Begin with dry tools, keep liquid out of openings and charging ports, and let every part dry completely before use or charging. Manufacturer procedures differ, so do not transfer a cleaning method from one brand or model to another.
Before you clean: identify the exact earbud model
Find the model name or number in the maker’s app, device settings, product packaging, or support documentation, then open that model’s care instructions. The methods below are examples of how much guidance can vary: Apple’s specialized mesh procedure applies only to designated AirPods meshes; Samsung’s micellar-water instructions are limited to Galaxy Buds4; and Sony’s directions here apply to WF-1000XM4.
- Power the earbuds off and remove them from the charging case.
- Where the maker’s instructions allow it, remove detachable ear tips carefully before cleaning. Keep track of left and right tips.
- Use a soft, dry cloth, soft brush, or cotton swab only where the model’s instructions permit.
- Do not use pins, toothpicks, sharp tools, metal or wire brushes, compressed air, or force on mesh and openings unless the manufacturer explicitly directs otherwise.
Clean the earbuds and case using model-specific guidance
Apple AirPods
Apple’s detailed mesh procedure uses a Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit or a soft-bristled children’s toothbrush, micellar water containing PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, distilled water, two small cups, and a paper towel. It is for designated AirPods 3, 4, and 5 meshes only; do not use it on other areas or assume it applies to other AirPods. Follow Apple’s sequence: hold the mesh facing up, brush as directed with the micellar water, blot, repeat the specified passes, rinse the brush with distilled water and repeat, then leave the earbuds to dry for at least two hours. See Apple’s AirPods cleaning instructions for the exact steps and eligible areas.
For the AirPods body, Apple says to wipe with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water after contact with listed staining substances, then dry with a soft, lint-free cloth. Do not put AirPods under running water or use sharp or abrasive materials. Wait at least two hours before using or placing them in the charging case after the designated cleaning procedure.

For the case, wipe with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. If necessary, Apple permits slightly dampening the cloth with isopropyl alcohol, but keep liquid out of charging ports. To remove debris from a port, use a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush; do not put anything into the port, which could damage its metal contacts.
Samsung Galaxy Buds
Samsung’s micellar-water method applies only to Galaxy Buds4 and to the specified ports in its instructions. Use only a small amount on a brush or cloth so it is slightly damp, not dripping; never apply liquid directly. Samsung warns against alcohol, organic solvents such as acetone, other chemicals, sharp objects, and excessive force. Remove moisture and let the earbuds dry completely. Follow Samsung’s Galaxy Buds4 cleaning instructions; do not apply this method to other Galaxy Buds or electronics without their maker’s approval.

Samsung’s broader guidance for several Galaxy Buds models calls for dry cleaning: remove ear tips carefully where applicable, then use a cotton swab and dry brush, wipe mesh with a soft, dry cloth, and clean contacts and sensors with a cotton swab. It warns against liquids such as alcohol or soapy water and against metal or wire brushes. If contacts get wet, dry them thoroughly to help prevent corrosion. Sony WF-1000XM4
Sony recommends a soft, dry cloth or cotton swab for WF-1000XM4 earbuds. Do not use compressed air: it can push debris into microphone or sound outlet holes. Sony’s instructions allow a slightly damp cloth for sound outlet holes, followed by holding openings downward to drain and drying the earbuds at room temperature before putting them back in the case. Do not wash the tips in water or clean them with a wet wipe.

Clean WF-1000XM4 case contacts with a dry, soft cloth or cotton swab. The charging case is not water resistant, and moisture left on earbuds can enter it and cause malfunction or corrosion. Use Sony’s WF-1000XM4 cleaning instructions only for that model; check the matching Sony guide for other earbuds.
Clean the charging case without damaging its ports or contacts
Remove loose debris only with the dry brush, cloth, or swab specified by your manufacturer. Do not push a tool into charging ports, scrape contacts, or let liquid run into the case. Keep the case open while it dries if the maker’s instructions allow, and do not put damp earbuds back inside.

- Apple: use a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush for port debris; wipe the case with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth, using a slightly alcohol-dampened cloth only if necessary and keeping ports dry.
- Samsung: use the dry cleaning approach specified for your Buds model; keep contacts free of moisture and dry them thoroughly if they become wet.
- Sony WF-1000XM4: clean the case contacts with a dry, soft cloth or cotton swab; avoid moisture because the case is not water resistant.
Dry fully before wearing or charging
Do not charge damp earbuds or return them to a case that may contain moisture. Apple specifies at least two hours of drying after its designated AirPods cleaning procedures. Samsung says Buds4 must dry completely, and Sony directs WF-1000XM4 earbuds to dry at room temperature before they go back in the case. If any opening, contact, or case interior remains damp, wait longer rather than testing or charging it.
Choose cleaning tools cautiously
A soft brush, lint-free cloth, and cotton swabs are useful only where the specific model’s instructions permit them. Apple names a Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit as one option for its designated mesh-cleaning procedure; that is not a universal earbud kit recommendation. If you consider an earbud cleaning kit, verify that its tools and instructions are suitable for your exact model and do not follow any included liquid or scraping advice that conflicts with the manufacturer.

Manufacturers describe debris buildup as a possible cause of reduced audio or charging problems, but the reviewed care instructions do not establish a universal cleaning schedule or a quantified health, lifespan, or performance benefit. Clean when needed and follow the model-specific guidance rather than imposing a calendar routine.
