Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Windows 11 and Windows 10 do not include a built-in Close all apps button that shuts applications while leaving your Windows session running. The safest bulk option is to sign out, restart, or shut down. If you need to keep Windows running, you can end selected processes in Resource Monitor or force-stop visible app processes with PowerShell—but save your work first.
The easiest method: sign out, restart, or shut down
This closes your open applications as Windows ends the current session. Use it when you do not need to keep the desktop and running programs open.
- Click an empty area of the desktop so that no application window is active.
- Press Alt + F4.
- In the Shut Down Windows dialog, open the drop-down list.
- Choose Shut down, Restart, or Sign out.
- Click OK.
Choosing Sign out closes the applications and returns you to the Windows sign-in screen without powering off the PC. Restart closes the apps and boots Windows again. Shut down closes the session and turns off the computer.
You can also use the standard Start-menu route in either version of Windows:

Start > Power > Shut down
Neither method is a way to close every app while continuing to use the current Windows session. Windows does not provide that one-click function.
Close visible apps while keeping Windows running with PowerShell
If you must remain at the desktop, the commonly used command below finds processes with a visible main window and forcefully terminates them.
- Save all documents and close anything that contains important unsaved work.
- Type
cmdin Windows Search. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Paste this command and press Enter:
PowerShell -Command "Get-Process |? {$_.MainWindowTitle -ne "" -and $_.Id -ne $PID -and $_.ProcessName -ne "explorer"} | Stop-Process -Force"
The command does the following:
MainWindowTitle -ne ""limits the selection to processes with a non-empty main-window title.$_.Id -ne $PIDexcludes the PowerShell process running the command.$_.ProcessName -ne "explorer"leaves Windows Explorer running.Stop-Process -Forceterminates the matching processes rather than asking them to close normally.
That last point matters. This is not a graceful “close all apps” operation. A force-stopped app may not show a save prompt or run its normal shutdown routine, so unsaved changes can be lost. Some applications may also leave tray components, services, or other child processes behind, or restart automatically.

The published procedure also excludes Registry Editor along with File Explorer. Do not remove the process exclusions casually, particularly the one protecting the PowerShell process executing the command.
Select several processes in Resource Monitor
Resource Monitor provides a graphical option when you want to close a group of processes but do not want to terminate everything matching a broad command.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
resmonand press Enter. - Open the Overview tab.
- Select the checkboxes beside the processes you want to end.
- Right-click one of the selected processes and choose End process.
This is a multi-select process-management method, not a one-click command for every open application. Check the process names carefully; ending a Windows component can make the desktop or another feature unstable.

Using taskkill for a specific app
Microsoft’s taskkill command is available in Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is most useful when one application is frozen or when you know the executable name.
For example, to force-close Notepad:
taskkill /f /im notepad.exe
To include child processes started by the selected application, add /t:
Recommended Free Tools
taskkill /f /t /im notepad.exe
The important switches are:
| Switch | Purpose |
|---|---|
/im |
Selects a process by executable image name, such as notepad.exe. |
/f |
Forcefully ends the process. |
/t |
Ends the selected process and its child processes. |
Avoid treating taskkill with wildcards as a general-purpose “close all apps” button. Microsoft documents commands such as taskkill /f /fi "PID ge 1000" /im *, which can terminate every matching process with a process ID of at least 1000, regardless of its image name. That may include background software or processes needed by Windows, not just the app windows you can see.

Why Alt + F4 is often misunderstood
Alt + F4 normally closes the active window. It does not close every open application at once while leaving Windows running. When you first click the desktop and press the shortcut, Windows instead displays the Shut Down Windows dialog, offering session-ending actions such as shutting down, restarting, or signing out.
Similarly, the PowerShell command is often described as gracefully closing all apps. It is not graceful: its final operation is Stop-Process -Force.
What to do when a process will not end
- Access denied: open Command Prompt as administrator. This can provide access to more processes, but it does not make every protected Windows process terminable.
- Another account or system process: a process owned by another user, an elevated service, or a protected Windows component may reject the request.
- The app appears to return: a tray component, service, child process, or automatic-restart feature may still be active. With
taskkill, use/twhen ending a known parent process. - Work disappeared: forceful termination can discard unsaved data because the application never received the opportunity to save normally.
If the goal is simply to clear the desktop before leaving the PC, use Sign out or Restart. If the goal is to preserve the session and close only selected programs, close them normally or use Resource Monitor. Reserve forceful commands for frozen apps or situations where you understand exactly which processes they will affect.

FAQ
Can I close all apps in Windows without signing out or restarting?
There is no built-in Windows button for that. You can select processes in Resource Monitor or force-stop visible processes with the PowerShell command, but neither option guarantees a normal, data-safe application close.
Does Alt + F4 close all open apps?
No. It closes the active window. From the desktop, it opens the Shut Down Windows dialog, where you can choose Shut down, Restart, or Sign out.
Will the PowerShell command save my documents?
No. It uses Stop-Process -Force, so applications may not receive normal close requests or display save prompts. Save all work before using it.
What is the safest way to close every open app?
Sign out, restart, or shut down. These actions close applications as Windows ends the current session. Use Start > Power > Shut down for the standard shutdown route.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Can taskkill close every process safely?
No. Broad wildcard commands can terminate system or background processes. Use taskkill with a specific executable name, and use /t only when you also want its child processes ended.
The Bottom Line
For the safe, simple option, use Alt + F4 from the desktop and choose Sign out, Restart, or Shut down. If Windows must remain running, close apps individually or select known processes in Resource Monitor. The PowerShell and taskkill approaches can clear visible or stuck apps, but they force termination and can lose unsaved work.
