Remove every trace of visible soil from your footwear and any gear that touched the ground, then use disinfectant on those surfaces as directed. Do this before entering and after leaving forest areas, use any cleaning stations you encounter, and follow the site’s current instructions. The aim is to avoid carrying kauri dieback pathogen in contaminated soil.
Why cleaning matters
Kauri dieback is caused by Phytophthora agathidicida (PA), a soil-borne pathogen that infects kauri and can spread when infected soil is moved. Soil can cling to boot tread, clothing and equipment, and infected trees may show no visible symptoms for a long time. MPI’s visitor guidance warns that even a pinhead of soil is enough to spread the disease; treat that as a practical warning, not a measured probability.
MPI’s guidance is to clean before entering and after leaving native forest areas in the upper North Island. Stay on tracks and keep off kauri roots. Roots can extend well beyond the visible trunk area, so do not step over barriers or leave the track to get closer to a tree.
What to clean
Clean footwear and every item that may have touched soil or the ground. Check carefully for soil lodged in seams, crevices and textured surfaces.
#1 Best Overall
- No Mounting Required: Side step plates keep it in place without bolting down
- Extra Wide: Wide design can fit large boots
- Built To Last: Heavy-duty high-density composite molded plastic sides and welded metal frame make this scraper able to withstand all weather elements without rotting or cracking
- All Weather: Other brands use wood edges that rot and crack when they get wet or are exposed to extreme heat and cold; our heavy-duty plastic edges will not
- Trusted Brand: Built tough like you by 'The Brand That Works' JobSite is run by a Michigan-based Small Business
- Walking gear: boot soles, tread lugs and recesses; hiking poles; clothing; bags and accessories.
- Mountain-biking gear: tyres, frame recesses, footwear, clothing, bags and accessories.
- Other equipment: any item that contacted the ground or may have picked up soil.
A brush is useful if it can reach the tread and the surfaces on your equipment. It removes soil; it does not disinfect gear or guarantee that disease has been prevented.
Clean in this order
- Before you go: Check current track status, closures and local hygiene notices. Pack a brush and supplies for items you cannot clean at a station. MPI’s kauri dieback information is a starting point; check the relevant land manager’s current notices as well.
- At entry and exit: Use cleaning stations you encounter and follow their instructions. Remove visible soil from footwear and gear, paying attention to boot tread, tyre tread, seams and recesses. MPI’s visitor guidance says to clean each time you enter or leave a forest area.
- After removing soil: Apply disinfectant only to the surfaces that contacted the ground, following the product label and site directions. Disinfectant is not a substitute for removing soil first.
- Keep wash-off contained: Do not rinse soil into a stream or other unmanaged water. MPI’s visitor guides say not to use water to clean gear unless it will be captured, for example in a sewer.
- If you cannot clean an item there: Put it in a plastic bag for transport rather than carrying exposed soil onward. A spare pair of shoes for the drive home can help keep forest soil out of your vehicle.
Cleaning stations and local rules
Requirements can vary by place and can change as tracks open or close. In the Waitākere and Hūnua controlled areas, MPI instructs visitors to use stations they encounter, follow posted instructions, and leave with footwear and other items free of visible soil. Check current track status and notices before travelling; do not assume an older visitor brochure captures every current local requirement. MPI’s mountain-biking brochure is dated March 2017 and describes itself as general information, not law.
