Unplug the MagSafe 3 cable from both the Mac and power adapter before cleaning. Use a slightly damp lint-free cloth only on the cable’s outer length; keep moisture away from both connectors. Clean the MagSafe 3 connector and Mac port with a dry cloth, and reconnect only when everything is dry and free of debris.
How do I clean a MagSafe 3 cable?
- Disconnect both ends of the cable from the Mac and power adapter.
- Wipe the cable length with a soft, slightly damp lint-free cloth.
- If dirt remains, wipe the cable length with a soft lint-free cloth dampened with soapy water.
- Use a dry cloth to remove excess moisture. Keep moisture away from either connector.
- Let the cable dry overnight before using it again.
These steps follow Apple’s cable-cleaning instructions. Do not use the damp-cloth steps on the electrical contacts.
Can I clean the MagSafe connector and Mac port?
Yes. Use a dry cloth, not a damp or soapy one. Apple gives this procedure in its troubleshooting guidance for a MagSafe 3 indicator that repeatedly flashes amber.
- Disconnect the cable from the Mac and power adapter, then unplug the USB-C power adapter from the wall outlet.
- Wipe the MagSafe 3 connector and Mac’s MagSafe 3 port with a dry cloth.
- Check that the connector and port are dry and free of debris. Also check the adapter’s USB-C port and the cable’s USB-C connector for debris.
- Reconnect the equipment and try charging.
Apple’s MagSafe troubleshooting instructions do not call for putting alcohol, soap, or another liquid on the connector contacts or port. Keep the magnetic port clear of debris, including metal objects, and never force the connector into place.

How should I care for the cable between cleanings?
- Keep the cable and power adapter away from liquids and damp conditions. Apple warns that liquids, oils, and lotions can damage the cable.
- Use gentle curves rather than repeatedly bending the cable at one spot; repeated bending can make it weak or brittle.
- Inspect the cable and connectors for kinks, breaks, bends, fraying, or other damage. Stop using a damaged cable.
- Apple’s MacBook Air handling guide recommends original cables or cables sold through Apple retail or its online store. That recommendation is specific to the model documentation cited here.

What if the MagSafe 3 light keeps flashing amber?
Start with Apple’s disconnect, dry-cloth cleaning, and debris-check sequence above, then reconnect and try charging. If the light continues to flash, follow the remaining troubleshooting steps on Apple’s MagSafe support page, including restarting the Mac. If the issue persists, try another charging method or cable if available, and contact Apple Support as appropriate.
