Compare a new cyberpunk game with open-world RPGs by looking past genre labels and checking what players can actually do: explore the world, shape a character, influence quests, approach combat, and access the game on their platform and edition. Treat confirmed features, reported details, and unestablished claims separately; a cyberpunk setting or first-person view alone does not make a game “the next Cyberpunk 2077.”
Start with the game’s confirmed status
Before comparing mechanics, establish whether the game is released, officially announced, or only described in reporting. Promotional language can explain a developer’s intent, but it does not establish that an advertised system works a particular way in play. For each claim, label the evidence plainly: confirmed by an official product description, reported by a named outlet, or not yet established.

For example, PC Gamer has reported No Law as an announced cyberpunk first-person open-world shooter RPG from Neon Giant. That description is a starting point, not proof of the game’s eventual quest depth, player agency, or systemic interaction. Avoid presenting aspirations as shipped features.
Compare the world and how exploration works
Ask whether the game’s cyberpunk identity is supported by its setting and presentation, then examine how the world is structured. A large map is not automatically more exploratory than a compact one: a dense city may reward navigating districts and discovering layered spaces, while a broad landscape may emphasize distance and traversal.

- Explore all of Night City’s extremes — From V’s rise as a cyberpunk mercenary in Night City to their journey into the shadowy world of spies in Dogtown, dive into the full story and carve your own path through it.
- Meet unforgettable characters — Forge relationships with a rich cast of characters all with their own dreams, tragedies, and tales to tell, including Keanu Reeves as rockerboy Johnny Silverhand and Idris Elba as secret agent Solomon Reed.
- Explore one of the most immersive cities in video games — Experience a breathtaking city of the dark future at home or on the go with the power of Nintendo Switch 2! Customize your journey from the very first steps with performance and quality mode.
- Setting: What place and social world does the game establish, and what details make it recognizably cyberpunk?
- Structure: Is exploration organized around districts, a continuous city, or multiple regions? Look for official map and traversal details rather than inferring them from “open world.”
- Activity: What does the game say players can discover or do outside the main story? Separate named activities from assumptions about how freely they can be combined.
CD PROJEKT RED describes Cyberpunk 2077 as an open-world action-adventure RPG set in Night City. Its product page highlights jobs, character and playstyle customization, reputation, and upgrades. Those specifics provide a more useful baseline than the open-world label by itself.
Test whether RPG agency is more than a label
“RPG,” “shooter RPG,” and “open-world RPG” are broad categories, not guarantees of deep role-playing. PC Gamer’s discussion of No Law cautions against treating the label alone as evidence of player agency or immersive-sim depth. Compare named systems instead:

- Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City
- Become a cyberpunk, an urban mercenary equipped with cybernetic enhancements and build your legend on the streets of Night City
- Take the riskiest job of your life and go after a prototype implant that is the key to immortality
- Builds: Can a player invest in materially different abilities or playstyles, and do those choices change how encounters are handled?
- Choices: Does the game identify decisions that alter a quest, a relationship, or a later outcome? If consequences are not described, mark them as unestablished rather than assuming branching.
- Character expression: Does customization affect appearance only, or does it also shape abilities, dialogue, or access to approaches? State only what the available description confirms.
CD PROJEKT RED framed Cyberpunk 2077 as narrative-driven and role-playing in its 2018 game introduction. For a new game, compare that kind of framing with concrete, documented choices and consequences instead of treating “RPG” as a depth score.
Compare story and quests by their structure
Look for evidence about whether the game is mission-led, open-ended, branching, or mostly linear. A story described as narrative-driven can still offer different degrees of quest freedom; the phrase alone does not tell you how much a decision changes later events.

- THE ULTIMATE CYBERPUNK 2077 EXPERIENCE - Includes the critically acclaimed spy thriller expansion Phantom Liberty
- CREATE YOUR OWN CYBERPUNK
- Explore the city of the future – you decide when you want to go where and how to get there
- Decide how the story ends – your choices in the main game as well as in the spy thriller adventure Phantom Liberty lead to a complex web of consequences
- Identify what is explicitly said about the main story and its missions.
- Check whether optional quests or activities are described, and whether the source explains how they connect to the story.
- For branching claims, look for stated examples of choices and consequences. If a source only promises meaningful decisions, do not turn that promise into a verified outcome.
Reader discussions sometimes phrase the comparison as “How are the RPG elements in Cyberpunk 2077?” One Reddit discussion raises choices, builds, branching story, and customization as points of interest, but it reflects an individual’s wording and preferences—not a survey or evidence about how all players define a deep RPG.
Compare combat by asking whether builds change tactics
Weapon lists are a weak basis for comparison. The more useful question is whether documented abilities and upgrades change how players handle encounters. Compare the available approaches, the systems that support them, and whether the source describes meaningful tactical differences.

In its 2023 Ultimate Edition announcement, CD PROJEKT RED said Update 2.0 introduced redesigned skill trees, vehicle combat, and enhanced enemy and police AI. Attribute those details to the publisher’s announcement rather than assuming every newer cyberpunk RPG has equivalent systems or that feature names alone establish their depth.

Platform and bundle details are practical differences, not measures of role-playing quality. Check the current official product page for the platforms available in your region and the exact contents of the edition you intend to buy. A release announcement may be time-sensitive, and an edition’s contents can vary by platform or change over time.

CD PROJEKT RED’s Battle.net announcement describes a 2026 release on that platform and separate purchase choices for the base game, expansion, and Ultimate Edition. Treat that as the publisher’s announcement, not a guarantee of current availability in every region; confirm present listings and contents before purchase.
The publisher describes Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition as including the base game and Phantom Liberty. Verify the current listing for the platform and region you are considering rather than assuming the bundle is identical everywhere.
Use a side-by-side scorecard without forcing a winner
When two games have enough documented information to compare, use the same questions for both. A scorecard keeps a confirmed feature distinct from a reported description or a detail that has not been established.
| Comparison axis | What to record | Evidence status |
|---|---|---|
| World and setting | Setting, world structure, exploration, and traversal | Confirmed only where an official description or clearly attributed reporting states the detail |
| RPG agency | Build options, customization, choices, and stated consequences | Do not infer agency from an RPG label; mark undocumented consequences as not established |
| Narrative and quests | Story framing, mission structure, optional content, and branching | Keep advertised framing separate from demonstrated or specifically described quest behavior |
| Combat and builds | Combat approaches and whether upgrades change tactics | Compare documented systems, not just weapon categories |
| Practical fit | Platforms, edition contents, and included expansion content | Check current official listings for the relevant region and platform |
Do not collapse the rows into one overall similarity score unless you explain what that score means. A player seeking character builds and consequential choices may care more about agency than map size; someone prioritizing exploration may weigh world structure more heavily. State the reader’s priorities and the evidence behind each comparison.
