Before you clean: identify the materials and check the maker’s directions
Look at the product page, care label, or brand support information and identify each upper panel: smooth or grained leather, patent leather, suede or nubuck, canvas, satin, mesh, or synthetic material. On a mixed-material sneaker, treat each panel separately and let the most delicate material set the limit for the whole shoe.
Brand directions differ. Louis Vuitton’s U.S. shoe-care guidance permits a soft damp cloth for some leather and canvas. Gucci’s U.S. guidance generally recommends a soft, dry cloth and says to avoid water, alcohol, acetone, corrosive substances, creams, and soaps. CHANEL’s U.S. instructions vary by finish, including a gentle detergent solution for patent leather while warning against heat, sunlight, and humidity.
Before using any permitted cleaner, remove loose dust gently with a clean, soft brush or cloth that will not scratch the finish or shed dye. Avoid abrasive household tools and forceful scrubbing. If the maker permits a cleaner, test it first on an inconspicuous spot; Saphir also advises spot-testing its own product.

How to clean suede and nubuck sneakers
Start dry. Brush gently in one direction to lift surface dirt and revive the nap. Louis Vuitton recommends a soft shoe brush and says a rubber brush may be used for light surface stains; CHANEL recommends dry brushing with a shoe sponge or suede cloth in the direction of the fibers.
Do not treat suede or nubuck like smooth leather. CHANEL warns that lambskin and calfskin suede are sensitive to liquids, stains, and color migration, while ETQ’s care guide advises keeping water away from suede and nubuck uppers. If gentle dry brushing does not resolve the mark, ask the maker or a specialist before applying a liquid cleaner. The available brand-specific guidance does not establish that water-repellent spray is safe or effective for every finish.

How to clean smooth, grained, or patent leather
Use only the method permitted for the particular shoe and finish. Louis Vuitton says some smooth or grained leather surface stains can be wiped with a soft damp cloth; let the leather dry fully before applying high-quality colorless cream if the shoe’s instructions allow it. CHANEL recommends a small amount of colorless polish for certain soft leathers and cautions against products that may alter the finish. Gucci’s general shoe-care advice is more restrictive, favoring a soft dry cloth and advising against water, creams, and soaps.
Patent leather directions also vary. Louis Vuitton recommends a lightly dampened soft cloth followed by a clean, dry cloth. CHANEL recommends a sponge with water and gentle detergent, followed by soft drying. Keep light-colored and dark, pigmented materials from rubbing against each other to reduce the risk of color transfer.

Do not use colored polish, solvents, alcohol, acetone, abrasive paste, or an unapproved conditioner on an expensive upper. The brands’ cautions do not mean every such product will damage every shoe; they do mean compatibility should not be assumed.
How to clean canvas, satin, mesh, and other textiles
Do not soak or machine-wash luxury sneakers. Louis Vuitton warns that washing fabric shoes this way can damage them, cause color migration, or detach the sole. Its guidance allows a brush or lightly damp cloth for cotton canvas. For satin, it recommends a very lightly damp cloth and gentle circular motions, warning that hard rubbing could remove anti-stain treatment.

For mesh, velvet, synthetic panels, or mixed textiles, follow the specific maker’s directions rather than borrowing a method for canvas. Gucci directs owners to contact the brand about canvas, velvet, and suede; its advice illustrates why a general sneaker cleaner should not be assumed compatible with a designer shoe.

Only if the shoe maker permits a treatment compatible with that shoe’s materials and finish. Saphir describes The Sneaker Cleaner as intended for several delicate materials and instructs users to apply it with a brush or technical cloth, test an inconspicuous area first, and let the shoe air-dry naturally. Those are the product maker’s directions, not independent proof that it is suitable for every luxury sneaker.

Check the shoe’s instructions before choosing a kit or cleaner. A soft brush and a clean, soft cloth can be useful optional aids, but they are not a substitute for brand guidance; use a shoe tree only for structured footwear that is suitable for one.
How to dry luxury sneakers after they get wet
- Blot, don’t scrub. Gently dab moisture with a soft, absorbent, non-pilling cloth.
- Let the shoes dry naturally. Keep them away from heaters, direct sunlight, and other direct heat. CHANEL and ETQ both advise natural drying rather than using heat.
- Follow any product-specific timing. Saphir says shoes treated with its cleaner should air-dry naturally for at least 12 hours. That duration applies to its cleaner directions; there is no established universal drying time for every shoe or cleaning method.
How to store and maintain them between wears
Put shoes away clean and dry. Storage details vary by brand: Louis Vuitton recommends felt pouches in a cool, dry place and shoe trees for structured shoes; CHANEL recommends airing shoes on a shoe tree and storing them in the original box in a dry place; Gucci recommends tissue paper, its flannel dust bag, and the original box, with nothing stacked on top.
Louis Vuitton recommends rotating shoes every two days, and CHANEL advises against wearing the same pair several days in a row. Treat these as brand recommendations, not a proven universal interval.
When to contact the brand or a specialist
Stop and seek advice if you cannot identify a finish, the stain persists, color transfers, the shoe is damaged, the sole is separating, or the care page prohibits the treatment you are considering. Gucci says care and repair for products bought from Gucci.com, Gucci stores, and authorized Gucci retailers begins with an evaluation, and a Client Advisor can advise on possible solutions. Eligibility and service terms can vary, so check the brand’s current support information. For other makers, contact the brand or an authorized repair professional before attempting a risky treatment.
