If your desktop does not recognize a RAM module, shut down and unplug the PC before handling it. Clean the gold contacts only if you see dirt or residue: use upright canned air for loose debris, then a barely moistened swab with high-percentage isopropyl alcohol only if residue remains. Let the DIMM dry completely, align its notch with the motherboard slot, and press evenly at both ends until the retaining clips lock.

Before you handle a RAM module

  • Disconnect power: Shut down the desktop and unplug its AC power cord before opening the case. Follow the case maker’s instructions to remove the panel.
  • Reduce static risk: Before touching components, touch unpainted grounded metal or wear a grounded antistatic wrist strap. Kingston’s desktop memory installation guidance recommends either precaution to help prevent electrostatic discharge.
  • Handle the DIMM by its edges: Hold the upper corners of the circuit board. Avoid touching the gold contacts or pressing on the memory chips.

Remove the DIMM without forcing the clips

Find the module you need to inspect. Release the slot’s retaining tabs gently; latch designs vary by motherboard. Lift the DIMM straight out by its edges. If it does not release, check how your board’s latches work rather than pulling harder. Supermicro’s model-specific installation instructions caution against excessive force on release tabs. Lenovo gives a similar warning for its server DIMMs, though that system’s procedure is not a desktop guide: Remove a DIMM.

Clean the contacts only if they need it

Routine cleaning is not required. If the contacts are visibly dirty, use this least-aggressive approach:

  1. Clear loose debris: Use canned compressed air, holding the can upright. Corsair warns that tilting the can may release liquid and damage the module. Use canned air rather than high-pressure shop air.
  2. Wipe remaining residue: If dirt remains, gently wipe the contacts with a cotton swab lightly moistened with high-percentage isopropyl alcohol. Use minimal liquid and pressure; do not saturate the swab, scrub hard, or apply liquid to the motherboard slot.
  3. Let the module dry fully: Do not reinstall it while damp. Corsair’s cleaning guidance does not specify a drying time, so wait until the contacts are completely dry rather than relying on a fixed number of minutes. See Corsair’s DRAM pin-cleaning guidance, updated April 25, 2024.

Avoid erasers and abrasive materials: they add unnecessary friction, and the cited manufacturer guidance does not recommend them. Do not soak a DIMM or spray cleaner into a memory slot.

Reseat the module in the correct slot

  1. Check the motherboard manual: Slot choice can vary by board, especially when installing two or more modules. Use the prescribed slot population rather than assuming adjacent slots are correct.
  2. Match the notch to the slot key: Orient the DIMM so its notch lines up with the raised key in the slot. If it does not align, stop and check the orientation; do not force it.
  3. Press evenly: Place the module straight over the slot and press down at both ends until the retaining clips lock into place. If the clips or slot arrangement differ from what you expect, consult the board manual.
  4. Close the case before restoring power: Reinstall the panel according to the case instructions, then reconnect the power cord and start the PC.

If the desktop still does not recognize the memory

Cleaning and reseating cannot establish whether a module is faulty, a slot is defective, or another system problem is responsible. Check that the memory is compatible with the motherboard and that the DIMMs occupy the slots specified in its manual. Kingston’s desktop and notebook memory support page provides recognition troubleshooting; if its initial checks do not resolve the issue, contact the memory vendor or system manufacturer for support.
