These power-disconnect steps clear temporary cache without deleting game saves; Series X|S users should note that the process resets brightness and language settings. Persistent disc storage and a game’s saved data are separate from temporary cache.
Clear temporary cache on Xbox Series X|S
- Shut down the console.
- Unplug the power cord from the console.
- Leave it unplugged for two minutes.
- Reconnect the power cord and turn the console on.
Rockstar Games Customer Support recommends this power-cycle when temporary files may be corrupted and causing freezes, loading errors, or connection issues. It says saved games are not affected, but brightness and language settings reset. Rockstar’s Xbox Series X|S cache instructions
Clear persistent storage for disc-related issues
Persistent storage is a separate disc-related storage area, not the same thing as temporary system cache or a game’s save. If the Blu-ray settings menu is available on your console, use this path:
- Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
- Go to Profile & system > Settings > Devices & connections > Blu-ray > Persistent Storage > Clear persistent storage.

Clear temporary cache on Xbox One
- Shut down the console.
- Disconnect its power cable and wait at least 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the cable and turn the console on.

Xbox 360 uses model-specific instructions
Do not use the Xbox One or Series X|S procedure as a substitute for Xbox 360 steps. Xbox Support has a dedicated guide titled Clear system cache on Xbox 360, but its instructions are not available here to reproduce reliably. Follow the current Xbox 360-specific guidance for your console.

Do not confuse cache with saved game data
Clearing temporary cache or Series X|S persistent storage is different from deleting a game’s local saved data. If only one game continues to fail after a cache clear, deleting that game’s local save may be a separate troubleshooting option, but first make sure the console is online and the save has synchronized. Recovery depends on a usable cloud copy and successful synchronization.
Microsoft Flight Simulator Support describes deleting local saved data for that game, then restarting and allowing it to resync with the cloud when a local save may be corrupt. Microsoft Learn explains that deleting data on the console through the system UI does not remove the cloud copy; a game can sync that copy when launched.
