For ordinary sweat, turn the headphones off and gently wipe the earpads with a clean, dry, soft cloth. Check the instructions for your exact model before using water, detergent, alcohol, or removing the cushions: materials and cleaning rules vary. Keep liquid away from drivers, seams, ports, and other openings, and let the headphones and any removed pads dry fully before wearing them again.
Safe steps for cleaning sweat from over-ear headphones
- Turn them off and check the model instructions. Disconnect the headphones from charging or audio equipment. Look up the exact model’s care guidance before removing cushions or applying any cleaning solution. Sennheiser advises checking the individual product documentation because some removable pads may have special washing instructions. Sennheiser’s general cleaning guidance is a fallback, not a substitute for model-specific instructions.
- Wipe fresh sweat gently. Use a clean, dry, soft cloth; a lint-free microfiber cloth is suitable. Sony recommends dry, soft tools for routine earpad care, and Sennheiser advises wiping damp earpads with a clean, dry cloth. Prompt, gentle wiping helps avoid the cracking or peeling that Sony associates with long-term contact with sweat and oil. Sony’s headphone maintenance guidance explains its approach.
- Air the headphones out. Leave them in a dry place with the cushions exposed rather than putting damp headphones straight into a closed case. Sennheiser says a silica gel desiccant packet may be used in a case or pouch to absorb extra moisture; it is storage guidance, not a replacement for wiping or drying.
- For visible soil, use only a method approved for that model. If the manufacturer permits a damp cloth or mild detergent, wring the cloth out well and keep it away from mesh, drivers, seams, and openings. Never soak the assembled headphones. Some manufacturers allow a carefully dampened cloth for particular products, while others recommend dry cleaning or give special instructions for removable pads.
- Wait until everything is dry before reuse. Dry removed cushions completely before reinstalling them, and follow any longer model-specific drying time. Do not wear or store headphones while the pads are damp.
Cleaning guidance differs by manufacturer
These examples apply to the named product families; they are not interchangeable recipes. If your model’s manual gives different instructions, follow that manual.

What to avoid
- Do not apply alcohol or solvents to cushions unless the exact model’s maker explicitly permits it. Sony warns against solvents on earpads. Apple’s permission for specified disinfectant wipes on some exterior surfaces does not extend to AirPods Max cushions or the knit mesh canopy.
- Do not spray liquid directly onto the headphones or soak the assembly. Moisture can reach drivers and openings. Apple specifically says to avoid moisture in openings and not to submerge AirPods Max.
- Do not assume every removable pad can be washed. Washing is appropriate only when the instructions for that specific model say so.
- Do not pry cushions off with sharp tools or touch exposed drivers. Follow the model’s removal and replacement instructions to avoid damaging delicate parts.
When to replace the earpads
Cleaning may not resolve persistent odor or staining, and it will not repair peeling, tears, or flattened cushions. Sennheiser advises replacing soiled pads for hygiene. Check for replacement cushions that match the exact headphone model, and follow its installation instructions; fit and removal methods are not universal. Sony provides replacement instructions for the WH-1000XM5 and recommends an authorized service center if you do not want to replace those pads yourself.
