To clean kids’ headphones safely, turn them off, unplug them, check the exact model’s care instructions, and gently wipe only the surfaces with a cleaner and amount of moisture the manufacturer allows. Never spray liquid onto the headset or let it enter the earcup, speaker mesh, microphone, or charging port. Let the headphones dry completely at room temperature before using or charging them. There is no single cleaner or method that is safe for every model.
Check the model’s instructions before cleaning
Find the brand and model, then consult its care guide before using water, disinfectant wipes, alcohol, or removing cushions. Manufacturers’ directions differ—even for products used by children. For example, Logitech’s G435 instructions allow a lightly moistened cloth, while Ems for Kids’ audio headphone instructions say not to use water or other liquids or solvents. Follow the guidance for your own model rather than transferring a method from another brand.
Before you begin, turn off the headphones and disconnect any charging cable. Sony specifies this preparation for its WH-1000XM6 in its care instructions.
Clean the outside gently
- Remove loose dust. Use a clean, soft cloth, such as a lint-free or microfiber cloth. Wipe gently rather than pressing dirt into seams or mesh.
- Use moisture only if the model permits it. If the care guide allows a damp cloth or wipe, apply the cleaner to the cloth—not directly to the headphones—and use as little moisture as possible. Logitech recommends a clean, soft, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with tap water for the G435; it also warns against putting liquid directly on the earpads or headband.
- Keep openings dry. Avoid the speaker and microphone mesh, seams, buttons, and charging ports. Sony warns against liquid entering the headphones, and Bose advises avoiding wetting the screen over the inner headphone.
- Let them dry completely. Leave the headset at room temperature until no moisture remains. Do not connect a charger while the headphones are damp; Sony says its headphones should be completely dry before charging.
Why the safe cleaner depends on the model
Water, wipes, and alcohol are not interchangeable across headphones. These manufacturer examples illustrate why the exact product guide matters:

These directions apply to the products named, not to all children’s headphones. In particular, do not assume alcohol, disinfectant, water, or cushion removal is safe just because another manufacturer permits it. See the relevant guides from Logitech, Sony, Bose, Ems for Kids, and AVID Products.
Clean removable cushions only as directed
First check whether the manufacturer says the cushions can be removed. Some guides caution against removal, while others give instructions for cleaning detachable pads. If removal is permitted, follow the model-specific steps; do not pull at a cushion just to reach dirt underneath.

For cushions that the manufacturer allows you to clean, use only its specified method. Bose describes wiping its cushions with a damp, wrung-out cloth and letting them air-dry completely before reassembly. Logitech says its G435 earpads should not be machine-washed or tumble-dried. Avoid soaking cushions or using a dryer unless the exact product instructions explicitly allow it.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Spraying cleaner on the headset: Spray can run into openings. Put a permitted cleaner on a cloth instead; Logitech and AVID both warn against direct application.
- Wetting mesh or ports: Liquid or pushed-in debris can reach headphone components. Wipe around openings instead of across them with a wet cloth.
- Using alcohol or strong cleaners by default: Sony warns against alcohol for the WH-1000XM6, and Logitech warns against bleach, acetone, strong solvents, and abrasives for the G435. Check your own model’s instructions.
- Removing or washing pads without checking: Cushion handling differs by model; machine washing or tumble-drying can damage pads when the manufacturer prohibits it.
- Charging before the headset is dry: Wait until all cleaned surfaces are completely dry before reconnecting power.
How often should you clean them?
Clean visible dirt or sweat as needed, using the model’s approved method. Ems for Kids recommends wiping its audio headphones’ earcups, headband, and padding once every six weeks or as needed; that schedule is specific to its product, not a universal interval. For storage, Sony recommends keeping its headphones in the included case or a protective bag to help guard against dust, scratches, and impacts.
