For ordinary dust, start with a clean, very soft brush and gentle dry strokes. Support fragile parts, stop once loose dust is gone, and use moisture only if the figure’s own care instructions allow it. A finish or material that is safe to brush may not be safe to wipe with water or cleaner.
What you need—and what to avoid
A clean, very soft detail brush is the simplest default for dust on open surfaces. Sideshow’s written care guidance, last updated May 20, 2025, recommends a clean microfiber cloth or soft detail brush for dust. Hobbyco’s guide, published August 24, 2026, also recommends beginning with a clean, soft brush.
- Soft brush: Use it for controlled contact on accessible surfaces and delicate details. Keep it clean so grit caught in the bristles does not scratch the finish.
- Manual air blower: This is optional for loose dust in recesses that a brush cannot comfortably reach. Use gentle airflow and keep it away from thin or fragile parts.
- Clean microfiber cloth: It may help with a surface the maker says can be wiped, but do not assume every paint, coating, or material tolerates wiping.
- Avoid as default tools: Do not reach first for canned air, alcohol, solvents, abrasive materials, or household cleaners. They can introduce risks that dry dusting avoids.
Hobbyco cautions that canned air used too close can chill a surface, release liquid propellant, or harm fragile parts. A manual blower gives you more controlled airflow without making canned air a necessary substitute for brushing.
How to dust a figure safely
- Prepare a stable workspace. Clear a flat surface and lay down a light towel or use a divided tray for small accessories, so a loose part is less likely to roll away.
- Support the figure. Hold a sturdy section rather than a thin accessory, hair strand, or articulated limb. Remove only parts designed to detach easily; do not force tight joints or disassemble the figure just to dust it.
- Brush gently from higher areas downward. Use light strokes to lift dust rather than pressing it into the surface. Support thin details as you brush around them. Stop if the brush catches on a feature or the finish appears to change.
- Use a manual blower only for loose dust in recesses. Direct gentle airflow where it can reach without putting a fragile part under strain. Do not use close-range canned air as a routine alternative.
- Inspect and stop when the dust is gone. Routine dusting does not need a wet-cleaning step. Hobbyco recommends cleaning according to visible dust and display conditions, not a fixed schedule.
- Check instructions before addressing a remaining mark. Consult the care guidance for that specific figure. If it permits spot cleaning, test a lightly dampened white cloth or cotton swab on an inconspicuous area, then dab gently without scrubbing. Do not soak the figure unless its maker explicitly says to.
- Stop if the surface reacts. If color transfers to the cloth, paint becomes tacky, or a component starts to flex, stop cleaning and ask the maker for guidance instead of trying a stronger product.
Why material and finish matter
Painted PVC and ABS
The plastic alone does not establish what is safe to use. A figure can combine factory paint, printed details, metallic coatings, and clear parts, each of which may respond differently to moisture or cleaners. Begin dry, and spot-clean only when the figure’s own instructions permit it.

Resin and polystone
These materials can be brittle. Avoid soaking them and take care not to direct strong airflow at thin sections. Use product-specific instructions where available rather than assuming advice for plastic applies.
Articulated figures
Joints and narrow gaps can trap moisture, while repeated disassembly or force on a tight joint can create unnecessary stress. Dust accessible areas without repeatedly taking the figure apart.

Fabric, flocking, rubberized surfaces, and specialty details
Do not automatically use the same wiping method you might use on a hard plastic surface. Follow the maker’s instructions for the particular material or coating.
When moisture or solvents come up
There is some variation in general care advice: Sideshow says a clean microfiber cloth or soft detail brush is suitable for dust and permits a lightly dampened microfiber cloth if necessary. Hobbyco gives a more cautious, finish-specific process. The safest shared starting point is dry dusting; before adding moisture, check whether the instructions for your figure allow it.

Avoid alcohol, paint thinner, and other solvents on painted surfaces unless the maker explicitly approves them for that figure. Kotobukiya’s ABS-parts painting guidance warns that paint thinner can penetrate ABS and cause small cracks and brittleness in the context of painting. That is a reason for caution around solvents, not routine care advice for finished collectibles. Its directions about soaking unpainted parts before painting should not be repurposed as an instruction to soak a finished figure.

Choose based on where the dust is and how delicate the details are. A brush is the straightforward starting tool; a manual blower is a secondary option, not a requirement.
