Avoid scraping or abrasive cleaners, and do not apply a water-repellent coating to the camera’s windshield area unless your vehicle’s instructions allow it. Camera-lens cleaning and post-replacement calibration are vehicle-specific, so check the owner’s manual and service guidance for your exact make, model, year, and equipment.
Clean the windshield glass without leaving residue
Use an automotive glass cleaner on the windshield and a clean microfiber cloth. Tesla owner-manual material hosted by NHTSA instructs Tesla owners to “Clean windows and mirrors using an automotive glass cleaner. Do not scrape or use any abrasive cleaning fluid on glass or mirrored surfaces.” That is Tesla guidance, not a universal specification for every automaker. Follow your vehicle’s manual if it gives different directions.
- Do not scrape the glass or use abrasive cleaning fluids.
- Pay particular attention to the windshield area through which the ADAS camera looks; dirt, streaks, or cleaner residue there can obstruct its view.
- Check the vehicle manual before cleaning any camera lens or concealed camera assembly.
Clean the camera’s windshield viewing area according to your vehicle’s instructions
Instructions differ even among manufacturers. For the interior glass in the camera’s field of view, BMW of North America’s February 14, 2025 service bulletin tells technicians to spray cleaner onto a clean, dry microfiber cloth—not directly onto the windshield. Tesla’s Model 3 service manual directs technicians to clean the inner windshield camera viewing area with a clean microfiber cloth and glass cleaner, let it dry, then check for stains or residue. These are examples of manufacturer-specific procedures, not a single method to apply to every car.
Use the owner’s manual for your exact vehicle to determine whether and how you may clean the interior glass near the camera. If the manual does not authorize driver cleaning of that area, or contamination is inside the camera area and cannot be addressed by the stated procedure, contact the manufacturer or a qualified service provider.

Do not assume the exposed camera lens can be wiped
A camera lens is not simply another patch of windshield glass. Tesla owner-manual material warns against wiping debris from an exposed camera lens. Mahindra’s manual says dirt on the inside of the windshield in front of the camera should be handled by an authorized service center. Follow the instruction for your own vehicle; do not transfer either maker’s procedure to another model.
Check before applying a windshield coating
Water-repellent and other hydrophobic treatments can affect camera visibility, depending on the vehicle and where the coating is applied. Tesla’s owner-manual guidance says to apply hydrophobic coating only to side and rear windows, not the front windshield, because it may affect Autopilot camera visibility. This is Tesla-specific advice. Before treating any windshield, check the instructions for your make, model, year, and camera system; do not assume a coating is suitable for the camera’s viewing area.

Arrange camera checks after windshield replacement or movement
Windshield replacement or camera movement can require manufacturer-specific camera procedures. Do not assume calibration is unnecessary or that one make’s process applies to another.
- Tesla’s service procedure calls for clearing calibration data when a camera has been moved from its original position, including during windshield replacement.
- Subaru Bulletin 12-192-15, dated October 26, 2015, requires inspection and adjustment of the applicable EyeSight cameras and automatic adjustment after windshield replacement. It states that the vehicle must not be returned until the listed procedures have succeeded. This instruction applies to the specified Subaru EyeSight service procedure, not every vehicle.
Before booking glass work, ask whether the provider follows the service procedure for your specific vehicle and whether that procedure requires camera calibration. After the work, ask what inspection or calibration was performed and whether completion can be documented. The applicable manufacturer service instructions—not a generic rule—determine what is required.
