase amounts, and limits can vary by account, region, and plan. Business, Enterprise, and Edu flexible pricing is another credit-based arrangement; its usage may depend on model, task complexity, input size, cached input, output length, automation, and mode. See OpenAI’s personal-plan credit details and the Business, Enterprise, and Edu rate card.

How do API credit and billing systems differ?
OpenAI: API rates versus ChatGPT credits
For API use, estimate costs from the model’s applicable rates and usage categories on the API pricing page. Do not assume a ChatGPT subscription or personal flexible-use credit balance pays for API calls. The ChatGPT and business-plan credit rules are product-specific, and account eligibility can vary.

Google documents Gemini API billing through billing-account-level tiers, rate limits, and caps. Prepay users need an active prepaid balance before eligible Google Cloud credits can be applied; eligible credits are consumed before the prepay balance. Google also says users who opened accounts after March 2, 2026 cannot use the referenced $300 welcome credit for Gemini API or AI Studio usage. Confirm current eligibility and controls in Google’s Gemini API billing documentation; these rules can depend on account and date.

Anthropic Claude API: prepaid credits or monthly invoicing
Anthropic documents prepaid credits for API and Playground use, including Claude Code, as well as monthly invoicing as a separate billing route. Purchased credits are available immediately, and auto-reload can be managed. Only successful API calls and completed tasks are charged; failed requests are not. Anthropic says purchased credits expire one year after purchase and are non-refundable. Those expiry and refund terms are Anthropic-specific; do not apply them to another provider. See Anthropic’s payment and credit rules.
How do I compare AI API pricing for my workload?
Use the same representative workload for each option rather than comparing a single rate or credit balance. A useful estimate separates the charges and billing conditions that can change the result:
- Choose the route: API, app subscription, workspace credits, or cloud marketplace access. Confirm that the allowance or balance applies to that route.
- Specify the model and version: Compare the exact model and version you expect to call, not just the provider name.
- Estimate input and output separately: Use a realistic request and response size, then apply the relevant input and output rates. Include cached-input treatment where offered.
- Check the processing mode: Batch, priority, fast, or regional processing may have different rates or conditions. OpenAI’s eligible regional-processing uplift and Anthropic’s dated standard, batch, regional, and cache scopes illustrate why the mode must be part of the comparison.
- Identify the billing mechanism: Record included usage, prepaid balance, monthly invoicing, billing-account caps, rate limits, or any automatic reload behavior that applies.
- Check account terms: Verify regional eligibility, credit expiry, refund rules, and any account-specific limits before relying on an allowance.
Then multiply the expected volume by the applicable rates and add any relevant service-specific charges. Treat the result as an estimate, not a fixed promise: real usage, model selection, cached input, output length, and processing mode can change the bill. Confirm it against the provider’s live pricing page and your billing dashboard.

Are ChatGPT credits the same as API credits?
No. OpenAI explicitly says personal ChatGPT flexible-use credits are not API credits. They apply to eligible ChatGPT features after included usage, while API pricing and billing are handled separately. Check the product and account terms for the route you will actually use rather than treating any credit balance as interchangeable.
