Use only minimal dry dust removal when you know the specimen can tolerate it. Don’t rinse, soak, brush, or apply cleaners to an unidentified, fragile, coated, repaired, or otherwise valuable specimen without advice from a qualified specialist.
Identify the specimen and decide whether it needs cleaning
A rock may contain several minerals, and a mineral specimen may have delicate crystals, fractures, attached matrix, or an old coating or repair. Its appearance alone does not establish that water or a cleaning product is safe. The Western Australian Museum advises: “Only undertake any treatment if the mineral type and its properties are well known. Irreparable damage may occur if inappropriate treatments are applied.” Western Australian Museum, Conservation and Care of Collections (2017).
First ask whether the material is loose dust or something more persistent. Dust that does not affect handling or display may be safer left alone than removed by a treatment that takes away matrix or damages a crystal. The National Park Service warns that specimen cleaning can cause irreversible loss; as its Museum Handbook, Part I, Appendix U (2005) puts it, “A conservator cannot undo irreversible damage.”
Choose the least risky approach for the condition
| What you know about the specimen | What to do |
|---|---|
| Known, sturdy specimen with only loose dust | A gentle dry method may be appropriate if brushing will not catch or break crystals. Museum guidance includes gentle brushing, vacuuming with a soft-brush attachment, and a photographer’s hand blower as possible dry approaches. Western Australian Museum |
| Unidentified specimen, or a rock/mineral that may be soluble | Do not rinse or soak it. Water tolerance varies; the National Park Service specifically warns against water cleaning for soluble minerals such as halite and gypsum. NPS Museum Handbook |
| Fragile crystals, projecting structures, cracks, or loose components | Avoid brushing and other contact until a specialist assesses it. Even careful cleaning can cause damage, and knocks, jostling, and abrasion can harm specimens that appear sturdy. Canadian Conservation Institute, “Caring for natural history collections” |
| Stuck-on dirt, stains, attached matrix, suspected coating, or a repair | Stop rather than trying a home treatment. The available museum guidance does not establish a general stain-removal or matrix-removal recipe that is safe for valuable specimens. |
| Valuable, rare, or uncertain specimen | Ask a natural history conservator, museum collection staff, or qualified mineral specialist for specimen-specific advice before cleaning. |
If the only problem is loose dust
For a specimen you have identified as sturdy and suitable for gentle brushing, remove only loose surface dust with a soft brush, using minimal contact and avoiding crystals or projections that could snag. A photographer’s hand blower is another dry option listed by the Western Australian Museum. These are possibilities for suitable specimens, not blanket instructions for every mineral. The Canadian Conservation Institute cautions that “Even the most careful cleaning procedures can cause damage.”

Do not assume compressed air or canned air is safe: the cited museum guidance does not establish a safe pressure or method for either. If dust is lodged between delicate crystals or does not lift easily, stop rather than increasing force.
Why water and household products are poor defaults
Water can dissolve some minerals. The National Park Service names halite and gypsum as examples and cautions against cleaning them with water. The Western Australian Museum also notes that rock samples are generally more tolerant of water-based cleaning than mineral specimens, but that does not make an unidentified rock safe to rinse.

Do not apply bleach, ammonia, other household cleaning agents, waxes, acids, oils, or coatings without specialist guidance. The National Park Service lists chlorine bleach, ammonia, other cleaning agents, and waxes among materials that may severely damage specimens. The sources do not support a universal DIY chemical method for valuable rocks or minerals.
Take extra care with pyrite
Pyrite has a specific storage risk that is not a general humidity rule for other minerals. The Canadian Conservation Institute says pyrite is particularly vulnerable to oxidation in the presence of oxygen above 50% relative humidity. Oxidation can form bulkier iron sulfate, causing powdering and eventual disintegration; acidic by-products can also harm labels and boxes. If a pyrite specimen is changing, powdering, or otherwise deteriorating, seek conservation advice rather than trying to clean it.

When to stop and ask a specialist
Pause if you cannot identify the specimen or establish whether it is fragile, soluble, coated, repaired, or assembled. The National Park Service advises consulting trained collection staff or a natural history conservator when an approved care plan is unavailable or the safe method is uncertain. That is the prudent next step for valuable specimens with anything beyond readily removable dust.
