Unplug the cable at both ends, then clean its braided jacket with a soft, slightly damp lint-free cloth—unless its manufacturer gives different instructions. Keep moisture away from the USB-C connectors. Clean connector ends separately with a soft, dry lint-free cloth, and do not reconnect the cable until it is completely dry.
Clean the braided cable jacket safely
- Disconnect both ends. Unplug the cable from the device and from its power adapter or other connected equipment before cleaning. Apple’s cable-cleaning guidance says to keep moisture away from the connectors.
- Wipe the jacket gently. Use a soft, slightly damp lint-free cloth, wiping along the cable’s length. Do not soak or immerse the cable. Follow the cable maker’s care instructions if they differ. For example, the manual for one ANCO product specifies a dry cloth and warns against aggressive cleaners and immersion: ANCO product manual.
- Use soapy water only where the maker permits it. For Apple and Beats cables, Apple says that if dirt remains, wipe with a soft lint-free cloth wet with soapy water, then use a dry cloth to remove excess moisture. This is not a universal instruction for every braided cable.
- Let the cable dry before reconnecting. Keep damp cloths and moisture away from both connectors. For Apple and Beats cables, Apple advises allowing the cable to dry overnight before using it again.
Clean USB-C connector ends separately
Use a soft, dry lint-free cloth on the cable’s connector ends. Do not put liquids or cleaning products on the connectors. This connector guidance is separate from the damp-cloth method for an Apple or Beats cable jacket. Apple’s cable guidance also says not to use liquids or cleaning products on USB-C connectors.
Do not push sharp or metal objects into the connected device’s USB-C port; they can damage the connector. If there is debris inside the device port, avoid probing it with tools. Seagate’s USB-port guidance warns against sharp or metal objects.
Prevent wear and check for damage
- Make gentle curves rather than repeatedly bending the cable at the same point. Repeated bending can weaken a cable or make it brittle.
- When unplugging, grip the connector’s hard shell and pull gently; do not tug from the middle of the cable. This is handling guidance, not a cleaning method. Seagate’s guidance describes this approach.
- Inspect the cable regularly for kinks, breaks, bends, or other visible damage.
- If the cable is damaged, stop using it. Apple advises discontinuing use, and Samsung advises discarding and replacing a damaged USB cable. Apple · Samsung
Choose a replacement that fits your device
If inspection shows damage, choose a replacement cable that meets your device’s actual power and data requirements. USB-C describes the connector shape, not a guarantee that every cable supports the same capabilities. Check the device and cable specifications rather than assuming any USB-C cable will perform the same way. USB-IF’s USB charging and Power Delivery information explains that USB-C cables and charging capabilities vary.
