Let them dry for at least two hours after the mesh-cleaning procedures before using them or returning them to the case. If sound remains muffled, check volume balance, ear-tip fit and noise-control settings; persistent problems may need service.
Before you clean: identify your AirPods model
Apple’s cleaning instructions differ by model and generation. Check which AirPods you have before applying liquid or brushing a mesh: the permitted cleaning areas and procedures are not interchangeable. Apple’s general AirPods cleaning instructions cover AirPods 3, 4 and 5 mesh cleaning, while its AirPods Pro instructions cover Pro models. Follow the page for your exact model and clean only the areas it identifies.
Clean the speaker mesh safely
AirPods 3, AirPods 4 and AirPods 5
For the indicated mesh areas, Apple lists either the Belkin AirPods Cleaning Kit or micellar water containing PEG-6 Caprylic/Capric Glycerides, distilled water, a soft-bristled children’s toothbrush, two small cups and a paper towel. Follow Apple’s directions for the kit or the full micellar-water procedure:
- Hold the AirPod with the mesh facing upward. Brush the mesh in circles for about 15 seconds.
- Turn the AirPod over and blot it against a paper towel. Repeat the micellar-water brushing and blotting twice more on that mesh.
- Rinse the brush with distilled water, then repeat the brushing and blotting process with distilled water.
- Allow the AirPod to dry completely for at least two hours before putting it in its case or using it.
Use the procedure only on the indicated mesh areas. Apple’s instructions say not to run AirPods under water and not to use sharp objects or abrasive materials.

AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods Pro 3
Remove the ear tips before cleaning the indicated mesh areas, and avoid other areas. Apple specifies micellar water followed by distilled water for the mesh procedure; let the AirPods dry completely for at least two hours before use or returning them to the case. AirPods Pro 3 has an additional rinse procedure described by Apple; do not apply it to other models.
To clean removable Pro ear tips, pull them off, rinse them with water without soap or household cleaners, wipe them with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and wait until they are completely dry before reattaching them. Keep liquid out of charging ports.

Clean the body and charging case
If an AirPod body has been exposed to a substance that could stain or damage it, Apple’s general guidance is to wipe it with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water, then dry it with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Wait at least two hours before use or returning it to the case.
For the case, use a soft, dry, lint-free cloth; if needed, slightly dampen it with isopropyl alcohol. Keep liquid out of the charging ports. Remove port debris with a clean, dry, soft-bristled brush, and do not put anything into a charging port. See Apple’s AirPods cleaning instructions for the model-specific details.

If one AirPod is quieter or silent
For one quiet AirPod
- Remove the ear tip if your model has one, then inspect both AirPods’ speaker and microphone meshes for debris.
- If you find debris, clean only the applicable areas using the instructions for your model.
- On your iPhone or iPad, open Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Balance and make sure the slider is centered.
Apple’s troubleshooting steps for a nonworking left or right AirPod include checking the meshes and audio balance.
For one silent AirPod
- Make sure the charging case has charge. Put both AirPods in the case for 30 seconds.
- Open the case near your iPhone or iPad and check that both AirPods show as charging.
- Connect the AirPods and test the affected one.
- If it still does not work, reset the AirPods using the instructions for your model.

If AirPods Pro sound muffled or noise cancellation seems weaker
Check the ear-tip seal
A poor seal can affect sound quality and noise cancellation. For AirPods Pro 1 and 2, Apple provides the Ear Tip Fit Test; AirPods Pro 3 has the Acoustic Seal Test. Wear the AirPods, connect them to an iPhone or iPad, then open Settings > Bluetooth, tap the info button beside your AirPods and select the applicable test. Follow the prompts.
Check noise-control settings and microphones
Use current device software and AirPods firmware, make sure the external microphones are not blocked, and confirm that Active Noise Cancellation is enabled if that is the mode you want. If you do not want Adaptive Audio, check that it is not enabled. Apple notes that loss of bass or increased background sound with ANC on can be a reason to clean the AirPods.

If ANC still behaves unexpectedly, Apple advises resetting the AirPods. If the issue continues afterward, service may be needed. See Apple’s Active Noise Cancellation troubleshooting guide for details.
When cleaning is not enough
Cleaning may help when debris is affecting a mesh, but it is not a guaranteed fix for muffled sound. Apple says, “If cleaning doesn’t resolve your issue, get service for your AirPods.” Use Apple’s AirPods Support page to find service or replacement options if the problem persists or a device is damaged or missing.
