Compare the same product configuration at both sellers, then compare the total you would actually pay—not just the advertised price. Include shipping, delivery, taxes, required fees, and only discounts you qualify for; then weigh return terms, delivery timing, price policies, and warranty coverage.
1. Confirm both offers are for the same product
A retailer’s sale listing and a manufacturer’s direct listing are comparable only if they describe the same item and condition. Record the manufacturer and model number, then check the details that can change what you receive:
- Size, color, capacity, or other configuration
- New, refurbished, open-box, vintage, or close-out condition
- Included accessories, components, software, or bundled items
- Any model suffix or regional variant
The FTC recommends checking the manufacturer or model number and relevant product details when comparison shopping. A similar-looking item or a bundle is not necessarily the same offer. FTC online-shopping guidance

Delivered total = item price + shipping, handling, or delivery + taxes + required fees − discounts you qualify for
Keep optional add-ons separate unless you would actually buy them. If a discount requires a code, account, subscription, trade-in, or additional purchase, include it only if you meet the conditions and want the required purchase. The FTC advises shoppers to learn the total cost, including shipping, handling, delivery, taxes, and other fees. FTC online-shopping guidance

Fill in both columns from current checkout information; prices, fees, and discount eligibility can vary by seller, product, and location. A comparison-shopping site can help you find offers, but treat its results as a starting point: some sites promote manufacturers’ products or list sellers based on paid placement. Confirm the offer and terms on the seller’s own page. FTC online-shopping guidance
3. Check what you must do to get the advertised price
Read the promotion’s conditions before subtracting a discount. Check whether it requires a coupon, a particular payment method, membership, a trade-in, a bundle, or a minimum spend. Decide whether you would make any required extra purchase anyway. If not, its cost belongs in your comparison rather than being treated as a free discount.

Also check the delivery estimate and whether the listing is for the condition and configuration you matched. A lower price may not be a better deal if the product is refurbished rather than new, arrives too late, or includes less than the other offer.
4. Compare returns and seller responsibilities
Check the return deadline, how to start a return, who pays return shipping, and whether a restocking fee applies. Sale or clearance merchandise may have different terms, so do not assume the standard policy covers it. If you are buying through a marketplace, identify who handles the sale, delivery, returns, refunds, and problems: the marketplace, the third-party seller, or both. 5. Check price matching and later price drops
Policies differ by seller. Ask whether a seller will match the other offer, which products and sellers qualify, and what proof is required. If you buy and the price later drops, check whether the seller offers a post-purchase adjustment and the deadline for requesting it. Save the listing, policy, and receipt so you can document the offer and purchase terms.
6. Compare warranty and service terms
Read the written warranty before checkout. Compare what it covers, for how long, who provides service, and how to make a claim; identify whether you would contact the manufacturer or seller. The FTC says written warranties on consumer products costing more than $15 must be available before sale. FTC, Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law

7. Decide based on the differences that matter to you
Once the delivered totals are calculated, use the remaining terms to choose. If one offer costs less, consider whether its return process, delivery timing, warranty, or support is acceptable. If the totals are close, decide how much convenience or flexibility is worth to you. Neither buying from a retailer nor buying direct is always cheaper or better; it depends on the specific product and offer.
Do not use MSRP as proof that a sale price is a bargain. The FTC explains that “suggested” is the key word: a dealer can set a retail price at MSRP or choose a different price. Compare current offers for the same item instead. FTC MSRP FAQ: manufacturer-imposed requirements
