Clean the whole drainage route—not just the visible gutter channel. Remove accessible debris, check outlets and downspouts for blockages, inspect joints and fasteners, and make sure runoff discharges away from the building. Use a ladder only if you can work without leaning or stretching; hire a professional when access or repairs are unsafe.

Why clean gutters before water causes damage?

Gutters and downspouts carry roof runoff away from the building. If they clog, leak, or discharge beside the house, water can saturate nearby soil and contribute to moisture entering the building. The PNNL Building America Solution Center reports that a few inches of rain on a house roof can produce “several thousand gallons” of runoff, attributing that figure to EPA (2015). Read the PNNL guidance on roof drainage.

How often should you clean roof gutters?

The City of Portland advises cleaning gutters at least twice a year, and more often when trees are present. Treat that as a practical local baseline, not a universal schedule: how quickly debris builds up depends on the trees and other conditions around your home. Inspect the system regularly enough to catch blockages and damage before runoff overflows.

  • FOUR-POSITION HEAD: Angle the spray head up or down to obtain the perfect water direction needed for your cleaning project.
  • DURABLE CONSTRUCTION: Lightweight, non-corrosive construction ensures it will last season after season.

How to clean gutters and downspouts safely

  1. Decide whether the access is safe. Check the ladder before use and set it on a stable, level surface. Maintain three points of contact and do not lean sideways to reach. EPA’s instruction is direct: “Do not rest ladders against gutters.” If the roof is high or steep, the ladder cannot be positioned securely, or you cannot reach without overreaching, hire a professional rather than attempting roof work.
  2. Remove debris from accessible gutter sections. Clear leaves and other accumulated material by hand or with a gutter-cleaning tool such as a scoop. No cited source tests or endorses a particular tool. Work from a position that lets you keep stable footing; do not stretch to reach farther.
  3. Inspect the gutter channel and its attachments. Look for loose or missing fasteners, sagging or low spots, corrosion, damage, loose joints, and failed sealant. These problems can interfere with drainage or allow water to escape. Repairs beyond routine debris removal may require a qualified contractor.
  4. Check outlets and the full downspout path. Look for debris at gutter outlets and downspout elbows, and check that connections are secure. Make sure water can travel through the downspout and out at its discharge point.
  5. Handle a suspected interior downspout blockage mechanically. EPA advises using a snake or mechanical auger to clear a blockage in an interior downspout; do not try to flush it with water. EPA’s Moisture Control Guidance for Building Design, Construction and Maintenance.
  6. Check where the water exits. Confirm that runoff does not collect beside the foundation. If you have a disconnected surface downspout, Portland’s example guidance calls for discharge at least 2 feet from crawl spaces, porch steps, garages, or walkways, and at least 6 feet from a basement, retaining wall, or oil tank. These are Portland recommendations, not universal code distances. See Portland’s downspout discharge guidance.

What to check for while cleaning

  • Overflow or standing water: These can indicate debris, a blocked outlet, or a drainage problem.
  • Loose connections or leaks: Check seams, joints, fasteners, and sealant; note corrosion or visible damage.
  • Sagging or low spots: A gutter that no longer sits properly may not carry water as intended.
  • Water near the building: Look for runoff pooling by the foundation, water staining, or interior signs of moisture.

If water intrusion persists or the roof drainage components are damaged, have a qualified contractor assess the problem rather than treating debris removal as a complete fix.

When to hire a professional

Routine cleaning may be manageable when the gutters are safely reachable from a stable ladder and the work is limited to accessible debris removal. Hire help if safe access is doubtful, the roof is high or steep, you cannot inspect the full downspout route and discharge, a blockage is difficult to clear, or the system needs repairs. There is no source-backed price comparison here; the deciding factors are access, safety, blockage location, and repair needs.
