Check the cause before cleaning
Debris on a microphone or speaker mesh can affect sound, but it is only one possible cause. Apple also recommends checking the left/right audio balance. If you have AirPods Pro, remove the ear tip before inspecting the microphone and speaker mesh.
- Inspect the microphone and speaker mesh on both AirPods. Remove AirPods Pro ear tips first. If you see debris, use the cleaning instructions for your exact model rather than assuming one method fits all AirPods.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Balance and center the control.
These checks follow Apple’s instructions for an AirPod that sounds louder or quieter than the other. For AirPods Pro, use Apple’s model-specific cleaning guidance; do not apply the AirPods 3, 4, or 5 procedure below to Pro models.
Clean the meshes on AirPods 3, 4, or 5
Apple’s cleaning article, published August 21, 2026, describes this method for AirPods 3, AirPods 4, and AirPods 5. Apple offers the Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit as an option, or lists these supplies: micellar water containing PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides (Apple gives Bioderma and Neutrogena as examples), distilled water, a soft-bristled children’s toothbrush, two small cups, and a paper towel. The kit is optional; follow Apple’s steps for your model and the specific mesh areas it identifies.

Clean only the meshes Apple identifies
- AirPods 4 and 5: Clean only the circled meshes shown in Apple’s instructions.
- AirPods 3: Clean only the indicated snorkel mesh, control leak mesh, and top microphone.
Use the illustrations in Apple’s AirPods cleaning instructions to identify those areas before you start; do not treat every opening or part of the earbud.
Brush, blot, rinse, and dry
- Pour micellar water into one small cup and distilled water into the other.
- Hold the AirPod so the mesh faces up. Dip the toothbrush bristles in the micellar water, then brush the mesh in circles for about 15 seconds.
- Turn the AirPod over and blot the mesh against a paper towel to remove the liquid and loosened debris.
- Repeat the brush-and-blot sequence until you have completed three rounds on that mesh. Repeat for each mesh Apple identifies for your model.
- Rinse the toothbrush with distilled water. Repeat the brush-and-blot sequence on the mesh to rinse it.
- Let the AirPods dry completely for at least two hours before using them or putting them back in the case.
Cleaning safety: avoid water and unsuitable tools
Apple warns: “Don’t run your AirPods under water, and don’t use sharp objects or abrasive materials to clean your AirPods.” The mesh procedure above is model-specific; do not use it on other models or on areas Apple does not identify.

If the AirPods’ outer body has lotion, sunscreen, soap, or oil on it, Apple’s separate direction is to wipe the body with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water, dry it with a soft, lint-free cloth, and allow at least two hours to dry. Keep that body-cleaning step distinct from mesh cleaning.

When the sound is quiet but present
After cleaning and checking the balance setting, test the AirPods again. If the volume remains uneven, or an AirPod is silent, Apple advises getting service when cleaning does not resolve the issue. Coverage and any replacement fee depend on warranty status, AppleCare+, and applicable consumer law; see Apple’s AirPods service information.

When an AirPod has no sound
Apple’s guidance for a non-working AirPod recommends checking its charge before resetting:
- Make sure the charging case is charged, then place both AirPods in the case for 30 seconds.
- Open the case near your iPhone or iPad and check that each AirPod is charging.
- Test the AirPod that was not working. If it still has no sound, reset the AirPods using Apple’s instructions for your model.
- If an AirPod was recently replaced, complete setup for the replacement.
Apple’s troubleshooting instructions cover the quiet-side and no-sound checks. Follow the reset steps for your specific model rather than using a generic sequence.
